Hello, noob medic main here. I rarely comment on guides like this since most of the time they're too "idealistic" and "unrealistic." (Meaning they always assume perfect condition like your teammates ACTIVELY protecting you, engineers always have dispenser ready and setting up sentry nest, pyro actively spychecking and killing/airblasting spies away, Etc. Etc.) Thank you for creating a very comprehensive, informative, yet still PRACTICAL and REALISTIC guide! I feel like people don't talk about the "other side" of playing medic enough, which is getting bad/and or completely clueless teammates that don't even know the basics of what they should be doing. Yes your teammates supposed to protect you. What happened when your pocket/healing target is oblivious to that one flanking scout/pyro? Engineers that doesnt even have buildings? Sniper that you overhealed to 185 but somehow loses to a razorback piss gun sniper? (Maybe cause he doesnt even know hes supposed to kill the opposing sniper FIRST?) All these things, that's just WRONG happened almost every time on daily casual play. That or the complete imbalance that is tf2 matchmaking. I love that you include both of these scenarios here, therefore making the video RELATEABLE & RELEVANT! Commenting to help your algorithm! Already subscribed waay back then. Keep up the good work!

I'm the same here but I have a little bit of more experiences, so I'mma give you some tips to help ya out, 1) If you wanna pocket a player, pay attention to their skill, if they're popping off, then it's understandable, other wise, heal everyone 2) [Optional] Prioritize on more injured team mates, but this has a few exceptions A) If you are dealing with a low HP soldier but healing a low HP Heavy, if you have the crossbow, quick switch it and land it on the soldier so they have some health to survive, otherwise you can heal the heavy up to 150 HP or higher, then quickly heal the soldier and the Heavy and rinse and repeat. B) If you see a low HP Medic, heal them immediately, Medics are top priority to both protect and kill C) If you can't see any other power classes, heal everyone the best you can, as that will help with building Uber. 3. If your gonna need a medi-gun for all situations, stock is the best answer, no upside or downside, but the other Medi-guns are often situational, Kritzkrieg if a good choice is your team is constantly getting stomped by a crowded team (Note that you and your heal target is just as vulnerable even if you pop uber), Quick-Fix is a good option if you have trouble keeping up with the damage your team is receiving (Note that snipers, spies and demoknights obviously can still wreck ya if you aren't careful), The Vaccinator is used as a wild card in my opinion, and is the most situational as it will provide you and your heal targets with the blessing of 10% damage resistances, along with 75% of resistance if you Uber, along with 2 second longer Uber duration if you uber (Note that, obviously spies and demo knights can still demolish you with ease), stock is the only one that protects you and your heal target, period. That's why it's overall the best in all situations.

@@jamesanimates7827 thanks for the tips! I now have around 120 hours on medic so I already knew this xD One thing I'd like to note is that it's hard to win with the quick-fix if you're the only medic on your team (especially so if the enemy team also has a medic) since the über doesn't have a whole lot of impact. Sure, you can regen hp really fast and take no kb, but a sniper can still shut you down.

Medic tips that I learned for those who are new to the game: 1.Distance yourself from your healing target or in tight areas because splash damage will mess you up. 2.Get accurate with the crusader's crossbow and learn the situations when to use it. Don't always rely on your medigun 3.Prioritize that one player who tries to push for your team like a heavy or demo but don't pocket them all the time. 4.Know the situation when to pop your uber or kritz. Medic is supposed to be always on high alert since your the most important on the team. 5.Always overheal your teammates. 6.Don't be afraid to fight a spy when the spy is targeting you or your healing target but don't chase them all the time 7.Help another medic. If theres already a medic in the team but if it looks like their having trouble,go help them. Preferably use quick fix for faster healing. 8.Always move so that spies won't manage to backstab you 9.Always be the one who to distract the sentry when using uber because the sentry will just focus on targetting you and that way your allies can push 10.Have fun, medic is a bit of a stressful class but its very rewarding and fun at times.

10:56 Agreed on the idea of experimenting with different situations. Most times survival is absolute priority, and there are rare fringe cases where dying to heal someone is right. But 'usually no' doesn't mean 'never yes', and there's cases where ubering the pyro so they can wipe 4 players and a sentry nest is a good trade for your life. Knowing when the fringe case has shown up takes experience, otherwise it's just suicide.

All too many times I find I'll be doing a great job and having fun, yet *Somebody* just had to pick Medic, walk up to me, stare me directly in the face, and begin healing the same target that I'm healing. It quickly devolves into an insufferable, infinite juggling game of swapping targets just so I don't heal the same person as the other guy, like he's magnetized to whoever I click on. 11:31 Also, this. If survival is a priority for a medic and the enemy has a sniper with a clear shot at you, playing 'zig zag to throw off the sniper' is a dangerous game. It can feel bad to play chicken when the team is dying, but if the soldier you're healing is constantly crossing the sniper's sight line and keeping up with them is suicide, you really have to carefully judge how valuable it really is to expose yourself, 30 seconds left or not.

A good medic can be pretty disgustingly powerful. In the "Positioning" clip from 12:15 onwards, just look how many players are in bad positions yet lived because they had just a little overheal or a crossbow shot barely kept them going. What should be 4 teammates dead is 4 enemies overextending and dying because they thought he was 1 hit from death, but oops, he got crossbowed so now it's a real fight. As someone who plays medic in just about any game that has them, it's always such an underrated class because they don't pack the DPS. In Battlefield 4, there were games where I got the most score purely from healing + revives on Operation Metro, with literally several hundred revives per game. And yet some goon with an AEK would always think he carried the team because he had 70 kills. Same with overwatch back when that first came out, learned all the movement tech for Mercy to optimize mass healing, when Ana came out trained aim so I could hit any teammate anywhere. Just never really got into tf2 the same. But the depth of medic gameplay is enticing.

Now THIS is a medic guide. Lots of info, straight to the point, and some funnies to boot. Something I would add is to consider how many Soldiers are using banners in casual; especially the Concheror. Considering these buffs range from mild to "oh sh-" levels of effects, I would have thought you would have added something to bring up the nuances of said banners. Hearing a bugle from the enemy Soldier would be a warning to get back quickly as mini-crits are on the way. Hearing the Concheror's distinct toot would warn you that a bomb is either imminent or he's low on health and asking for "heals" from your crossbow. Of course, you would want to hold your kritz charge if you hear the Battalions Backup being used (B4nny knows the pain of asking for the kritz and seeing it get stuffed by said Backup. Then again, if your team's soldier(s) uses said banners... you could rail enemy light classes with a mini-crit crossbow from relative safety, completely disrespect Snipers while under the protection of the backup (one of my favorite things about the backup - complete Sniper denial), or reposition with the Concheror's speed boost. Then again, with so MANY different weapons that can greatly differentiate playstyles (Demoknights, Huntsmans, Gunslingers, etc.), perhaps an second part is in order? Now we need to get you to Uncle Dane levels...

Everyone can also help medics in their own way. 1. Scout Your job is to escort them back after death, and to rotate back for health and to check in if they need protection. Equip the boston basher for über bonus during downtime, and the madmilk for spychecking. 2. Solider After rocket rollout, be sure to remember the medic can heal that splash when they get there, and remember your mobility can be used to return to the medic too, letting you defend them if needed, and heal up before going back. Also you make a great general über. 3. Pyro Unless you be floggin, you need to remember that deflecting a crocket from a medic can be worth running out of ammo and even dying. And allways spycheck when passing the medic, you are the born anti-spy, and medics are the ultimate spy-magnet. if you be flogging, let stock medick know when you get close to climax, that crit and invuln combo makes critz happy medics not feel like picking stock is a chore for 8 seconds. 4. Demoman You were born to be übered, but try to earn it. You can attack out of sight enemies, do self-damage for über, and can pepper a friendly medic with pellets ot stickies if they in trouble, as well as sticky jump to them for aid and heals. And if you're a knight, be sure to valiently come to the rescue of any medic being flanked with that shield dash, and let fury rain upon those who dare harm the fair maide- I mean medic. 5. Heavy You have the health to block damage, the damage to controll area, and the power to heal the healer. It may be less common to get übered by skilled medics then those who just saw meet the medic, but that doesn't mean you're not still bff's. You peak the corners for them, you scare the bad man away, and you share your bread when the food is scarce, just like in gulag. If you run shotgun, you can popp a spy fast, so still useful for the medic friend. 6. Engineer When the medic falls back, which they do more than most, they need you to fall back to. A well placed sentry lets the medic share your boubble of toxic influence (I know you watch uncle dane, c'mon) giving them aid when in need, and giving you kills for that frontair justice. The medic is the only one who doesn't get medic heals, which is why your dispenser needs to be as brave as the medic (unless the medic is either an idiot or a coward), and finally the teleporter can cut down enemy über advantage after someone gets the med pick so keep it as safe as you want your respawned medic to be. If your nest gives the medic space and safety, you will be frequently overhealed and may get to move that gear up rather than having to waste metal rebuilding. 7. Medic Heal the healer, healer! and be a healer healer! If the other guy goes anything but stock, probably pick stock, and remember only one of you needs to make the risky play, as having one backliner with safer but slower über building is a lot more useful then letting that lucky spy get a double medic stab. Also remember anything useful to know as a medic, is useful to share with the other medic, like if you're backstabbed or one player proves to be highly über worthy, just make sure not to put people down in chat, focus on who is doing great to keep up morale. 8. Sniper Your medic is the best magnet for overextending heads to click, so know where they are, and make sure any sightlines between them and the enemy get extra attention. Jarate also works great near a medic for spychecking, and to make the medics self-defence melee more potent. 9. Spy Oh don't think you get a pass, as a spy you can take out those who are distracted trying to get a medpick, since a lot of people are willing to die for it and don't watch their back. And if you want extra points, equip the dead ringer, and disguise as your teams medic; the enemy will chase you into anywhere, and won't expect the medpick to cause any back injuries, not to mention that you can decoy the medic during battles to split enemy fire in a pinch. Getting shot just as the real medic popps über on a pyro behind the person taunting what they thought was a medpick, as you type "wrong medic honey" in chat, is gonna feel better than getting a chainstab after zapping a whole nest.

As a pyro, going around corners taking a peek at sentries that depending on the position or whether it is distracted to make a play helps when the sentry is unnocupied and in a un engagable spot same goes for heavies. The surfing tips really help even though the class cant do it as effectively sometimes.

34:45 one of the things I commonly do as pyro when the med is surronded with allies, is comboing only him with the axetinguisher and the use the speed boost to run away, even if he is behind everyone. Trying to combo anyone around the medic is risky, as it's always a gamble to know how much health they have, and if boosted (which I usually strugle to see even if there are particles) they will survivie the axe, in which case I dont get my speed boost to get away and die. However, because the med can't overheal himself, he suddenly becomes the safest pick to get the hell out of there after doing a kill.

That clip at 2:24 is absolute gold! Thank you for the in-depth guide, and I really appreciate you making a guide that is respectful of the realities of casual/casual teammates rather than assuming perfection. I also have a question-- at several points in the video, you mention coordinating with your team over mic. If I don't have a mic, what can I do? I have chat binds for "Uber ready" and "Uber popped". Is there anything else you recommend doing? Thanks!

Remember when going into a 1v1 fight don't forget to use your crossbow your crossbow is probably your most consistent weapon in terms of 1v1s as a medic and of course if they get too close use your uber saw but do not challenge spies with a uber saw unless you know that there not good at spy then take the risk but if you know its a good or at least competent spy just run and shoot them with your crossbow until you find a teammate if you're doing good it shouldn't be to hard to find a teammate Also remember not to be a selfless jesus you can't save everyone and if you see a enemy push that you can't beat don't stay there and die with your teammates and don't run into the front line knowing you can die Honestly I've seen many medics that run into danger trying to save one dum heavy or soldier Also if you see another medic fucking overheal them that medic will help keep other teammates alive which will help keep you alive as there more teammates to protect you and when you are in near death that medic will save you and you will save them if your team is low and your 2nd medic is nearly dead promise the medic is usually the best option because again more medics alive will heal and save more teammates Another tip is don't stay at the back of your team I know it sounds stupid but if you're in the back a spy will eventually kill you as your in the very back but that doesn't mean staying in front instead try stay in the middle not only is it easier to heal teammates on both back and front but you are also completely surrounded by teammates If you are forced into a 1v1 against a scout and you know there no teammates nearby I recommend fighting them instead of running if your alone the scout is just gonna pick you off your more likely fighting them now that doesn't mean you just run in and hope to kill no instead I recommend bait the scouts around the corner to shoot them with a crossbow bolt jf your in a cramped corridor you could use the uber saw of course this strat will not always work against scouts but I've found this the best strat for facing off scouts you should also try fight them head on with your crossbow to throw hem off guard but only do this if you can dodge bullets and hit consistent shots it is a more risky strat but if your alone against a scout what do u have to lose? Aftersll either you run and die or you could try fight and even if you do die you could potentially weaken the scout which could provide a slight advantage

2:50 True the only time a medic can undo bad positioning is a clean ubersaw crit it isn't a mechanic but with how often and iconic it is and happens it might as well be.

Honestly, you do have a good point about the Solemn Vow to scan the enemy Medic's Übercharge in case if your friendly Spy isn't telling you what their percentage is, but I don't think it's a good idea for Medic to get aggressive just to scan the enemy's Übercharge which could put you in danger, even if the weapon doesn't have to be active for it's effect. And if anything, stock Medigun is considered the most consistent of all Mediguns.

I had a match at Steel were my team (BLU) get stomped many times by a kritz medic soldier-demo trio and my teammates were unable to cap a single point and were pushed by the little time left, so I switch to medic with vacc to counter attack them, little by little were gaining soil, unfortunately we lose but God the experience I gain with that weapon was awesome, it's a shame my teammates were so uncoordinated so they crush us easily when defending and their medic switched to vacc.

Medic and engie have the unique commmonality that their primary purpose doesn't involve direct damage, and good players of either class knows to watch one another. After all, medics need safety but can make space, engies need space to hold and can make it safe. Even though there is less direct interaction, medic and engie should lock in with one another like the drummer and bassist of a band, making the foundation everyone else builds on. Oh, and pyro's and scouts should protect them (yes i said scouts, they can escort and protect medics while helping über build with basher, and should rotate back to dispensers if kinda close when in need of a heal and spycheck with milk if part of a push or choke, saving packs for allies).
