49% of physicians report being burnt out, but which specialty has it the worst?
With 63% reporting burnout, is emergency medicine. EM doctors work on the front lines, which means consistent high intensity, stress, unpredictability, and difficult patients.
At number two is OB/GYN. It’s common to be on call for emergencies, making it an unpredictable specialty. Plus, while delivering babies is rewarding, it’s also stressful and messy.
At number three is oncology. Oncologists are faced with cancer on a daily basis, which means they’re also faced with death and delivering devastating news to patients and their families.
In the number four spot is pediatrics. Pediatricians require extreme patience and empathy to work with both children and their parents. Seeing patients suffer and losing patients is always tough, but it’s especially difficult to lose children.
At number five is family medicine. These physicians are required to stay up-to-date with many different areas of medicine. There’s also a great deal of computer work and charting involved.
