Giving my cat a pill was always stressful for all of us (it was always a 2 people job) and now she's on antibiotics again. After watching this video I put her pill on a kitchen cloth and put a little bit of delicious meat paste on it. She ate it all with the pill and asked for more paste. I have 20+ cats rescued from the streets who have now become permanent residents in my home. Every cat is different when it comes to medicating. Ingrid has some excellent methods here and this is a really helpful video. In my case, however, most of my cats, for some reason, dislike the texture of pate type foods incl A/D , and do not like treats like Ciao or even butter. Hence if the cat has a few tablets + liquid to take, my best way is to mix one type into her canned food which has more juice, and give a small amount of food at a time, so she doesnt feel full enough. Then at each interval, a different med is given. This is the best way I can manage so my cat doesn't associate me with meds time. I admit I may not get all the meds delivered into her system this way, but it's the lesser of two evils. Hope this helps 💖

i think it has something to do with the cat's tongue, it has all these tiny backwards spikes on it. when it rubs against the surface of the towel it catches the pill and goes inside their mouth. when it hits the back of the cat's tongue it is hard for them to spit it out due to the backward spikes so they might as well just swallow it. think that's the science 😀

I watched your video and several others for ideas. Your approach was unique and your calm "can do" attitude gave me hope. My cat can be extremely feisty and i didn't think giving her a pill (a bitter tasting one too!) on a towel with wet food was ever going to work, but it did!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! You're technique of placing the pill on a textured surface worked beautifully. Getting our little guy to take his meds has been a traumatic process. I put his antibiotic in a gob of Churro paste on a course mat, just before his regular meal and he gobbled it down. I did not expect this to work at all, but thought I'd start with the easiest method. My day, and Mr. Cat's day, is so much better because of you.

Angela Warner I guess I missed an important piece of information in my original comment - 😄 We don’t put the soft treat over crushed pills directly. We always crush the pills and place them in capsules in the smallest size (you can order them from amazon, they are size 4), then squeeze soft treats over the capsules for our cat to take. He can smell the bitterness of the pills so he absolutely won’t take them if they aren’t in capsules!

I can't thank you enough for this advice. My 14 year-old cat, Ounce, has recently been diagnosed with an over-active thyroid and needs to take liquid meds every 12 hours through a syringe which he just wasn't having but will need to be administered for the rest of his life. I spent some time on the internet looking for hints and tips. I knew that the 'wrapping the cat in a towel' trick possibly would work but only under duress for both of us. Then I saw the magic you videoed with your cats happily taking their meds with the help of Hill's A/D and various syringes. I immediately drove to my vet in Deal, Kent, UK who provided me with said syringes and two cans of Royal Canin Feline and Canine Recovery Food which is a similar smooth pate consistency. It's worked beautifully to the extent that my Ounce cat is taking his meds with pleasure and no man-handling necessary.

I take back every sarcastic thought I had when I first watched this. Oscar, the Cat of Love, is as sweet, affectionate and good-natured cat as has ever lived, but he turns into a twisting, flailing, claw-wielding wild animal when I try to give him a pill (which is every other day for the rest of his life). Despite rolling him in a heavy jacket (which neither of us enjoy), I only manage to get it into him about half the time, and end up bloodied most of the time; no matter who wins, we are both traumatized by the time we're done. I give him a wet nutrition supplement as a treat so after losing another round of "Betraying Oscar's Trust", I covered the capsule with some and embedded it in a small pile of the same and watched in disbelief as he ate the capsule all by himself! I'm cautiously optimistic that this might be the answer to our dilemma. Thank you so much for posting this!

@@berttini I used the wet food we were feeding them. I think it was Beyond or maybe Wellness.

Omg. I know this video is hella old. But I just found it because I’m trying to figure out how to medicate my cats without traumatizing all of us when I move across the country. And last time I had to medicate them…..it was not good. I’ve been trying the last couple of days to get my cats to take the medicine mixed in a bit of food, and they are not having it. But the parfait method is GOLD. I gave them some of the food in a syringe and they are loving it!! I’m going to do this everyday to get them used to the food in a syringe then sneak the meds in there. I am elated right now. Thank you so much for this! Also I love all your cats. 🥰🥰

Thank you for this video. It is interesting and a creative way to give cats medication. However, my cat, Brooklyn, is super smart and knows when I am about to administer Atopica (a very, very bitter and nasty antibiotic liquid medication). I give her treats AFTER I administer the medication. These treats help eliminate the nasty bitter taste of Atopic from her tongue/mouth. TIP: When giving your cat a LIQUID medication make sure you are at the very back of your cats mouth (where the whiskers are located). You can stick the syringe into the corner (far back pocket of mouth) of your cat's mouth. DO NOT tilt your cat's head back because the medicine could go into the nose or lung areas which is not safe.

absolutely. You can also syringe in a little at a time. However, pain meds CAN be absorbed by the tongue and gums so it's not necessary to be sure it's at the back of the throat.

So far so good with my cat, his fluoxetine and this method! It's been an absolute nightmare trying to give this to him the past few months but this method is like a nice little bonding sesh! I've been using 'Inaba Churu' liquid pet treats for anyone who doesn't have a prescription to Hills and my cat goes nuts for them. Towel down, tastes the liquid treat, then squirt on top of a hard treat, another hard treat, pill, and followed by more hard treats, all very quickly. We'll see how long until he figures it out lol but going to try the parfait as well.

Thanks for the tip about INABA Churu Cat Treats! I’m gonna try it🙏🏻

❤😀🙏🏻Forever grateful to you for the Inaba Churu heads up! It worked like a charm! Easy to dispense straight from the tube bag! Nice & sticky so it clinged to the top of the pill. Small serving tube bag to pill only one cat. Grain-free (chicken) so consistent w/her diet.

Thank you very much Ma'am. This video was amazing we are seniors and have two rescues. One was extremely abused before we got him and we figure his abuser was a woman as he is terrified of them but after some trust building climbs all over me. We need to apply Gavapentin to him transdermally in the ear and your tips will really help. he is so terrified of things the vet suggested this to sedate him prior to bring him into the clinic. Thank you again for your advice and for caring for these little creatures.

You shouldnt spike the treats with crushed meds, eG pantoprazol tastes bitter when ground down

Same here. They are so bitter. I am going to just keep them in that gel cap. I wish I hadn’t done it. My cat turns his nose up at his treat too.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear your babies are turning away from their treats! That's awful! I stopped refilling Shane's treats with meds and started using transdermal but that's wrecked his ears (fur loss, thinning skin). He's crashing right now, so we're tapering him off the prednisolone altogether and giving other meds that I'm having a very difficult time giving him (for a roaring infection, exactly what is unknown at the moment). Will have to try giving it to him on a towel. Thing is, he's not eating much of anything at the moment, so getting him to eat ANYTHING on his own right now will also be difficult. I so wish I'd seen this video again sooner. Totally forgot about it. He just ate some regular food, the first all day. Dread pilling in the morning.

God no kidding. If cats even slightly detect something foreign in their food, they will walk away. The cats in this video are unusual the way they would down their meds effortlessly

This video has changed my life! 4 of my 5 cats took their pills with food immediately! It was magical. Cat #5 is very new to me (adopted her 5 days ago) and she's just started accepting wet food. Once she's comfortable I'll start practice-medicating her too.
