I'm a pharmacy tech and while I moved to a work from home job and havent been in a pharmacy since the mid pandemic, we were very regularly unable to stock a large variety of normally very common medications. Many others were on extreme backorders where we maaaaaay get a few bottles in freight once in a blue moon, and they'd be dispensed and out in hours. I remember having to go on an extreme wild goose chase to track down a very basic medication used in transplant recipients so their body doesn't reject their donor organ... it took cold calling 10+ local pharmacies to find one that had the drug in stock. This is increasingly becoming the norm across the board.

This may be a calculated self-imposed supply shortage by pharmaceutical companies in order to drive up the price

Exactly. In Amsterdam nobody goes to pharmacy anymore, everyone uses either mushrooms, or healing roots or cactus. 😊 So they are trying to distract people away from the truth 😅

This is simply self-imposed by ridiculous levels of bureaucracy necessary in order to change anything about manufacturing process, including sources of input chemicals. With global supply chains being out of whack, this is the only logical outcome when approval takes 6-24 months for just a change in source of same chemical

The fact that this is news is absolutely shocking to my core. There have been many different drugs that I use that been short or way behind over the last two years I never knew that it was a global phenomenon. US based.

Well, here in Czechia, it's a yearly event, kind of like tornadoes in tornado alley. There are two reasons for this really. 1) environmentalism forced out companies producing active ingredients for the drugs, because their production is rather messy affair. 2) we didn't require two or more production centers of the active ingredients.

The US is exactly the same. I've been on a certain medication for YEARS and I haven't been able to get it in stock for 6 months! The pharmacist said it is because the medications are not profitable for the companies to make so they would rather make the meds that pay more. That figures!

Not only medicines. It is happening with many medical products. Competition has forced the closure of small local companies and population decline prevents them restarting when supply systems suffer a failure.

6:55 The generic drugs production is the example of how in free market, even the monopoly dare not act monopolistic. The winner a.k.a. monopolist still has to keep their prices down for fear that competitors become interested to produce the drug. It is only in government supported monopoly that a monopoly becomes problem, because they won't have to fear competition, government already took care of those pesky competitors.

Novo Nordisk is so valuable mainly cos of one drug that helps people lose weight. That's not what people grappling with actual health issues need. Even the people who need that drug for health reasons are struggling to get it, cos of the massive demand for it by the people who just want it to lose weight.

3:54 The medicines manufactured primarily in Europe are to treat old age diseases. Since, the average age in Asia is far lower, there is insufficient domestic demand for mass production. When Asia, also faces aging population problem, the market share will shift.

The largest generic drug manufacturer, Teva, is Asian, but neither Indian nor Chinese. Teva has several factories in Europe, and obviously in Israel which is geographically close. Together with Sandoz and a couple of small generic producers, Europe should be able to cover its needs for generics without any subsidies.

We need to streamline our pharmaceutical regulatory regime to reduce lead times and costs. Using more automation would help by reducing labor costs and allowing less human error. There also needs to be tax incentives to make domestic drug manufacture more attractive to investors. And Medicare and Medicaid programs could generate a lot more demand by requiring American manufactured drugs where practical.

If first world countries even can compete with the third world for manufacturing, it is going to require relaxing regulations and other costly competitive benefits, which politicians are likely to balk at and the public may also find distasteful. Western societies sacrificed most of the redundancies in supply chains for decades to save money on labor, warehousing, and to take advantage of growing efficiency in shipping networks, and you can't undo all that overnight.

You didn't. These are mostly their own companies. They beat you at your own game, partly cos you didn't even want to do what they did. The west has pharma companies - they exclusively chase high value drugs still under patent. China and India make the generic drugs, which btw have saved millions the world over thanks to being cheap. Your companies don't even WANT to make generics. There's just a lot less money in them.

We in Europe have to start producing raw materials for medicines again. We should also make our own medicines again, even if it costs more. The dependence on China and Otherwise India will break our necks again and again. The environment also suffers when medicines are manufactured in countries such as China and India.

? this is the result of a unregulated market. They competed and destroyed competition until only one or two were left. Then they stayed down with the price to keep other out of the marked. Now they had no money to modernize and meet safety standards resulting in lost, failed or contaminated production. There needs to be standards and laws to prevent monopolies and guarantee quality products.

I've worked in hospital pharmacies for 20 years. Drug shortages are really nothing new and something that we have had to manage long before I even started. The reasons for drug shortages are varied and complex. If anything, we tend to have it better over here because we pay more for medications, but things like industry consolidation, plants shutting down due to consolidation, recalls, supply chain issues, COVID making things worse, and even things like drug companies ceasing shipments into the US because they didn't want their drugs used in lethal executions, all contribute to an overall reduced supply. Some things in the video cited are not accurate to the US (the first company to create a genetic drug when the original patent expires actually gets a 6 month monopoly to allow them to recoup costs, was one that stood out), but overall, the content is mostly accurate. The only reason I could think of why they created this video was because of Josh's personal experience.
