Either you, a family member or friend are likely taking beta-blockers. These are one of the most versatile medications in medicine. In this video I cover everything you should know about taking Beta blockers, including how they work, who should and shouldn't take them, and side effects. There are many Beta blocker drugs. Generics drugs include Metoprolol, Atenolol, Propranolol, Bisoprolol and Nadolol. You may know these beta blockers by their pharmaceutical tradename; Lopressor, Toprol, Zebeta, Tenormin, Corgard and Inderal. I have many patients on beta blockers, and I'll show you how many of them take ECG and monitor their heart rates on their smart watches and phones.

I have been taking beta blockers for my entire adult life (48 years), and I am quite convinced that if it were not for this medication, I would not be around today. I am 68 now, BP is normal to (sometimes) high normal. I take 5mg of Bilocor (Biprosolol) daily. My pulse is around 55-60.

That list of medications is critical because sometimes meds get prescribed which can cause serious negative interactions. Having the list allows other medical professionals the opportunity to catch this. Great job on today's video doctor. 👍

I’ve been on metoprolol for many years and I feel that it has ruined my digestive track. It also causes me to have heart palpitations and headaches. I’ve asked my doctor many times to ween me off of the beta blocker. She always puts that in my patient notes, then mentions that I must control my weight, which is impossible for me on the beta blocker. 🙁 Thank you for the informative videos Dr Moran.

I’m sorry that your mother is going through this. I’m also fatigued since starting a beta blocker last year. Also, I’ve been having brain fog & short-term memory issues and my cardiologist suggested it may be the beta blocker and told me to stop for a week and see if that improves. I looked into it and found that it cannot be stopped abruptly, so I’m taking full dose/half dose on alternating days to see if it helps my brain fog. I use a pill cutter to cut it at the score line.

@@T.J.Caldwell318 Thank you for your reply and I’m sorry for what it’s doing to you. I don’t feel as well as I used to and that’s why I’m working to get off this med and another one. I’ve been on metoprolol for a year now but I never knew it suppressed adrenaline until watching this video now. My concern is that I’m on low dose prednisone daily (7.5mg) that suppresses the adrenal glands. I have so many questions but my doctors are not willing to answer them, and they become angry as if I don’t have a right to ask. I’m on these meds without proper Informed Consent.

Thank you so much this is very helpful. I'm taking the lowest dose of Bisoprolol. I have been given this for long covid heart palpitations with possible arrhythmia disorder to be diagnose with an ep study. Can you tell me if I take this in the morning could it possibly contribute to my insomnia. I can generally seem to go to sleep but after a few hours sleep I'm wide awake. At the moment I'm lucky if I get 3 or 4 hours sleep. This sleep deprivation is badly affecting me. Does anyone know about this? Grateful for your helpful video.

Hey doc, I’ve just been put on propranolol almost 2 months ago. Just two or three weeks ago I started having pain in lower left abdominal with sulphuric smelling gas. I’m guessing ibs or diverticulitis? Stool is normal. I’ve never had stomach problems before and I eat consciously. Should I quit taking (taper off)? Pain and gas persists.

Oh my. I have peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease. My cardiologist put me on a very low dose 12.5mg. of Metoprolol due to it's protective effect on the kidneys and my history of CKD which has resolved anyway. I take Amlodipine and Lisinopril too. I'll need to ask about that, wonder if they even realize I have PVD too...one less pill would be nice anyway. Thank you for the info Doctor Moran.

Thank you for commenting, Maria.Beta blockers are good for different types of "palpitations" which I was referring to when I talked about heart rhythm problems. They can help with anxiety although we have better medications for anxiety. Beta blockers in some people slow the heart rate down too much which can lead to anxiety. I am glad they have been helpful for you. Best regards to you Maria.

I was only on 1.25 mg of Bisprolol just one time daily and now I am taking 2.5 mg of Ivabradine once a day, recommended switch by my cardiologist. I am currently while typing this going through hell even with this 1.25 mg Bisprolol low kind of dosage. I am so nervous and anxious. And I wonder if I am at risk? Does anybody know if this is dangerous for me? I was only on 1.25 mg of Bisprolol once daily for one week, but it feels unbearable to come off it, even just after only taking this little amount for one week. Anyone similar experience, advice or recommendations?
