FUN TRICK: If a BB starts with A-M = Selective. If a BB starts with N-Z = Non-Selective (B1+B2). The only exceptions to this rule are Carvedilol and Labetalol (B1+B2+A1 non-selective), and Nebivolol and Betaxalol (NO release vasodilation for Nebiv, and CCB-like response for Betax). You now know effectively every BB receptor!

Good presentation. Sir you have mentioned, in heart failure only 3 medicines ie, carvedilol bisoprolol metoprolol. So why nebivolol cannot be used bcz it could better replace carvedilol as the later even block beta2 receptor also. While the nebivolol do same as carvedilol without blocking b2 and since no lung issues

Hi, is it true that discontinuing Propranolol can result in abrupt heart attacks even at low doses like 40 mg ?
@DrugChug
@DrugChug 4 жыл бұрын
Hi!😁 The risk will always be there when abruptly stopping any beta blocker. The risk is decreased if it's a lower dose, and a less duration of use (using it for 1 week versus 3 months). It never hurts to slowly taper beta blockers off!

Sir I take Inderal for anxiety disorder, my doctor has advised me to stop this medicine gradually like 10mg twice a day for a week and then 10mg once a day for a week before stopping it. My question is that if I only take 10mg Inderal once a day whenever I needed can I stop it suddenly, and pls suggest which beta blocker will be suitable for my anxiety?
@DrugChug
@DrugChug 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Ashu, yes you should slow down taking the inderal just like you said. If you decide to take it at times of need, it would be okay to take it once in a while without needing to lower the dose. However, if you are using it only for anxiety, you must take it 1 hour before an event where you may get anxiety. If you need a medication for anxiety, maybe talk to your doctor for an anxiety medicine. Because Inderal is usually only for blood pressure. Hope this helps!

@@DrugChug Sir, I'm grateful to you for your above advice and correct information. I understand that propranolol is basically used to lower the Blood pressure but its action of blocking beta receptors in the heart reduces the symptoms of anxiety. Which is great in dealing some social phobias like public speaking or an interview. I visited a psychiatrist (DM) and he suggested me to take SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) this helps in maintaining the proper level of serotonin in the brain and it cures my anxiety in the correct way.

Can carvedilol 12.5mg give to elderly patients? Does carvedilol slow down the heart function n the dilation of blood vessel to cause lesser blood to kidney n causing trouble to the kidney as kidney receiving less oxygen? How long can this medicine given to elderly patient? As the lung receptors are blocked n causing less function to exchange oxygen, could this result the blood cell in the body and organ deteriorate because of less oxygen and nutrients reqiired? Also, since carvedilol put a brake on the heart function, could this eventually worsening the heart n causimg death to elderly? This video is great, excellent explanation. One more question, since carvedilol is an old medicine, does it still widely used?

Great question! You have to understand that the non-selective are older drugs. This means some insurance companies want to pay for them first, because they are cheaper. So unfortunately money is a big factor in therapy. Also, some of the nonselective have benefits, for example: propranolol can be used for hyperthyroidism and social anxiety. Hope that clears some things up!

Your blood pressure is considered Stage 2 ( > 140 ) which typically means patients are on 2 medications. A beta blocker like metoprolol would decrease the blood pressure, but making sure you have a healthy diet is also part of the fix. Less sodium in your daily diet and healthier foods will bring it down. Contact your primary doctor and have this discussion with them, hope this clears some things up!

That would depends on your age and the reason your blood pressure is high. Do you have any chest pain or difficult breathing? Is your heart rate way over 100? If yes, then you do need to talk with your doctor to find the right medication to reduce that. Metoprolol works best for that. However, if you don't have any chest pain or any symptoms at all, then you probably don't need medications. Sometimes there's a good reason for blood pressure to go up when we are physically active or running alot or working hard, so you don't want to lower that because if you do and your blood pressure not high enough, you can get dizzy or fall and that's the side effect of blood pressure medications.
@harrisengr

Don't mean to preach because I have high blood pressure. I have typical systolic high blood pressure that happens after age 65. Sometimes jumps up to 145 even 155. This only happens when I eat a bit too much or a bit too much salt. The preachy part is that if you consistently have 150/100 you are eating too much and probably eating too much salt with minimal exercise. Sorry if that offends.
