Chemistry connection . The reason why Fe 2+ is more stable with Oxygen vs Fe 3+ is because of how the electrons fill the orbitals (A levels chem) Fe : 26th element Therefore : Fe = [Ar] 4s2 3d6 Ar represent 18 electrons (18th element) Fe 3+ = loss 3 electrons, but because s orbitals lower energy than d orbitals, you remove from the 4s first [Ar] 3d4 Vs Fe 2+ = 2 electrons lossed = [Ar] 3d5 (loss 2 from 4s) This half filled 3d subshell is more stable than 3d 4 D subshells can hold 10 electrons, p 6, s 2 So Ferrous is more stable because it has half filled 3d subshell. Vs ferric Ferric cause fenton rxn : Fe3+ and O2 ==> trouble aka Reactive oxidative species e.g. OH, O2 2-, H2O2 (which play a active role in many pathologies e.g. G6PD deficiency in hienz body formation) Result from Methaemaglobineamia which is a ADR to drugs like Sulfanomide (blue baby syndrome) and Benzocaine because they have nitrite deivities. This also promote allergic rxns usually skin related e.g. Steven Johnson Syndrome
