Always enjoy your videos, sir. A few comments I'd like to make: I've heard different theories about Prester John. You here talk about the Copts in Ethiopia being the inspiration for the myth, but I've also heard that the Nestorian Uighurs were the inspiration for it. Considering that before the Arab conquests a huge chunk of Asia and Africa was some species of Christianity or another, perhaps the myth is a vague memory of that far off time? Also, it's no surprise that there was intercourse between the Roman Pope and the Ethiopians, as the Ethiopians had a Pope before Rome did. The Coptic Pope pre dates that of Rome, and the Romans were aware of the "monophysite" church in Africa.

@@kalhistory4030 Tolkien knew his ancient and medieval history very well, so I think he would have been aware of the medieval kingdoms of Ethiopia. Especially as a Christian too, there's something of a romantic quality of a beleaguered christian kingdom, surrounded and isolated in a sea of islamic realms. I do think it inspired some of the place names in his works. There could also be a link between the blue wizards, who went to the far east of middle earth (to help the eastern men vs Sauron) and the legend of Prester John.

While Christian Abyssinia called itself "Ethiopia" since the 13th century, "Ethiopia" is a much older Greek term meaning Black Africa and it originally included all Africa south of the First Cataract, includin Nubia, Punt and anything else in the continent south of the Sahara. It's not that odd that for Europeans "Ethiopian" could mean any sort of Black African. More odd is that they confused them with Indians.

@@LuisAldamiz I got it from Aksum and Nubia: Warfare, Commerce, and Political Fictions in Ancient Northeast Africa by George Hatke which I read like half a decade ago so can't remember the Chapter exactly, just read the area about Ezana. He apparently started calling his realms Ethiopia after conquering/vassalizing Nubia, the Kingdom usually referred to as the Kingdom of Ethiopia by Mediterraneans before then while Axum was seen as nearer India, up to the middle ages by Europeans sometimes. Abyssinia is more medieval after the fall of Aksum in around 1000, used by Arabs but I don't know if it was a local or Arab word, but the locals call themselves Habasha.

If anyone wants to know more about the legend of Prester John I recommend the book "The Realm of Prester John" by Robert Silverberg. It is an incredibly expansive account on the topic which thoroughly explains the origins and different forms the legend have taken. Through the book you also get a decent overview of Mongol, Ethiopian, and Nestorian history along with some of the crusades.

On the Malian westward voyage; there were apparently two. Abu Bakr II had heard stories of a great fresh river that bisected the sea, and so he sent out an expedition to find it. Apparently one crew came back, claiming they had indeed found the river, but had been beset by terrible storms and whirlpools. Abu Bakr II then took it on himself to lead a second expedition, laden with trade goods, to find who or what might live up this river that was in the ocean... Nobody ever returned. What strikes me as fascinating here is that... this is a pretty accurate description of the Amazon River. The flow of the river is so strong, and has so much water, that there's a freshwater current pluming into the Atlantic ocean for miles, even beyond sight of land. Thereby creating a "river in the sea." I don't think it's all that unlikely that once or twice fishermen or whoever had gotten swept off course and "found" this outflow, and managed to return with the story. Who knows, with better portage and naval technology, there could have bene Malian colonies on the coast of Brazil. Oh well.

So historically "Ethiopia" is a term created by the Greeks to refer to dark skinned people from Africa and Asia. It did not represent a particular country in Africa. As the Greeks gave way to to the Romans in North Africa, Christianity took root in the Nile and parts of Northern Africa, bringing a lot of Africans into the sphere of early Christianity including some Sudanese kingdoms. These African Christians gave rise to some of the various legends of Ethiopian/Moorish saints in Medieval Europe such as St Maurice. Not only that, prior to the Romans adopting Christianity, they promoted Isis Worship across the Empire in Europe which was an African deity. Once the Arabs invaded North Africa, many of these Africans fled into Europe and helped spread Christianity there and man of them were around in Spain which was a very cosmopolitan place. And because of this historic African component in these Christian communities, you could still see them referred to as Ethiopians. In fact, some of the earliest Christian illuminated Manuscripts in Spain are very similar to those found in modern day Ethiopia and seem to suggest a common heritage. Examples of this are the Morgan Beatus/Beatus Pierpont and Beatus Liebana where many of the figures are shown wearing what looks like Afros. So all of this to say there is a long history of the presence of Africans or Ethiopians (burnt face) individuals in the European Christian tradition. Which between the 5th and 10th Century could have been talking of Sudanese Nubians from the Christan Kingdoms of Makuria and Alodia or Aksum. It was these Kingdoms who came into conflict with Saladin and eventually were sacked by the Muslims. As time went on and Christianity evolved into the Renaissance, the artists used the historic influence of North Africa, the Mediterranean and Turkey/Black Sea region in their artwork. Many of the costumes depicted are heavily influenced by Islamic fashion from these areas and you often see imitations of arabesque script in the paintings. And many of the holy saints and and Biblical figures are dressed in the costume of these regions and North Africa. And some of the costume of the Europeans themselves is also influenced by this as well along with the SIlk Road. The actual nation of Ethiopia came about in the 1200s after the fall of the Aksumite empire in the modern day Tigray Region. It was called the Ethiopian empire and the first emperor claimed to be a descendant of an ancient Aksumite king even though there was also an Ahmaric Solomonic dynasty claiming descent from the Queen of Sheba. They practiced a form of Coptic/Eastern Christianity which is basically Greek and Egyptian and based in Alexandria. Since Ethiopia at this time was far south of the Islamic lands of Egypt, they were seen as the last major Christian outpost in Africa and part of the Eastern Orthodox tradition. The previous Christian Kingdoms in Sudan were sacked in ancient times. Both the Ethiopian Empire and Askum along with the Nubian kingdoms before that all had significant trading networks in the Red Sea, Arabia and South Asia and were recorded by the Persians in the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea (similar to the term Eritrea, basically horn of Africa/Red Sea). It as the Muslim Arabs who were cutting off this trade and there was an alliance between the Byzantines and Ethiopians as part of resisting Islamic expansion. These are the Ethiopians that are referred to in the council of Florence. Also note that the Ge'ez script of Ethiopia is related to the scripts of Armenia and Georgia which are also early Christian states.

The Islamic conquest of North Africa effectively prevented communication and travel between Africans and Europeans. The European voyages of exploration were mostly about finding a way around this blockade. The crusades were also about trying to establish connections and trade that had been blocked by the Islamic conquests. What is a "murican"? Unfortunately for the continent of Africa and the many rich cultures, the majority of their history was an oral tradition that is probably mainly lost. @@gofigureme5749 There were some significant amounts of written accounts which were unfortunately lost during the colonial conquest as royal palaces along with their libraries were burnt in Benin, Ashanti, Bamun etc. The Sahel zone and just south of it had rich written historical traditions adopted from the Islamic world but unfortunately most of the Libraries of Northern Nigeria, Timbuktu etc but for their main epics remain untranslated and locked in archives and private collections. And in states organized enough to have a formal oral historian caste they are not just just unrecorded. Like there is this channel, "The Medicine Shell" that talks of going back to their village to talk to their local elders during a ceremony about their history. The main problem with oral history is that is yes, it is dying as we speak as communities modernize without writing it out but it isn't dead yet. The other problem is that well, it doesn't go nearly as far back as written history. An oral history going back 1000-2000 years is fineable but rare and impressive. The third problem is that it is kept in the minds of people thus subject to more alterations than written but given these are usually professional memorizers much less than we might assume it would change.

Really a great video, I didn't knew about that. Just a nitpick: the title is way too long and somewhat redundant, we have "Medieval African Explorers" which gives us a period in history (medieval), a group of people/culture/region (african) and what they did (explorers), which is great, but next we have "African History" and "Medieval Africa" which is redundant since we already knew all of that in "Medieval African Explorers". So, Africa is mentioned 4 times if you add the thumbnail (btw, the thumbnail is perfect) and medieval is mentioned 2 times, I think you could simplify the title excluding the redundant parts and leaving the first part of the title (Medieval African Explorers) and "Ethiopian Empire, Prestor John" (since these last two were the focus of the video).

Lisbon in particular was a unic city during the colonial era 1400s to 1600s because of its huge black-african population. Usually European countries had an ambassador or someone within the court who was a black african as an exotic decoration for the ruler. And usually the western powers send black-africans to the New World. Portugal however was the exception. Bringing in huge amont of `ngolans and some other western-africans to Lisbon. So much so that this shocked other european visitors to the city with great worry. Lisbon being viewed in a negative light compared to other major European Capitals. DNA-studies have discovered that portugese have much larger amounts of sub-saharan extraction compared to any other europeans, even in particular the spaniards who basically have none.

A small number of male lineages descend from Germanic tribes who arrived after the Roman period as ruling elites, including the Suebi, Buri, Vandals, Visigoths with the highest incidence occurring in northern and central Portugal. The pastoral Caucasus’s Alans left small traces in a few central-southern areas. @@TheHKY09 Well it kind of was. The Brittish historian, H. Morse Stephens, wrote in his book, Portugal (published in 1891), alot about the matter. His sources are the english traders who claimed that Portugals population was (at the time) at least 10% west-african. They were very critical to the social "experiment". Another source is the old British Encyclopedia from 1911, which blatantly claimed that the portugese from before 1441 were a diffirent people from the portugese after 1550 because of the west-african admixture. You wont find that part in todays British Encyclopedia of course.

There is a major misunderstanding when people hear of African people traveling into Europe because most of the people that traveled into Europe were from North Africa the people that live in North Africa are Berbers and Arabs who have a complexion that is swarthy/tawny and that means a yellowish tan color that is similar to a lion but it does not mean dark/black. I think you missed the famous Black Moors, almost certainly Fula from Tekrur, associated to the Almoravid Empire. They were rather soldiers or "adventurers" than explorers but they certainly reached Europe on their own account and are documented in Christian illustrated manuscripts about "the Moors". They are probably deserving more of a mention than others you do underline, you may have ignored them on account of them being Muslims but they did visit Muslim Europe (at the time Al Andalus, i.e. most of what is now Spain and Portugal) and in some cases are depicted playing chess, which is a fancy detail because we don't get many famous black chess players nowadays but once upon a time they were a significant fraction of European chess-lovers.

@@hardlo7146 yes, there are black moors for 3 reasons, the word wasn't used as an ethnic term but a religious term for African Muslims (Asian Muslims were Saracens) so there are cases of Europeans calling Black people moors, that's why the black character in that danish holiday is called a moor. 2 Berbers share alot of Genes with Senegambian people even today, after the Eurasian component that migrated in in pre-history that's unique to them, the next is Senegambian. There were and still are majority black Berber peoples, whether in North Africa like the Berbers in Sijilmassa, Morocco or the Sahara like the Tuaregs who actually have the most of those genes unique to Berbers. And don't write like Fula and Southern Black Berber groups were just incidental to the success of the Almoravids when they were important to it. The founder of the Almoravids retreated into modern day Mauritania where they allied with Southern Black Sanhaja Berbers and Takur proto-Fulani to both attack Wagadu and begin their conquest of Morocco.
