Very rusty medieval battle axe restoration. This rusty battle ax was found in a field. Ax of the 8th-9th century, early Slavs. The ax lay underground for 1,200 years. The ax was very rusty and damaged. I decided to restore the ax. Removed the rust and restored the blade. Made an ax handle. I hope you liked my restoration.

If these are very commonplace then what he did was a fun and interesting experiment. But if this was a rare artifact, I would have stopped at the rust removal. The moment metal was added it no longer has any archeological value. Personally, if it was me, I would have only done the electrolysis and other chemical de-rusting combined with wire brushing to clean it up then make as realistic a handle as possible just to show what it might have been like then frame and display it as an ancient artifact. I did something like that with some old bronze spear heads. They are now at the tips of several ash rods and on a rack in my office. At this point he now has a very nice decorative piece that more or less looks something like it might have a few centuries ago.

I don't actually know if the piece is that old or not. If that was the case, grinding, welding and polishing it means a total destruction of its historical significance. No museum restorer in the world would take this approach. Historical pieces should be preserved just stabilizing them from further damage. In any case, this axe, even if genuine, would worth nothing: it was a common item, forgen in hundred thousands, with no artistic meaning. Nothing for nothing, I would have kept it original.

Read the literature of historians digging up the settlements of Kievan Rus, they described all the axes of that period, and this is one of these types of axes, similar axes were found in battles Kievan Rus, and no, it is not suitable for the banal felling of a tree, because with such a size and weight it is easier for them to break a skull than cut down a tree.

Unless there is definitive evidence that this axe head is 1200 years old, you shouldn’t be saying this. If you have documented archaeological evidence, then fair enough. That being said, if it is what you say it is, you have destroyed an important piece of history, with all that work. It now looks like something you could buy from Amazon. Such a shame, your work is usually fantastic.
