This is indeed beautiful and calming! It's a glimpse into the Middle Ages that historians are helping us rediscover, challenging the 'Dark Age' stereotype. While it's true that this era faced significant challenges, like the Black Death (1347-1351), it's important to recognize that every period in history has its struggles. The 20th century saw devastating world wars, and today we grapple with health crises like cancer and HIV/AIDS, which are far more pervasive and deadly than anything the medieval world faced. Perhaps by viewing history more holistically, we can better appreciate the complexities of each era, including our own. This perspective might help us address current challenges with the same resilience shown by our ancestors.

When I see a dance that speeds up like this I think of the Abrams brothers, filmmakers in the USA. They did a very irreverent but hilarious spin on this in a film of a funeral procession that I viewed at the Kentucky Fried Theater in Madison, Wisconsin while they and I were students there. I love the dance and it makes me chuckle.

The dance music is from 16th c. Italy but the dance steps were choreographed by Tracie Brown in the 1970's under the pseudonym Signy Dimmridaela. She used examples such as the Maltese branle in Thoinot Arbeau’s "Orchesography" (published 1589) for inspiration.
