You're a great teacher, Mr. Hicks. Your knowledge of historical topics and your way of explaining them are outstanding. I'm also learning much from your clear and proper pronounciation (english is my 2nd language). Thank you, very much, for sharing your wisdom with us. Cheers from the "Grafschaft Ysenburg-Büdingen" ("Die Wetterau" today) in Germany!

I do remember Matt Easton, from Schola Gladiatoria channel, mentioning a few times that fencing schools were quite a source of trouble in the 13th century London, so much so that they eventualy got banned from the town and its surroundings

It's honestly a shame how incomplete some of these records are. It's interesting to see the day to day proceedings of the past and see what has adapted since then and what hasn't.

Nobility carried swords, gentry carried long daggers, but almost everygody, to last kitchen maid, had utility knife with blade of perhaps 4". Which is just enough if it hits some organ.

Dear Kevin, I would love to see you make a video on the battle of Aljubarrota. This battle fought on the 14 of August 1385 and was crucial to stop Spanish claims on the Portuguese crown and was a massive victory for the Anglo-Portuguese side against the Franco-Spanish invaders. Besides the main Portuguese force It saw the the participation of several hundred veteran English longbowmen that also fought in the Hundred Years’ War. This later resulted in the treaty of Windsor in 1386 which still stands today and sealed the Anglo-Portuguese alliance. As a proud Portuguese myself it would be an honour to hear you speak about this topic. As always, love your content and keep doing this amazing work!

As an American who recently moved to Portugal with my Portuguese wife, I can say there is bad blood seen against the Spanish among many older Portuguese. Maybe this historical battle is some of the original impetus.

It's incredible to think that records from centuries and even millennia ago have survived, giving us a direct window into the past. The idea that we can read names of individuals who lived so long ago and get glimpses into their lives never fails to amaze me. Truly fascinating stuff! Just a thought, if you haven't already, but would you release a video on Remembrance Day, showing the importance of the day and why for example the Poppy is so significant? ❤ from a subscriber.

As much as I wanted to hear about The London Beer Flood, this history is always so interesting. Crime and punishment throughout the centuries is always interesting in how just many things stay the same as many things change. For example, I remember hearing about a man in recent years who thwarted a purse snatching and was honored by the local sheriff for answer the hue and cry like the citizens did in the first case, a practice that goes all the way back to the Anglo-Saxons. And for the fun fact of this one for me, baddie Ralf there was arrested on my birthday, the 18th of October 😂

Great presentation! You have a knack to bring life to the stories you tell. As bad as London was, bear in mind Oxford was far worse. Kevin, as a “civilized” race, we grouped into settlements around 6,000 BC. Sure, there were other settlements before then, but I’m talking as a student of anthropology. So 6,000 BC = civilization. Only 8,000 years separates us from those hunter gatherers who had a rethink. Eight thousand years is a blink in time. Look where we’ve gone in that time: from the Lithic times to the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. From walking to riding horses to flying in metal tubes. Writing, advanced music and poetry, medicine... Today, we seem aliens from space compared to our ancestors eight thousand years ago. To sum it up: we created, discovered and advanced, but as a race, we humans have not matured much. Eight thousand years is nothing in the advancement of a species. Yes, underneath the veneer of civilization, we are still brutal beasts. Every day shows us that. But, unlike other species, we are trying to rise above what we were. And that makes us special. Again, superb show! Cheers!

Thanks Kevin great film. As a former policeman you appreciate the supposed lawlessness of those times. It’s interesting to note what the coroners reports were. I think Habeas Corpus had already been introduced by then by King John under pressure from the the Robber Barons. I don’t think a jury system had been introduced but travelling magistrates administered the law based on witness statements. The more attestations of your good character could be produced the more likely you would be acquitted. Not sure if presumption of innocence until proven guilty had been established but bail and paying off fines to stay out prison was commonplace. Society may not have changed much but the practice of law and accountability have become central to a judiciary that has become increasingly complicated for judgement to be obtained. Trial by TV is now the norm. Modern day pantheons dominate and cameras in courts as well as celebrity judges shine a light into all kinds of wickedness and deviancy.

What I did not expect is how well organised they were back then. Movies always give you the impression that killing in those times would go pretty much unnoticed and that murderers would rarely be caught. I suppose that it was harder to catch some without the tools we have today but they where indeed quite good at recording the accounts of those they did.

I have always found history interesting, yes the wars and the huge armies and vast empires that paint over swathes of the world map, yes they are rather fun to learn about, but whats more amazing is the individuals and their stories that forged these tales. we often say "Oh this city fell after a 2 year siege by a 10000 strong army" so casually but the fact is each of those 10000 men lived everyday lives like us for 2 years. they laughed, sometimes cried, suffered and like us, wonder. They are us, we are them. i love that kind of history but it's hard to find. But you sir, you with your amazing tales and lovely storytelling have given me a new window in life to learn what i wanted to learn. Thank you

Your story reminds me of when I asked my high school bus driver to sign to be a reference on my pistol permit( he was also a city policeman). He said yes and gave me this piece of advice, John if you ever have to use your pistol on a person make sure you kill them. I asked why you’re a policeman? I will never forget his answer, if you shoot to wound and go to court make sure there’s only one story told!
@baronedipiemonte3990

@OsakaRose that was quite poor advice, and I hope you never get a chance to put it to ill effect. @@baronedipiemonte3990 No it is very sound advice no matter what someone’s intentions are ( do harm/cause death) if they are wheeled into court someone will give them the sympathy vote. This way if you are protecting your life or a family member ,that’s all that gets told!
