So I researched a little into this and apparently, there were specifically made galleys at the time (13th century) that opened up with ramps, for the cavalry to enter the beach armed and prepared. Not only this, but it appears that while these galleys were made for the Mediterranean sea, the English and French built and hired them for their southern most waters. Now, these types of boats were made in small quantities, and very few could actually go up fully to the beach as shown in this movie, but it is interesting to see there is 'some' realism hidden in this scene (most definitely accidentally)

French invaded England several times: - in 1066, most of William the conqueror army was French khnights who became the root of the highest english nobility. Thereafter England become the backyard of the Plantagenêt empire, with its center in Loire valley in France. - in 1214 Louis of France, heir of the king Philippe II, defeated the army of John Landless at Roche aux Moines. In 1216 he succesfully landed in England, occupied London with the help of english barons. After the death of John Landless, the barons turned against him to avoid a strong monarchy, and paid him 10,000 mark to reembark - in 1485, Charles VIII provided to Henry Tudor (who grew up in france) his initial French force of 5,000 men including 1,000 Scots. They were the nucleus of the army who decisively defeated the Yorks at Bosworth. But of course, English history states that nobody invaded England after William the Conqueror, forgetting also the invasion of the Dutch William of Orange with the help of english parliament. It would contradict the invincibility of the Navy, which in reality lasted from the start of 18th c. to WW2

Kind of hilarious because If the strings of the long bows ever got wet they wouldn’t properly draw, which is why prior to the battle of crecy I believe they actually undid them the previous night and stored them so they wouldn’t get wet and maintain their draw weight, while the French and Genoese crossbow men did not and could barley be used in said battle. So this ridiculous kill shot when he was previously submerged in salt water is just very far fetched. I think what would help these scenes more these days is actual historical authenticity, I mean real history is crazy enough if you know where to look, you don’t need to embellish it. People would be more interested and taken aback if they actually put in the work of historical medieval battle, plenty of blood and guts to go around! Just in different ways.
@liampett13133 жыл бұрын
This is exactly the opposite of what you would want to do as a defender. You leave your enemy nowhere to retreat, now in modern day that would be prefect but records show the most casualties were inflicted during routes of the enemy. So just 5-10 percent of enemy casualties would cause a route, in which you mop of another 30-40 percent leaving the rest demoralized and understrength with likely little of their equipment and food.

@@pauljames9626 the "norman" army was composed of lords from Flanders, Normandy (99% neustrian), people from Brittany and soldiers of the kings of France, to whom they swore their loyalty and honor. Even William the Conqueror spoke only French and the Bayeux tapestry designates the army as "Franci". What do you want more? They were not french according to the modern interpretation, as the saxons were not English but "Angli" on the tapestry. But come on, they all came from nowadays France and were vassal of the king of France. William the Conqueror never put in question his loyalty to the king, even when he was declared king of England. It's only the Angevins who, yes, were considered to be "French" in a sense that they were of a Capetian branch, which in turn allowed them to have pretentions over the throne of France. That's why it's said that the Hundred Years War was a contest between the French kings of France and the French kings of England.

This is an historical re-enactment of the battle of Hastings. As you can see, the battlefield was much closer to the sea in those days, but the building of polders has made the ocean retreat. Despite being able to form a shield wall, it is broken by the charge of Norman knights. Towards the end, as he flees the battlefield, King Harold suffers an arrow to the eye and the battle is over. In a sign of reconciliation, William the Conqueror symbolically seals his victory by giving a maiden (who represents the Spirit of England) a French kiss.
@ghanova3 жыл бұрын
er no. the Saxons broke the shield wall. The House Carls maintained discipline the peasants didn't. The Norman horseman (not knights) didn't break the wall, they suckered the less disciplined troops into breaking the defensive formation. You are ignorant.
