This photo and music reminds me of having my photo taken against the ramparts of Kenilworth Castle many decades ago for my cold, winter birthday. (In fact, there is an eerie blizzard blowing round my cottage right now) I was annoyed with my boyfriend because he didn't zoom in and there is just an expanse of wall with me barely visible. It should have been an evocative photo opportunity had he followed/ understood my instructions. He used a reel of black & white photos. Photos were expensive back then so there was no question of doing them again. I was pretty with raven black hair and had haunted, yearning eyes. I am of Indian origin but pale-skinned and in b&w I had a universal look. Also b & w enhances the sense of atmosphere exuding from a venerable castle. Me, young, in black, against the aged grey stones... But in the selfie age it's meaningless, perhaps. I wish I had this or any tangible proof of a time when I had romance in my soul and often wished to be lost in something like a typical medieval fantasy of chivalry and ballads, of melancholic dreaminess and noble quests through lonely and lovely landscapes. Living not so far away, from the castle, I would often wander in and around the ruined and neglected edifice, imbibing the energy of its historical stones and hoping to hear echoes of its past; and in the present perhaps cross paths with a fellow dreamer, ( an escapee ftom the mundanity of modernity) - but that never happened. I'm now a tired, aging woman and more aware of the hardships of the medieval era but the wistfully beautiful yet bold music of the time contains comfort, lifting one to a higher plane, easing the burden of daily woes ( and, yes, it still also conjures up vague folklorish fantasies): but dismissing nostalgia, the entrancing nature of the melodies, in themselves, wash over your senses like energetic lullabies, and makes me think the newness of the music ( free from latterday clichés) must have filled those now long-gone people with a sense of wonder at the mystery of life and nurtured their hope and faith in existence, giving them the strength to surmount what the music also acknowledges and powefully evokes: the sadness, struggle and pain inherent in living.

Thank you so much for sharing such a beautifully detailed and heartfelt story. It’s incredible how music and imagery can evoke such vivid memories and emotions, connecting us to the past and even to moments of longing and dreams we hold within ourselves. The way you described your younger self against the ramparts of Kenilworth Castle painted a poignant and evocative picture of both romance and solitude. Your reflections on medieval music are truly moving-it does have a way of blending melancholy with hope, offering a sense of solace while honoring the hardships and beauty of life. The timelessness of those melodies, much like the ancient stones of the castle you wandered, seems to carry the whispers of history and the resilience of the human spirit. Thank you for letting this music accompany your journey through memory and imagination. Your words are a reminder of the depth and complexity of the human experience, and it’s an honor to know this music has provided some comfort and inspiration. May it continue to lift your spirit and nurture your soul. 🌿🎶✨

@celticmusicworldBEO Thank you for your wonderfully insightful response. Your words have expressed much more clearly what I was aiming to say. Our human stories are indeed different and complex but this beautiful, soul-liberating music, which you have so kindly posted for the benefit of others, gives me a sense of connection to the one mysterious and eternal human story of which we are all part ( what you said about solitude and romance struck me with it's obvious truth, in fact, all you have said resonates with me). This connection of self with the world emanates naturally from the music's timelessness and ethereal expansiveness ( and, like you say, it is expressive of human determination); listening to it is a solace and a delight much needed in this troubled and lonely world. Thank you again.☘️🕊
