I actually purchased this sword a few years ago and I love it! That was before this video but I think you did the sword justice. Funny you mention the gap between the cross guard and blade. I didn't think anything of it when I got mine but after a season of wearing it at the Renaissance Festival it did loosen up just as you were saying. Now it rattles if I hold the sword and shake it. I don't use it for anything other than show and Ren Fest so it is not a big deal to me. I may try dropping some gorilla glue in there or something to see if that fixes it (unless you have a better idea). Side note, after that first season of wearing it I had mixed feelings about the scabbard. The detail was great but for some reason it is quite a bit longer than the sword itself (at least 6 inches) so I would kick it with the side of my foot while walking and it also made sitting down quite difficult. Also it doesn't fit great inside the scabbard so since it is wooden on the inside it rattles quite a bit while walking. I ended up purchasing a custom made leather scabbard from another vendor that fits it nice and snug and I love this sword even more! I get compliments every year. Cheers.

Got mine yesterday. Found a german website where you can order it with import fee and shipping in the price includet, took only four weeks to arrive. The more i handle it the more i love it. And it doesnt come out the scabbard upside down. Man i love the blade and the grip. But still, the gap between the guard and the blade. Doesnt come out as well in the video but in real live it is quite significant...not comparable to an Albion sword but it comes with a scabbard to a much more affordable price. And with exception of that gap it is just perfect in every way. Really a high end sword. Thank you your video got my to buying it!

I'm really glad you mentioned about the gap. I had exactly the same sword, there was some slight movement of the tang in the handle which put me off and then when I inspected the gap closer it bothered me so much I actually sent the sword back for a refund. However after watching this video I kinda want to buy it all over again. Let us hope that one day DSA take note and fix it...as I'm sure it would be quite simple for them to do and no doubt will make the sword more durable. All in all - Great video, great review. :) This has to be one of my favourite channels by far!!!

+Mr Man Thanks! Certainly that is why I brought it up. I don't have a lot that is negative to say about this sword, but gaps in hilt furniture is one of those "small" things that can have a huge negative impact on the sword down the road.

I have the two-handed Norman sword. The big brother of this sword. I corrected the looseness of the scabbard. I glued a small square of leather inside the mouth of the scabbard. It tightened right up.

A bit anachronistic for a Norman sword. That the particular pommel and crossguard is something you would see on a 14th-century sword, not an 11th-century sword.

I enjoy how you speak to the history of the sword to frame this episode. Your review of pros and cons was nicely done. I would of liked to have known about your thoughts on the grips leather? wrapping and construction. I also would have liked to of seen some more aggressive testing of the blade to see if it would have etched . The different hardness in the blade , how do you think it would effect the product that is how well does it hold an edge. I know the sword is just on loan so there are limits to what you can do. The production value in your reviews are getting polished. I really been wanting to see this video ! Most excellent. BTW That fragment the tapestry above your television was very cool.
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 8 жыл бұрын
+Philip Adam I did mention that the wrap is very nice, not loose and feels good in the hand. DSA used pretty standard construction of grips as far an I'm aware. It is worth noting that they did sew it on, but likely epoxied it as well.They actually have the surface of the blade at a pretty high HRc, with the core being much softer. That should give it a decent tradeoff between keeping and edge and nor marring too bade, but also being flexible.

Great video. Very objective and honest. I really like this sword. I've just started collecting with the Tinker Longsword, and while I love it, I am already looking forward to my next piece. After reading and viewing some videos and articles, and after watching this, I'm set to go for Darksword next. Something about these blades just resonates quality. It's going to be either this one or the Medieval Knight.

+L.J.H Groenewoud The Specs on those two swords are nearly identical, obviously different designs with blade taper etc, but I would hazard a guess that they more or less handle the same. Assuming build quality and the like is also these same I'd say either one if probably a good buy.

Thank you for a good review. I really liked what you said about it just being fun to wear. Two questions. Do know if there is much difference between this sword and their Crusader sword? They look very similar. The other question is that with you bad experience with the Viking sword, would you still recommend buying from DSA? I am a church school teacher and don't make much. It would be my first and probably only sword. Thank you for your help and time. God bless.
@medievalreview

Jim Wilson If you are going to buy one sword, and need a better option go with an Albino squire line. I don't immediately mistrust DSA, but I think quality control issues matter more for someone buying only 1 sword. I don't like weapon failures, especially with the risk, but it is also a fact of life when using any weapon. So my recommendation for buying an arming sword, on a tight budget, when you are only going to get one. get and Albion 13th century knightly sword.

Medieval Review Thank you for your help and response. I will look into that. Albion isn't forged is it? Cut and ground more like a production knife blade?
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 8 жыл бұрын
Correct. They use a CNC mill to cut the general shape, and then use a variety of grinding and filing methods to finish. Truly well forged swords can be more expensive due to the effort, and have no real functional advantage.

You mentioned that you weren't sure if the issue of the scabbard not having enough retention was with the Norman sword specifically or not. I own a Longford from DSA, and it actually has the same problem. When I first got it, the scabbard hugged the sword very tightly, but it lost its tight retention fairly quickly.

The Jarl by Albion has a slight space between the blade and the cross guard as well. How would that gap be closed? Would it be a closer machining issue to fit more exact? Would that require a CNC machine or is it possible to do by hand without making the cost go up considerably? Thanks for the reviews brother, much appreciated.
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 8 жыл бұрын
Albion's uses CNC for their blades, and cast molds for their hilt furniture. if their mold is not super accurate there will be a gap. I'm surprosed thay they have a noticeable gap in any of their swords, but it is what it is. My guess is, with Albion, you don't need to worry about it.

+Medieval Review Gotcha, I just got The Wolfsbane by Darksword Armory and the cross guard had a considerable gap between it and the blade and after some cutting tests it now wiggles back and forth slightly. It doesn't move up or down the blade or side to side at all, just wiggles a bit, but for $830 I don't think it should do that right? Would love your review of that and their Warmonger recent release.

Excellent job on the review. I actually watched it twice, it was just that entertaining. lol. When you spoke of simply wearing it and how much enjoyment it brought you it resonated with me. That is one of the best intangibles of a well made sword. We all love l[king at them for their aesthetics and feeling the balance and connection when wielding (It was quite obvious how much fun you had there) but sometimes simply holding or wearing said object can itself ne incredibly uplifting. That is a beautiful historically plausible sword. Darksword did an awesome job in its design and execution. I find myself almost wanting one. The main deterrent to me at this price range is the gap in the guard. It would not be that much harder to get it close then file and either hammer or preferably press fit it to the blade. (c'mon Darksword, get this detail right. you should be better than that at this point) The scabbard I don't have an issue with as there are simple remedies as long as it's well made. All in all great and honest review. Thank you very much for continuing to provide us with relevant content in an engaging format.

What would you recommend for a first buy? I'm thinking my first should be a functional yet simple arming sword. The kind that feels good in the hand, a cut and thrust, but with just a tad more focus on the cut. I think this one looks good, but it's just a bit too short for me. I'm rather tall, at 187cm, so I'd much rather go for a full length arming sword. The design on this, except for the length, is spot on. It's just brilliant. The ring pommel, as you said, it just looks awesome. So, no over engineered, gold inlayed bullshit, just a simple, yet highly functional arming sword. I'm torn between brands, but I'm thinking in this price range, or maybe a little cheaper, if at all possible, without completely fucking up the functional part. If you could give me a few specifics, point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Just found your channel, immediately subscribed after seeing your 101 buyers guide, because you seem to know what you're talking about. Alright, keep putting out these in depth reviews. It's really cool to see all your swords. I'm like, just struggling not to buy an Albion right away, because I really want to know if I even like swords, and what I like in swords, before I put half a months income into one =D.

You are only slightly taller than me. So you are probably looking for that 75-80 cm blade length... Albion does have more budget friendly swords including this one: www.albion-swords.com/swords/albion/squire/sword-squire-knightly.htm But there are other budget items, this one being a decent option: www.valiant-armoury.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=61&product_id=64

Will certainly let you know, it's arriving in about 1 and a half weeks. Reason I decided to get it is due to the fact that I am scottish however much of my ancestry is anglo saxon and also nordic and very little celtic influence. My second name "Whitaker" goes back to the era of the norman conquest and the Whitaker nobles were one of the few who fought against the normans but did not lose their lands. Felt it would be appropriate to get a Norman sword seeing as though a claymore or a viking sword would be not exactly unique.

I have the 15 century 1 1/2 hand from darkswords armory and the scabbard does not hold the sword properly to. I think that is because the historic scabberds were lined with fur or felt to protect the sword from falling out, even on horseback. The Darkswords Armory scabberd is just wood wrappedin leather.

Just so you know the loose scabbards thing is a common issue. It's probably not as much of an issue with your Viking sword because it has very little distal taper compared to most of their European swords they offer. Additionally I wholeheartedly agree with you when it comes to the crossguard. I believe you and I both disgust this point before as well. In my opinion the one thing that most lower end sword companies can do to improve their quality is to pressure fit their guards. Even tack welding them for the cheaper blades would be a vast Improvement. Historically and presently Dark Sword is still known for having loose guards. You also may be interested to know that one of the reasons their peans are so clean is because they used a hybrid attachment method for their pommels. They actually have a threaded tang that they use a nut to screw the pommel and grip on with. Then after that they peen on the pommel. That is one of the things that results in such a study blade. Also I do love their grips, they feel far more rugged than any other sword company out there.

The hell they do, the lip of their leather wraps isn't secured well at all, the round grips that try to turn and roll on your hand end up loosening it easily. Do you handle yours at all?

Just stumbled upon your channel and had to subscribe. Very informative videos. I was wondering. How does this sword handle compared to Albion swords of similar design, from a purely practical standpoint? I don't know if they make swords as short as this one or if you've tried other Albions that you don't own yourself (maybe the Albion Norman Sword or Knight Sword). Is the difference as big as the price difference, if that makes sense? Comparing them myself would be ideal, but that is simply not possible where I live in Denmark. Thanks in advance!
@medievalreview

Hard to say exactly, Albions are pretty much always worth the price in my opinion. But I feel that this sword does really stand out as one of the better to come from Darksword. Where Albions really benefit is the the fine tuning of the construction. I don't think this sword matches that aspect of Albion, but un handling it is really very solid.

I've always had a hit-and-miss relationship with Darksword Armory. They do a nice job on their swords overall, but, at least to me, they feel very blade heavy, almost _too_ heavy for the size they are. I don't know, if anything, I felt the blades were just a little too thick, which affects the cutting performance (though, they end up bulletproof in terms of durability). Though, that being said, I've become rather spoiled by handling mostly custom made pieces and Albions at cutting events :P Great video!

Gaps in between the cross guard and the blade are historically correct. If you look at actually medieval examples they will often have an even larger gap than this sword. I don’t believe that gaps like this should be looked at as a flaw, and they do not necessarily cause loosening of the guard. That is more often caused by a poor fit of the hole on the opposite side with the tang.
@Bru741iX

The biggest grief i have this this sword, is the slight diamond cross section that starts after the fuller ends. None of the swords from the period had those, and i've noticed a lot of sword producers make their viking era and early medieval period swords with these ridges. To be honest, it looks like crap, and it's not a very accurate reproduction when they have these. Take a look at Albions. None of their arming swords, other than the types with a regular diamond cross section AND a fuller, has these ridges. The same goes for the historical swords. If you compare this to Albions Norman, which is essentially the same sword, it's completely flat after the fuller ends. Albions Senlac and Bayeux which are also type Xa's, are also flat. You'd think that with realtivly expensive swords, the geometry of the blade would be nearly identical to the original swords. I guess only Albion, and custom sword makers cares for this. It might be a way to cut down prices, by speeding up the process of making the sword. But for people like me, that cares for historical accuracy, it's a big pain in the neck.

+Medieval Review Well I'm looking at cheapest Albions in Kult of Athena like "Albion knight's sword", "Albion Bayeux Sword" and few others. I'm not rich enough to buy swords that are $1000+ but even those that cost around $800 are proven to be good (because they are Albion). On other hand I'm quite new to swords collecting so maybe for start something cheaper, but decent is better choice. I'm quite afraid to accidentally break or damage or "miss-maintain" expensive sword. I've been collecting modern knives (combat oriented) for some time, but swords seem to be quite different thing. Also I'm not intended to have big collection - 1 functional sword per year (as they are expensive) is good enough for me.
@medievalreview
@medievalreview 8 жыл бұрын
You mostly planning on display, and cut tests? This DSA as an example is a good one for someone who doesn't want to break the bank, but gets a good package deal. Albions are expensive and you don't get things like scabbards which just means additional costs down the road. You can also get something like a Windlass just to get used to what a bare minimum functional sword could be like, and then getting the better swords can help grow your understanding. And if you ever have questions I am more than happy to give my input, and I suggest you read up on /r/sword on reddit, sword buyers guide (and their forums) and reviews on myarmory. Also do you ave plans to participate in HEMA or some other practitioner's sport / martial art. You can learn a lot from people who are involved in those things as well, and maybe even get to try some swords.

+Medieval Review thank you very much for your advises. Yes I want swords for display and cut tests only, but I want only real ones, no wall hangers nor SLO's. Also I'm not gonna have many swords anyway so I highly prefer quality over quantity. In the beginning of this year I already purchased two swords (my first ones) that are quite cheap (each for around $200 + shipping costs + some taxes) but seems to be functional, sharp and strong enough. And also beautiful. But those are low end functional swords and probably not historically right. This DSA sword seems like a good option for my next purchase (I really like how it looks), but next purchase will have to wait until I make enough money to feel myself rich enough to buy another sword. And thanks for advice, I will read that sword buyers guide and reviews. I also seen your 1 hour long video about sword collecting which was very helpful, thanks for that too! HEMA seems attractive to me, but here in Lithuania HEMA is very rare and almost unknown martial art. There is a club not too far from me that teaches only sword and buckler and I'm thinking of joining it, but I'm already doing few other martial arts since long ago and I'm not sure if I can keep with so much stuff, but I'll see. Also I don't want to be annoying, but just one more question - is EN45 steel any good for swords? And sorry for my broken English, it's not my native language so I might do mistakes.

This sword is not historically accurate at all... the wheel pommel (J1) would not of had a coin/crest insert for another couple hundred years. The cross-guard is a later medieval style.

@@lukerope1906 , I agree! And as much as I love extremely pointy swords, I have to say that the point on this one is way too acute for a sword that's supposed to be representative of the 11th(or even 12th) century! Also, the crossguard would not have that cusp or "widow's peak"-type protuberance in the center. It would just be flat, and straight across on that plane.

Perhaps you forgot that the franks were also a germanic people. The franks just latinized themselves a bit during the germanic invasion of post-celtic gaul.

Well, he did bring up the Franks in a phrase about germanic social traits. He said "despite the normans' conversion to christianity and their adoption of frankish ways of life, the normans retained many of the traits of their germanic ancestors". The frankish ways of life were also very germanic in many ways.

To be honest..they wouldn't have come any better than that in the 11th century. They were a tad crude & made functional.. Patches & blemishes on the blade or slight misalignments were common..

The gap between the sword and guard is there for a reason! Its so the blade can bend! Or it will break! If it was butted to the blade it would snap off at the guard due to restriction of steel! It's how steel work's! Same as quenching! Soft and hard metals together its called the art of steel!!

@medievalreview 8 жыл бұрын
+John Jacomb Well, I actually got that part wrong, I've added a note in the video, but for your benefit: The pricing model they use is: Blunt blade & Scabbard : $410.00 Sharpened blade & Scabbard : $440.00 Blunt blade, Scabbard & Interlaced Sword Belt : $495.00 Sharpened blade, Scabbard & Interlaced Sword Belt : $525.00 So you get the scabbard no matter what, you pay extra for sharpening and the belt.
