The main problem is nowadays youtubers and high industry standards set an unrealistic expectation bar for young minds these days. Coding is a skill it takes years to master it. It's not like I went so and so months into coding and cracked 80lpa package. This is the main reason students don't focus on developing skills first rather focus on that "80 lpa".

Mediocrity has always been there… you can always look around in any office and see out of 10 employees 2 are actually adding value and participating in growth, rest 8 are just there to do average work with average outcome. Mediocrity was funded by big players earlier, now only top 2 of those employees are still able to get jobs and good paycheques
@saptarshipal674328 күн бұрын
@@atinder90a There are nuances to that. Let's consider service based companies they actually want the mediocrity. For the type of work they make their engineers do and the amount they pay that is what can be given. But just see what have they started asking the questions. The level of questions have tripled. But the payment has remained same and so has the level of work. I have first hand experience that too from last week. My closest friend cleared the aptitude and coding round test. In interview he was asked questions even from mid level DP. The round of interview was for digital or prime. However they selected him for Ninja. When we tried to see if he was exception or it happened with few more. Then it was actually seen earlier who who could easily be considered good engineers are now now called mediocre because there clearly lack of good projects. If any guy could have all test cases pass in a coding test and then could answer dp question that too of a TCS exam. There was no way that person would not be included in that team. We even called few people working on certain type of projects and where he is placed and we actually understand there are lack of projects and these people will be on bench until new projects come up. And it is but only obvious that they won't paying 4-5 lakhs of salary for sitting on the bench. And there is no doubt about the fact the no. of good engineers have increased from past decade. A good engineer can't suddenly become mediocre because of lack of projects that are being developed.

To start a big ambitious venture you 99.9% of the times need to raise funding and even if you fail noone will ask that money back. The only risk people are afraid to take is leaving the comfy guaranteed paycheck for uncertainty of starting their own venture which might fail and they'd be living worse life for years than they did in their job.

Typically I do not comment on provocative videos (thumbnail in particular), but I had a few thoughts as a US-born Indian who has done startups in the past: 1. The core of every business is ability to generate money, so who is going to pay you for your startup products? Generic answers like "obviously the customer" or "everyone" just doesn't cut it if you plan on going into business. You cannot afford to not know the answer to this question when the default mindset of most people is to save as much money as possible for retirement. 2. You mentioned a risk averse mindset - I agree that this mentality is prevalent, but not necessarily because it's safer as an employee. If you don't have guaranteed clientele, it just doesn't make any sense to go into the startup business, regardless of how good you might think your product is. 3. "build something that people want and solves a problem" (the typical Elon Musk / entrepreneurial quote), except most people don't even know what they want. Not only that, but there's an insane amount of survivorship bias from successful company CEO's (yes, the FAANG type companies). 4. Do people genuinely enjoy holding the highest amount of responsibility in a company? Nobody will care about the company more than the C-suite executives because other employees simply have no skin in the game. In many cases, CEO's literally just people manage, not even build the products. 5. Blind confidence doesn't guarantee that you will succeed and it is brutal if you think by the 'graces of God' that your startup will succeed. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from pursuing a startup and willing to hear people out about counterpoints that aren't ad hominem.
@hashamreyaz2464Ай бұрын
I think the whole comment can be condenced into one line " no matter what you do, you can and most probably will fail ". One of the biggest points that the video fails to mention is that, it's much easier to take a risk in US/China than it is in India. You can be a waiter somewhere in those countries and still make a decent living, giving you the opportunity to take risks. It's just not true in India for now. The biggest problem for the country is not the risk averse mindset of people, but the corrupt politicians (from all parties) that have kept india in the disastrous stagnant state we're in. Most of our taxes get looted instead of being used to boost the living standards of the common people. But in the end, common people are blamed for mediocrity.
@abhishekpal7291Ай бұрын
And that too comparing countries like USA and China with India just on the coding field.. forgetting all the situations and other sectors which does matter to shape the thinking survivor bias and risk appetite of a society. Agreed with the point that 6 months 1 year on self would improve one for sure. But how can you just generalise that people, students wasting time on insta more than those in the USA ?
@architbarve2489Ай бұрын
Finally someone talking in realistic terms, if someone is well established in tech, knows things in and out, then it's a fair argument that go make a startup, but his major audience is cs engineering students, so it's a bit unrealistic that someone as young as a student will make a startup that will be successful enough to make a living. He comes from IITR where getting placed is not challenge rather a choice and has not struggled in diversity based hiring , if you don't get placed, your alumni network can and will pull some strings to get him placed. He does not realize this is not the case for majority of the cs engineering students.

A story of my friend : 1. Working in IT industry since 15 years. (His father was an auto driver) 2. Worked for 5 years in US which enabled him to get rid of Financial burden. 3. Comes back to India, Sets up a computer library for almost free (point based system ex. read a book and earn 100 points etc) for his village. 4. Identifies bright students from village and guide them and enable them to nurture their talent. 5. Have no youtube channel, less s-media presense and does the groud work when it comes to enabling young minds. 6. He has only one student so far who he thinks will be good in future. This too came after lot of struggle but he still continuing to do so. He doesnt believe in just giving something for free but rather think of enabling and getting things done. His success expectation is to create atleast one person who will do the same in future for a village / group of people. Is it relevent here ? @@okboss-ln5mq Correct, you spoke my mind. India needs a manufacturing boom. IT doesn’t create many jobs, not enough to lift the majority of Indians from poverty. Also, paths of economic mobilization are very few in India; even these paths have very limited success rates (JEE/NEET/GATE/UPSC). Also, the education system in India is not good enough to support manufacturing, as vocational training is shit and not given in schools that much. Also, in India, the infrastructure is not good enough to support a large-scale manufacturing boom. Red tape is extreme, and many businesses suffer from this. Thus, it's goal is to reward the people who are keeping both the verticles up. Beyond that, the lack of competition and opportunities for restaurants and riders, is what gets them to stick to Zomato anyhow. That is how a monopoly works, by understanding what to capitalize and what to reward! Thus, please stop having a nobility bias about everything in the world. Sir, I would like to humbly request you to consider what alternative options these delivery executives might have if not for platforms like Zomato. In this world, people earn in proportion to the effort they put in and the value they create. If top executives earn significantly higher salaries, it is a reflection of the valuable contributions they make, as opposed to delivery executives whose jobs, relatively speaking, are easier to acquire and perform. This boils down to the principles of demand and supply. Often, as humans, we tend to complain about our circumstances. However, both we and the delivery partners need to recognize that there is a large supply of individuals willing to take up such roles. If delivery companies like Zomato were to increase wages significantly, it would upset this balance. Ultimately, if someone feels they are underpaid, they need to step out of their comfort zone, learn new skills, and evolve. Today, there is nothing stopping these delivery executives from learning in-demand skills, like coding, and potentially joining Zomato at a senior level. Unfortunately, a mindset of mediocrity often holds them back from striving for growth. On a personal note, I know of several individuals who began their careers in delivery roles but chose to upskill themselves and have now transitioned to better opportunities. Their success was a result of their determination to act, rather than merely complain about their circumstances.

No matter how much motivation is given, only a tiny fraction-about 0.1%-might secure jobs after AI takes over, and he seems aware of that. I wonder if he will continue launching new cohorts despite this perspective.

Current AI dug it's own grave. People have globally started using AI for programming and a good amount of code is AI generated. AI can't be trained with data that was created by itself, this leads to subpar and a steep fall in quality of the AI output. Everybody is using AI, and now there's a scarcity of good code. AI today has a hit a plateau it will never overcome unless an entirely new innovation comes in. We need skilled programmers. We will always need skilled programmers. The way programmers communicate with computers changes, but skilled programmers are always an asset that the market is short of. This is why product based companies have insane salaries and service based companies have peanut salaries.

I interviewed 50 software engineers last month with an average experience of 8 years and 80% didn't know how to find an item in an array without using any built-in methods. I mean, I don't know how these guys survived in the industry for so long.

Because what the companies make you do isn't really challenging work that would make you think and learn new skills. It's the reality of today. Sitting in India, I can do fancy courses from MIT Open courseware or Coursera, leetcode to eternity, and I don't even get an opportunity to apply in my actual job. In every company that I've worked with before, the skills tested in the interview have always been much higher than what I've had to apply in my actual job. It's both an employer as well as an employee problem.

But , the question I am now asking you , if you feel by I am sorry , but I don't want to hurt you any : Why you don't start any company or do a good job ? Why most IITIANS have come in youtube platform ? They do hardwork in 11th and 12th standard , then they go to IIT , there they do all hardwork , and.... after graduating , they just start making videos on KZbin. Why ?

Hey Harkirat loved your video, and how you talked about mediocrity and having a employee/risk free mindset, but one thing i would like to add here is, Actually people do want to start but because there are too many unstructured resources, click bait content and people are impatient they drop the idea of building something of there own, Not because they don’t want to do it. But because they can’t find the right path. So currently I’m building a community for such people only who are just starting out you can become a part of initiative and turn your idea into reality.

The real reason behind mediocrity is tutorial videos on KZbin back in the day there are only a few channels that provided knowledge and they are genuinely good but nowadays everyone is a "teacher" and they don't know what is required in the market and they are teaching outdated things that is no longer required in the market you need to be competitive and learn more and more because this industry is never stable other thing is developers rely too much on gpt let's say you had an error you copy the error you paste it on gpt and gpt solves it but from that you just gain the knowledge of how to handle that error nothing else. If you search the same error on stack overflow you will learn more than that. The mindset that you are talking about is accurate nowadays Indians want to be computer science engineers just to gain a good-paying job and they don't want to build something for the market the outsourcing graph is decreasing day by day because everyone is happy with their salary. If this continues maybe 10-15 years they will survive but after that they will be eaten alive by the AI and the core developers which are actually building something.

I think you are slightly mistaken-it might be true for an older generation (21+), but the people I meet are overambitious. However, they aren’t ambitious to the extent of wanting to bring about a revolutionary change (I hope to meet someone like that someday). The overambitious ones I encounter aren’t ready to put in the effort required for their ambitions. They sign me up for a project (which is a short-term thing), and after I’ve invested my time, skills, and created a plan to follow, they fail to deliver-even though it’s their own initiative. It’s like telling a boss what to do.

One example of scarcity mindset - people in india will watch around 20 hours of ads per month but will never pay 120 rupees for youtube premium even when they are capable of earning way more than 120 rupees in 20 hours. Of course there are people who can't afford, but those who can afford, are also not willing to pay to buy time. This mindset of not paying for services/upskilling/tools/ai tools is something that is holding us back IMO

You can call me salty but the same engineers who got a job for basically just having a CS degree worked for 10-13 years gained real life experience and built projects for large companies and now are calling new graduates mediocre. I get that a lot of people graduate without any CS knowledge but there are also people who graduate with 10x more knowledge than a person 10-12 years ago in the same 4 years span. I need those senior devs to put themselves in a current graduates shoes and think how they would survive in the current situation. There are a lot of mediocre jobs 4-9lpa but the second you start aiming for better jobs, thats when the problem starts. Even a new graduate is expected to have senior dev experience when they graduate and lets say you can even that experience in 6-12 months of dedicated hardwork. But what are you supposed to do when there are 1-2 lakh more people doing the same stuff as you? Do even better? Ok but then where does the cycle end?
