I love how KZbin is now recommending smaller channels. this was a great chat with a lot to think about.

“I believe life is a continuum, and that no one really dies, they just drop their physical body and we'll all meet again, like the song says. It's sad but it's not devastating if you think like that... We're all going to be fine at the end of the story.” - David Lynch

This is a good vid. Thinking about this always paralyses me for a few months but recently I said to myself: okay then why am I wasting precious time worrying about something I have no control of. Then in the worst I went to a library and read that one kid said "I think its going to be like it was before I was born" and that immediately comforted me. I dont know what happens after life but now I can fully and use the thoughts about life finitude as fuel to really focus on what is important for me, to do the things I really want to do and not waste any more time with unnecessary stuff. Like okayy it will happen but I still have time here so why not focus on life matters instead of thoughts about death. What do I want to accomplish? I got nothing to worry about. I think that can be really empowering. Hope you have a great day!

Hi @michaljanovsky, you are so right! The fear shouldn't be that we will die someday, it should be that we wouldn't LIVE before that happens.

Enlightenment is like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute... but also realizing mid-air that the airplane never existed, gravity is a conspiracy, and you're actually a bird that forgot it could fly. So, here's the deal: I’m over here yelling, “Jump!” God’s over here double-yelling, “Jump!” Infinite love is doing cartwheels, holding a big neon sign saying, “Jump!” And you're like, “Wait, but what if I splat?” And I'm like, “Bro, spoiler alert: there’s no splat. There’s no ground. It’s just freefall, forever. Like an endless roller coaster, but without the nausea and overpriced souvenir photos.” Still, you're clinging to your imaginary airplane seat, thinking, “But what if falling forever isn’t great?” Which, I gotta say, is the most human thing ever. We’d rather stay in our imaginary airplanes of fear than risk falling into the infinite trampoline pit of love. But eventually, you jump. And it’s terrifying. And amazing. And you’re screaming for like the first eternity. And then it hits you: “Wait… I can’t hit anything!” And then you’re just falling, laughing, and yelling back at the airplane, “Why didn’t anyone tell me sooner?!” And God’s like, “Dude, I literally told you. Like, 17 times.”

Thanks for tackling a subject that many people aren't willing to face head on. Personally I don't believe in souls but I'm not a nihilist, you can live your life with purpose even if you know it doesn't last forever. I agree with you about the benefits of thinking about death as a kind of bullshit filter, as recognising you will die one day can help you to focus on what's important to you in the here-and-now. There's a piece of art that I like by Charles Allan Gilbert called "All is Vanity", I think it is a form of "memento mori".

Hi @blahdelablah, cool handle BTW! Thanks for the C.A.Gilbert, a little macabre, but it's the exact same death's head my late uncle had painted on his guitar case which now decorates my living room Keith Richards style, I always wondered where he got the design from. Many thanks.

Interesting talk. I believe thinking about the fact that my time on earth is not infinite makes me more grateful for the incredible gift of possibilities each day brings. Oh, you might want to correct the caption. I believe you were referring to A Christmas Carol. A Christmas Story is a bit more snarky, lol.

Death will cut out the BS. Seeing it first hand ought to be part of education system imho. Supposedly Siddhartha/buddha was terribly shook by it; powered his endeavor to get real

Don't be sorry! It's the most important thing you'll ever (or perhaps avoid) to think. I'm not a dualist, I'm a physicalist, so I don't believe in the existence of a soul. I think it's just another comforting lie we tell ourselves. You've never truly faced death unless you've stripped yourself of all illusions about what this reality really is.

Hi Mikaila, so glad I caught your new KZbin video, God bless the algorithm! And today's topic is…DEATH…ok…🥴 I know I'm always quoting Ivan Turgenov's Fathers and Sons, I assure you I have read other Russians but he just always seems so germain to your work, so here it goes…”Death is an old joke, but each individual encounters it anew “ I hope you are doing ok and have friends or family you can reach out to if you're not. A bunch of us are reading ‘A Little Life’ by Hanya Yanagihara over on Alana Estelle's channel. It's kind of a brutal slog of a read, not sure I can really recommend it, but if nothing else it's an amazing treatise on the power of friendship in difficult times, the prose is excellent and the story telling is top notch. But GOD is it depressing! You'd want to make sure you were in the right headspace before you tried to tackle those 800 unbelievably gay pages of pure Debbie Downer meets The Dubliners in a pub down on Main Street with the soundtrack to The Big Chill playing in the background. Oh God, here I am doling out the most despicable literary advice in the world. I should be prescribing a warm afghan, a hot cup of Chamomile tea, and a copy of Cache Lake Country by John J. Rowlands. Enjoy!
@mikailalockhart11 күн бұрын
@@dougirvin2413 haha yes. I like to switch up my topics every now and then, getting deep sometimes. I have read a Little Life before, multiple times, and enjoy it! But I can see what you mean about it being depressing, it can be a lot to handle sometimes, but there’s some pretty poignant moments that are full of love. I admire the author for putting out something so controversial and discussion worthy haha.
