'Be authentic at your own risk, for you will be carved up on the alter of jealous rage and envy, socially destroyed, outcasted, painted as a demon, the opposite to what you truly are. I chose not to participate and suffered, so I learned to mimic the mimics in a way that I wouldn't become a mimic but was able to be around the mimics who were mimicking other mimics who wanted to be mimics even though I wasn't a mimic and wanted to be unique I came to realize I had become like every other mimic in that "want to be" as opposed to just being... I played this mimic game for a long time. Then... One day I woke up and now, now I just exist and I have nothing to say, I just observe. I don't even know how to express feelings anymore. I live with depression and anxiety for so long, that I kind of don't care. I don't care enough to put on a mask, I don't care enough to assume everyone one wears a mask, I might have a trouble sometimes figuring how to act in any given situation, but I try not give anything else other than authentic me. Things I care about, things I worry about, trying to give other space and to give them acknowledgement, that they are seen, they are listened to, small mercies, little kindness. I don't think I am unique in this, that I am better for doing so, I don't care how people take it... There is a lot of things I cannot give to the people around me, but I try to give what little I can. And what I can't, not worth thinking about... I still do, I worry, but then comes the burn out, and thus only the things I can do matter. Little victories. If you share little kindness forward it's all the repayment I'll ever need.

We are born to be modelled by the culture of our surroundings. There is nothing modern about that. What is modern, is that we live like sardines, crowded. So instead of war drums and spears we use masks to survive among so many strangers. And here the individualism kicks in. Everyone is a stranger, potential threat. So we wear masks everywhere. About this fake it till you make it part - we are born into a culture. Modelled from the beginning. The truest self, stemming from the will, is the persona we create, try to be it, and then become it. It is the only thing we, with our willpower, decided to create - human is a mold. Culture molds, until he or she model themselves on their own, from the culture parts we inherit, in our own shape. There is nothing fake about that.

The mask is like both a protector and a parasite. The mask helps hide our weaknesses and at the same time can project a false enticing image to trick others into loving and liking our persona. Tragically this mask becomes exhausting to maintain yet there is a great fear that lurks in the psyche “what if everyone dislikes me when I’m exposed”. Personally I’ve found it more securing forming relationships from a point of warts and all, you have more energy by just simply being you and you’re more relaxed (a women who projects a mask of beauty will fear losing that just as a man who projects a mask of power both have become tied to their masks and fear letting them go, yet in the darkness we can discover a hidden light of authenticity that can be rekindled back to life to live our life).

@stevesmith783916 күн бұрын
Well said, but to attribute the quality of performance of self identity to everyone denies that there are any authentic people. I would say that everyone playing an absolute performance of a self identity thinks everyone plays an absolute performance of their self identity. People with authentic self identities think others have authentic self identities. Surely, Nietzsche himself is the epitome of all the things that he criticizes. He IS the sickly, vulnerable, insecure, reclusive, overcompensating actor hiding behind a GIANT mustache grasping at relevance by calling out all the other actors. He is like "Wee Willy Winky running through the town, up stairs and down stairs in his night gown. Rapping at the windows, crying through the locks, 'Are all the children in their bed, for now it's eight o'clock?!'" Because the self fulfilling fuel of the identity performance is insecurity, the more insecure a person becomes, the more they act, the more they act the more insecure they become. This gets to my point. The actors regard people with authentic personalities as being pretentious at best, naive suckers in the middle, and the most evil of all deceiving performers at worst. Authenticity is the one thing performers can't stand. On the other end, authentic people will forever be at a loss to understand why everyone else is such an @-soul. Truly, authentic people are by far a minority and will rarely come across other authentic or more authentic people because society hates authenticity and will punish it on every opportunity to insure the lowest level of insecurity for them. Conformity = security. Of course Nietzsche will defend identity performance. Of course he will deny the existence of authenticity. Of course he will call on esoteric forces to explain his self fulfilling world view. Of course he will not tread the ground of all the billions of lives destroyed by people LARPing a performance of their self identity. Every tough guy, every patriotic soldier, every cut throat sociopath, every bully, every capitalist exploiter, every colonizer, every heroic conqueror, every slave owner, every politician, and every deceiving cheater owes a debt of gratitude to Nietzsche. And as far as his claim about how only prey needs camouflage or deception, NOT SO, many predators use camouflage and deception. In fact, deception is by far the most effective strategy in war and biology. It's very possible that everything practicing deception is by some measure at war with something. We just need to find out what. As far as art, dissatisfaction is the mother of creativity. It should not be any wonder why "artists" crave authenticity or look for the authentic expression when they are submerged in a world of deception. Art doesn't happen FOR society (as it is); art happens because of society (as it is). If society wasn't as it is, art would not be necessary. More dissatisfying society = more art.

I think that people hide themselves because they infact - are - really guilty. I am too. That much about guilt. But, also IMHO, what was violently abolished, but is absolutely necessary in a human, and humane, society is - shame, a very foundation of all human culture. P.S. Poor old Nietzsche was absolutely truthfull in this tirade about - himself. 🧠 But, he was deluded that there is no one outside of him to confess his sins, and no Mercy in this world. This is what happened as a result of the actor - based reality. People no longer trusted politicians and so began to regard themselves as being superior to their intellect. They were right about that. To the politicians what mattered was to protect the government. Under a dictatorship or a Kakistocracy people are not allowed to have an authentic self. During the Bush era, they had to identify as someone else. They had to identify as a ´victim of 9 - 11´. This mentality is so effective at manipulation that it scares absolutely everyone into thinking that they must be someone else. During the Covid - era, people had to identify as a victim of a virus less infectious than tuberculosis. During Cleon´s reign, those who opposed him were accused of being conspiracy - theorists. His administration completely disregarded critical thinkers whom he had endorsed officially prior to running for office in his society. When people allow actors to cross ethical boundaries and play politicians, priests, cops, musicians and others they are told are for real, they stop listening to each other and only listen to these people. During the period between 2001 to 2012, absolutely everyone listened to one man. They all wanted to be ´George W. Bush´, and so projected false selves which simply identified as him. For the first time in human history, mankind had been programmed to fear reason instead of embracing it. The situation with false selves reached its climax in 2020, and continued to spread until brave people began to punch individuals for putting up COVID 19 masks, because they had no other choice to do so, not because they were violent. When people are on high as a result of exposure to dope, they are not projecting an authentic self to the outside world, but a false one. The movie Total Recall is very critical of this, as this has been going on since Cleon´s days. In Iceland, and on a number of other islands, they started to elect people who use birth names into office, a revolutionary strategy which will shape the politics of the future. Iceland had learned why people are born to be modelled by the culture of their surroundings, and had thus discovered a very easy and simple escape route from the actor - based reality.

the video offers an interesting exploration of the concept of masks and their role in modern life, drawing on the ideas of several philosophers. however, it oversimplifies some of these ideas, particularly Nietzsche's concepts, and presents a somewhat one-sided view of masks and authenticity. while it raises valid concerns about inauthenticity and fragmentation, it doesn't fully explore the positive functions of masks or the complexities of selfhood.

What a great video. It is my first time viewing and I spent the last hour just digesting and getting information written down. I always thought I was meant to find out "who i truly am" and my "core" yet failed over and over again; simply thought to find out is to try again. But this video completely flipped my perspective; the voice of mine that sought to figure out my "core" was staring into a void wondering why nothing was speaking back. I always struggled to also be one voice, fueled to be only purely Apollonian while disregarding and shutting down anything Dionysian, but now I understand it was not necessarily suppose to be like that, but moreso embracing both aspects, to perhaps allow a multitude of voices to take their rightful place when the spotlight shines on them. To never stick to a singular voice for the sake of "self-discipline" or "order". Like the quote and video said "[Western men] disguises himself with morality because he has become a sick, sickly, crippled animal that has good reasons for being "tame",", and now I recognise I was that sick, sickly crippled man forcing "good reasons" to be "tame".

Each individual performs different _roles_ , not necessarily wear different _masks_ . A role becomes a mask when the individual starts believing in it or is forced to pretend to believe in it (most often the latter) meaning something more than what it means to that person. While the pressure to pretend is very high in the West, not so in the rest of the world. Outside the West, one _can_ be a good spouse _without_ pretending that one's spouse is one's "soul mate", one _can_ be a good parent _without_ feeling responsible for every failing of one's children, one _can_ be good at one's job _without_ claiming that it is what one always dreamed of doing since childhood etc. The need to wear masks to perform a role seems to be a uniquely Western trait. Don't know why, though. It is amusing nevertheless.

The question of an authentic self is actually very simple. There is this "attachment theory", and people with "secure attachments" are those, who have this authentic "true self". So even when they wear masks, they are still themselves. All other styles of attachment are a result of a trauma, usually in childhood. People who were traumatized lost their ability to really bound with others, and thus are emotionally dead. They put on a mask and become it, but there is nothing but a void inside. Those people are not able of real empathy, only of cognitive one. They can cathex images of others in their mind, instead of real person, or not being able to hold images of others when they are not around. Their self-esteem is dependent on evaluation by others, and when it crumbles, it can lead them to their demise. As someone, who cannot really love others, cannot love themselves. Many of those can live their whole live in an addiction to attention by others, confusing it with love. But they do not really love others or themselves, only stuff their are being gratified by those...
