If you want to know the real Jack Aubrey ,take time to read the 21 novels by Patrick O`Brian . As well as showing the life on board and at home, you see a genuine and funny character in his world.

I love the movie, but the closest scene to the books was when he was drunk.

@@aldeng3608 I agree. There is one more scene on the end, when Aubrey realised that French captain tricked him. Movie is amazing in many ways, but captain Aubrey seems to be too austere. "Captain Aubrey was a lion during the battles and a donkey ashore" (In relationships with people) - characterization of Jack Aubrey in the novel.
