Imagine if you missed that shot after a 90s intro lol. I've had similar thoughts recently about this being a litmus test for where Apple is currently at. I feel like since last WWDC with the introduction of the Vision pro we are now seeing the beginning of the era that Cook would have started laying the foundation for a bit over a decade ago. And that everything until now has been about scaling what Jobs had built. I count the Watch as Jobs cos he was working on the early stages of that, and it more fits into that previous tech paradigm. Now we're moving into a new paradigm and they're certainly not as asleep as people thought they were. Unifying their ecosystems and finally fulfilling that concept of the computer that adapts to the user. Side note, pooch joyfully chewing on the puck for 15 mins straight is great haha.

i love this perspective and it will definitely inspire an upcoming video - the idea that we are now firmly seeing the results of the Tim Cook Era reminds me of what i talked about here in relation to the AVP: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5PaaZSAoduojaMsi=1Owl8gvD42euSTrZ Tim has scaled the company and we are seeing efficiencies and synergies that may only be possible at Apple for the time being because of it; pretty astounding overall

@@uncoverage I suppose the next question is; was Cook's Apple simply chasing the major nascent tech trends of the last decade (AI and XR). Or do they have a long term strategy of convergence.

14:29 I’m calling it the clipart area with these ai image styles we have. I think it’s ugly but I bet you that generally there are people who will love this, and those people were going to pull a worse image off google search anyway. Also I loved the magic wand thing for its UI. It really was cool to see how they are showing you what context it’s grabbing and “visualizing” the generation. It provides so much context subconsciously. In 3 years people will call this dated because by then people will understand how AI works broadly but for today it’s a clever and thoughtful design decision.

you’re spot on with this & what you articulate about the “clipart era” changed my mind about how i feel about the feature. as for the magic wand - i *love* that thing. it’s a perfect example of what i’ve been talking about when it comes to context being the key (as you mention), but is applied is a perfectly Apple-y way, right at the moment where you’d be most interested in having AI take over

@@uncoverage yah definitely right in line with your points on affordances and signifiers!

I think it was unavoidable for Apple, they needed to incorporate the image generation features even though it was clearly the typical AI image style. If Apple was a private company, they probably would have waited another year before announcing most of these AI features. This was clearly a little rushed but I think they still out shined the competition and laid out the ground work that leaves them room to grow and build on top of without back tracking and risking too much with new technologies. I love the tight integration, privacy considerations and device level intelligence. It didn’t have the Apple polish we expect, which I understand because well they are a little behind on this particular aspect of AI technology. But Notes app and Calculator app with Math Notes was definitely magical. Apple seams to be using OpenAI technology to fill in the gaps in the services they want to provide with an acceptable quality for their brand. In time I think they will slowly replace it with their own image generation technology and LLMs. Much like they did with Google Maps. I want to note that Siri was perfect in this announcement, no nonsense approach. I’m so glad it’s not giving some creepy over acted HER vibes, at least that’s the impression I’m getting from the announcement so far. Love this channel, and looking forward to more tech meditations this week.

Hardware is harder to fix after it ships, so it creates a culture that needs more discipline and rigor before anything starts production or gets taped out. (yes, technically you can fix some things with firmware, but you can’t change the fundamental hardware specs) Software has the leniency for being patched and updated and improved with each release, so its culture often breeds a ship fast and fix later mentality. I also think software is more expressive and subjective because it’s closer to the human interface.

this is a perfect way of putting it, and i love your explanation of *why* software is more expressive - i’ll have to dive deeper into that :)

Great analysis! I agree that the image gen stuff is a little undercooked, but i wouldnt call it bad! People in the know will prefer higher end diffusion models but for the mums and grandmas the Genmoji will be delighful i think I like your point about moving from CPU to GPU to now NPU as the frontier computing architecture, for me this really feels like a seismic shift in how we interact with our devices, and Apple is the first to do so convincingly...

0:35 This is a Kern Terrier breed, right? I really want to make a playful but small friend who can run fast to keep up with me. 🐕 improvisation speech skills are very impressive. how did you learned speek so smoothly and well thought?

you know, we know she is some kind of terrier, but we were told she is a wire fox terrier/shiba inu mix! thank you so much for the compliments btw! i’ve been publicly speaking for a lot of my life, starting especially in high school, where i was asked to practice my communication often, but i’ve also been making KZbin videos for 15 years now & have also been a public school teacher as well!
