Consciousness is experience itself. We only have the illusion of a conscious self because all of our experience is neurological connected in our brain and results in memories. These collections of experience we're able to recall give us the illusion of a self. But in the end, there is only subjective experience whose experiencer is fundamentally the same in every single living thing. At the very basis, there is only one experiencer / consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. You will experience and have experienced every instance of life. You. Me. Even the smallest organisms. We are instances of the same life, separated by the borders of each of our brains, which naturally only have access to each of our memories, thoughts and sensations.
@eileenpierce12094 жыл бұрын
Link I am sort of understanding what you are explaining. Very close, but still not fully engaged. But I think the key seems to be the manufacture and recall of our memories. Is that true? Many thanks eileen
@DihelsonMendonca3 жыл бұрын
I was just preparing to write that, after some meditation, that in fact, if all of us are this same awareness, or consciousness, we are only one. The individuality only comes from different life experiences, memories, and I'm trying to join Krishnamurti teachings that we are not individuals, the content of our consciousness, like fear, anger, reactions, pleasure, suffering, stress, jealousy, hate, ambitions, are common to all mankind. So, we are not individuals either in the very self ( awareness ), or in the content of our consciousness. Krishnamurti always dazzled me when he says that we are not individuals. The second point I'm trying to bring about: Is the observer that which is observed ? According to K. when you look at a beautiful landscape, you momentarily transfer yourself to the reality you are observing, so, intimately, the observer is the observed.
I would love to see Rupert debate Sam Harris on consciousness. As far as scientists go, I think he is as close to “getting it” as any. And it would be a thrill to watch someone as articulate and intelligent as Rupert change his and potentially others world views (regarding the existence of an outside world made of matter, etc.). I hope someone reads this and makes it happen, it would be like candy for my brain to hear them debate
@chinesetomcruise5 жыл бұрын
You might not be aware of this but Sam Harris expresses the same knowledge of awareness that Rupert speaks of. Both of them believe that consciousness is primary.
@jon30765 жыл бұрын
Hi Brendan, I am actually a huge fan of Sam Harris and his podcast and have heard him speak quite a bit on the issue. I actually typed this comment because I had just finished listening to his podcast with his wife on her new book “conscious”. I am under the impression that he sees the self and free will as fundamental illusions, but just misses the final step in seeing that consciousness is fundamental, rather than a product of matter. He would label Ruperts work (or so I believe anyway) in the category of either pan-psychism or new age and pseudo-scientific. However, I believe that he is open minded and just hasn’t spoken to someone like Rupert, who is without a doubt the clearest and most eloquent speaker I have ever heard regarding these matters. I think meetings behind minds like theirs are the only way to bridge the gap between main stream science and philosophy and the non dual understanding.
@chinesetomcruise5 жыл бұрын
@@jon3076 Hi Jonathon, thanks for the reply. It looks like you know a bit more about Harris' opinions on the subject than I do. I also listen to his podcast but haven't heard the newest episode yet. That surprises me that he believes conciousness to be a product of matter. The lessons in his Waking Up app (which I reccomend) led me to assume otherwise. I would also genuinely love to hear a conversation between the two. Intellectually honest and curious individuals seem to be a rarity these days, particularly any with a scientific background. Unfortunately I doubt it will happen as both are very busy and move in related but very different circles, I would think.
@jon30765 жыл бұрын
Brendan, couldn’t agree with you more on everything you have stated above. I believe we are drawn to them for the same reason :) . Yes I’ve always been confused on his (Harris) stance, as he admits that there is no self and that it is an illusion and yet still subscribes to the notion that conscious awareness is an object in and of itself. I would be very curious to hear your thoughts after listening to their conversation.

The term 'awareness' nounifies an activity, the activity of that which is being aware of the activity of being aware. When all our objective world of thoughts, perceptions, ideas, predilections, prejudices are all known by consciousness, are a play of consciousness and a product of consciousness; why then do we blame our mind. We should straight jump to the consciousness and tame it into doing the right thing . This, then requires a life long purification process of the consciousness, the way shown to us by Sufis. There is no other short cut or a direct path that can be alternative to the gradual process of cleansing your consciousness of the filters of your nurture.

The consciousness was present in deep sleep. Deep sleep state is not absence of awareness. It is awareness of absence of anything to perceive because there is no mind and sense organs in operation during deep sleep. Only mind is present during dream state and we experience subtle things in our dreams. When senses also join in the waking state we experience gross objects. Rupert, I would be interested to know how somebody so aware (Enlightened) interacts with others in a "messy" world; is ego necessary to stand up for yourself? i.e. setting boundaries, demanding your rights If there's a problem. How do you resolve conflicts with people who are not at your level of awareness?
@jjjos5 жыл бұрын
David K. Yes me too, the integration is the hard part
@GalaxeeCat5 жыл бұрын
Solution: see everyone as yourself.
@jjjos5 жыл бұрын
GalaxeeCat sure thanks, but in practical life it present issues. For instance, a teacher at my son’s school keeps giving him detentions for bad behaviour. The teacher believe is doing the right thing, from his level of awareness he is, but without wanting to sound arrogant he is missing the bigger picture, has no lateral view capability. So, I don’t judge him nor am I angry, but still it’s a problem that is there. I tried to explain calmly the possibility of him being a bit less robust and a little more understanding and compassionate, to look a bit wider or deeper, even if it’s just to get the best result for the teacher. But these sort of interactions are common, and it can become difficult to interact tbh as with increased awareness you become somewhat different to everyone else. So how to deal with that sort of thing? I think the answer is to just go with the flow, stay routed in awareness and act from there, without any ideas of how that should look.
@jjjos5 жыл бұрын
David K. My understanding is that the ego does have to be there to live in the world, but the ego is as clear as possible, as aligned as possible with truth. As such, your practical behaviour is not tainted with bogus ideas and beliefs, the automated conditioned reactions are removed slowly and there remains a light ego that operates in the moment, based on the current situation, without all the baggage, practical. This does not mean you become a mat to be walked over, that would more likely be an identity ‘wimpy mat victim person’, which is the opposite of this. So ‘right action’ should emerge spontaneously without a pre defined ego pattern. Example - If you spill a drink on someone in the pub by mistake you would say ‘sorry mate’ etc, but if they got angry with you, you would not react with anger as such because you are not really angry with them, you understand they are acting out, showing they are not to messed with to their mates etc, you are not personally offended, but still if a danger is present you may find your fist hitting their chin, that would just be the right action. But you wouldn’t go further than necessary in a rage of anger, as you would never actually lose it, you’d be present throughout. So, in my experience, a lot of fear is dissolving, so I’m standing up for myself more actually, not less, it’s just the reasons change, the ‘rights’ or ‘boundaries’ you thought were right or important before change, but the standing up part increases, or more so, any fear of not standing up disappears. cheers, just sharing my thoughts or experiences on this path, I’m not enlightened or anything don’t want to come across as a know it all, but thanks for allowing me to think that through.
@zain40194 жыл бұрын
We must allow others to be; it is their journey. We can give others pointers and help them along, but it is their path to walk. People change when they are ready to change, and no sooner. We can plant seeds in others, but they must be grown by the host. In terms of setting boundaries and resolving conflict, the pillars of our action must come from two foundations: compassion and forgiveness. Compassion arises naturally as a consequence of resting in awareness. We derive an ever-lasting well of joy, peace and love from the eternal, infinite and ever-present nature of awareness. Compassion does not simply mean serving others, but rising to defend others and ourselves as well, when needed and appropriate. This continues on into the second piece: forgiveness as the fragrance of our soul. We are all human and we all err. We all act based on our level of consciousness. We deserve compassion for the life we are living, for in each moment, it is the only life we know how to live. Forgiveness simply means allowing love to be extended across all barriers, across all present moments, to all people. If we live in free-flowing compassion and an innate forgiveness, we're able to create a basis for action that is kind and gentle, intelligent and adaptable.

Marie. It is not about understanding. Understanding is thought. Clear seeing is needed. Rupert is pointing us to our quintessential nature - awareness or BEING. We confused who we are right now thinking we are a mind and body and identifying ourselves with thoughts and feelings. When we notice that in fact thoughts, feelings, perceptions and sensations simply come and go within and of the awareness, and recognise that we immutable awareness that is beyond death, damage or change, we wake up and find freedom. Our suffering comes to an end. For most people, this is a gradual process. When you see clearly who you are, you stop grasping at the mind and body and a beautiful unravelling starts to take place. Suffering reduces and reduces and reduces and at some stage comes to an end. In Rupert's book Presence 1 he breaks down this discovery into stages: recognising ourselves as the subject knowing objects, recognising ourselves as awareness as the container and knower of experience (everything happens within us) and recognising ourselves as inseparable to all that appears within ourselves as awareness (everything is made of awareness - and hence we discover love, God). By meditating and contemplating these stages, we gradually (or sometimes quickly) awaken from the dream of duality.

Marie AILLAUD awareness has no preferences. It is only aware. You want to change the clouds in the sky (that is your preference), thus you cannot know the preference-less awareness of awareness. What you need to do is simply be aware of the clouds and realize that you wanting them to change is just another manifestation in the ever-present awareness. Be aware of that manifestation too. Only then you can tap into that which never changes, and you’ll realize that the sky is not bothered by neither rain nor clouds.
