Girl! I’m not even into watercolors, but you drew me in with this video. I am an acrylic artist and this video popped up on my feed and all I saw was Paintcrush so I jumped in. I thought I’d see who you were as I am always looking for new inspiration. I have subscribed to your channel because your personality is so intoxicating. Who knows, watercolors could be in my future. I’ll be watching some of your past videos.

I Just set up my first tin with all large pans filled with Daniel Smith colors. I’m switching out a card that I will save in the tin so I can easily see what the color look like on the paper to help me choose which one I want to use when it come time to start painting. This is been a long process of swatching all the colors from DANIEL SMITH and weeding it down to my first 16 colors. Now only 14 large pants fit in those tin so I’ll use a couple half pans for other colors I might add. As for your question about my favorite colors in your video, it is the two blues right before your favorite green. Thank you for doing these videos I love following you.

Kristy I love this channel! I know you encourage us to buy the best paints we can afford but I am so constrained for space that I have purchased the round stackable Kohinoor set of 36 and for my purpose (whimsical greeting cards for hospitalized children ) they take very little space and they work well! I do fill the empty spaces in the middle with various tube colors that I fall in love with. just FYI. Love, your fan from Virginia Beach

Just a hint. Paints today are all pretty much the same. Most are manufactured all at the same white label factory. Which means, use what you like and be happy. I was and occasionally, if they were a great customer or I liked them, still am a commission artist in oils, charcoal and watercolor. Once I hit my 60s I started to slow down a bit. Arthritis and a stroke will do that to a person. Although; historically I would have agreed with the lady, today's market isn't what it used to be. It all changed in the 90s with the horrible trade act. Giving ownership of research and development to China in exchange for inexpensive labor. China didn't have a minimum wage therefore their standard of living remained low. Meaning people could choose where to work based on their financial needs. Unlike Americans whose wilful ignorance priced themselves right out of a job. Anyway, because of this r&d ownership all China had to do was wait for a company to ask China to manufacture their products for them. You know, like Winsor and Newton, Parker and Sennelier did. Which meant China owned the formula and could now white label professional level paints at a fraction of the price. So, before the 90s I would have agreed with the lady. Buy the best you can afford. Now, often the craziest are the exact same as the most expensive they are just labeled differently. The only place I suggest no one ever skimp is the paper. A real artist can paint a masterpiece on anything with anything, but one doesn't become a master by fighting bad paper. If still stay away from watercolors designed for the Eastern market. Such as Japanese watercolors. Because they aren't designed to be used in watercolor paper. They aren't designed to be used the way western painters paint. They are designed for rice and mulberry papers and designed for one stroke one pass painting. Not that these paints like gansi tambi or whatever aren't cute they just aren't meant to be used the same way western artists paint. Also you'll find wilfully ignorant imbeciles in the USA & England will carry on about toxins in paint. They'll not want cobalt, cadmium, titanium etc in their paints. Even though they all exist in their baby foods and organic foods multiple the concentrations and they sure don't put that spoon down. So you'll find those paints created for willful ignorance cost more than they are worth and have added brightness which makes painting look unnatural. Also you'll notice paints from Germany, Ukraine, Poland, etc include sepia in place of umber or Paynes grey. Why? Because those paints are designed foartists whom plein air and or are academic painters. They paint for artists whom want their work to match what they see. Not for the "modernist" bunch. So, depending on what you'll be painting you may want a paint from Germany, Italy or France (natural, lifelike, academic) or from England, USA, Korea (bright, bold, modernist). Or better yet, get a mid tone yellow, cyan, magenta and umber in a top quality and mix ever darm color you could ever want or need at factions of the price.

Funny enough, W&N is the only brand I've never been tempted to try. One of the brands where tubes and pans contain absolutely the same mixture is Schmincke. It does not matter what format you buy, it's always the same and always interchangeable. And just a little tip for those who use plastic boxes instead of metal tins: Pans can be held in place by using small, flat pieces of blu-tack or the like. And it's easy to get them out of the box if necessary.

I'm working with a new palette right now, that I just put together, and you're cracking me up. You sound just like me when it comes to color. As a knitter, my local shop had over two hundred different colors of yarn hanging on the wall and I would laugh because even with all that, sometimes the right color wasn't there. But with watercolor, I can mix and fix. Heeheehee.

So I do think there is something to that winsor and newton guideline. Some of my first professional colors were winsor and newton, and they traveled with, were used everyday, they were wet and rewet, and dried, and they were subjected to A LOT of abuse. And eventually I moved on to another brand, and another pallete. What I found is that my WN shriveled into a crispy gross looking jagged pebble, that was really difficult to work with or rewet. So I soaked them in hot water, dumped the weird crispy pigment onto a glass slab, added honey and a micro dot of glycerin, along with smidge of gum arabic. I re-mulled them, poured it back into the pan, and they are fine now. But it was a lot of work to save them and If I didn't have the supplies to save them as I did, it would not have been worth it.
@tradingpostfarms

So, you probably could add honey, or clove oil, and maybe glycerin from the beginning, but back then I couldn't afford to experiment on my precious limited supply.

As for the Winsor and Newton professional, I also use the tubes for filling pans, and I have never had any problems, not even with the colors than can be a little harder to rewet like cobalts. Some of their colors I bought in tubes, some of their colors I bought in pans, and they are both just fine. And no, I cannot think of another brand right now that discourages using their tubes to fill pans. I can, however, think of paints where I discourage people from filling their pans: anything with a lot of honey, like Sennelier. It is of course a matter of personal preference, but I do not like it when paints remain permanently soft and sticky, it is basically begging for contamination with dust and cat fur.

@@christinewilde110 Yes, that is something that I thought as well: Maybe they are discouraging people from filling their own pans because this tends to be a less costly method than painting straight from the tube or buying pre-filled pans.
@justacatwhocantype

@@nmhrunner The size of what one paints really doesn't make a difference when it comes to potentially wasting paint though. It's a matter of how much paint one squeezes from the tube, and there really is no reason to assume that people who paint large are better at squeezing out correct amounts than people who paint small. If anything, people who use larger amounts would likely also waste more paint, simply because they need to squeeze out much larger amounts of paint to begin with. One could of course just leave any leftover paint on the palette, let it dry and reactivate it some other time, *but* then that is exactly what W&N discourages. The paint doesn't care whether it dries on a palette or in a pan: Either it reactivates fine on the palette, which would mean that it will also reactivate fine in the pan, or, if it does not reactivate well, Winsor&Newton would have indeed created a formular that encourages paint waste. Based on my personal experience though, as well as the experiences of the majority of everyone else that I have ever heard on this issue, there is no reactivation problem with W&N tube paints. It is very possible that I am incorrect with my assumption that they are *deliberately* trying to milk their customers this way, but if people actually follow W&N's instructions then higher costs will nonetheless be the result.

Those old Holland paints look great, very skin tone-y in the first row. I like the blues and greens too. Sennlier are very gooey compared to DS when you fill them into half pans. I'm thinking of expanding my Schmincke. As of right now I have the Akademie (student) set and their full range dot cards only. That is also a great way to test watercolors. Purchase dot cards first and then buy the colors you actually like or want from that brand.

I love your videos and advice. I was wanting to make a 1/2 pan pallet like you do. I was looking on Amazon for half pans and I came across tins that come with the empty 1/2 pans and sticky back magnet squares to put on the outside of the bottom of the pans. Since I don't have any vintage tins like you have I ordered. These sets hold 40 1/2 pans but I have more colors than 40 (mixed brands) so I bought 2 sets. It was fun writing on the pans and filling with paint. One tin that I got has blues and greens in the artwork printed on it and the other one has pinks, oranges and yellows. Yes, I split up the colors in the tins to match the outsides. I also swatched the colors on watercolor paper that I wrote on, cut to the same size as a 1/2 pan, put a sticky magnet on the back and stuck to the inside of the tin lid. I took a picture of them but couldn't find a way to post it with this. If anyone else doesn't have tins to use I will put the Amazon link here. smile.amazon.com/dp/B08PNR7F1J?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1#:~:text=Submit-,40Pcs%20Empty%20Half%20Pans%20with%20Magnetic%20Stripe%20Watercolor%20Paint%20Travel%20Tin%20Palette%20Case%2C%20Artist%20Paints%20Half%20Pan%20Kits%20for%20DIY%20Watercolor%20Oils%20or%20Acrylics%20Painting,-Art%20Drawing%20Wheat Thank you, Kristy for your fun and very inspirational videos.

(I probably should read directions more 🤦🏼‍♀️…) but I’ve found another tube paint that has a recommendation to use right out of the tube, and I’ve done both - out of the tube and allowed to cure, and either way is pure magic. It’s the Super Vision paints that are super granular and usually dry showing a couple of different pigments, much like Daniel Smith Moonglow or Serpentine Genuine. I ordered some of the Super Vision glitter colors for my mandalas and leaves, so I’m not sure how well those will cure but I’m excited to try them either way! WN tubes have different formulas than their pan (unlike other brands) and don’t rewet as easily. Add drop glycerine when you squeeze WN tube into palette-or just buy Daniel Smith /M Graham tubes and almost never worry about rewetting (few exceptions). NB: M Graham has one (cobalt teal?) tube which never sets up and can’t be put in travel set(will run). NB2: your humidity can effect things.

i have zero issue resetting my winsor newtons, i live in the desert where its super dry too. i barely have to touch the dry paint with my damp brush and it leaps onto my brush. i use synthetic squirrel and goat hair brushes so maybe this is why? and i definitely notice daniel smiths are the same or slightly slightly less easy...

Could you put the empty half pan onto a metal lid/ palette so that when you put the magnet in it will stay in place while you fill the half pan? Having said that… on Monday I forgot to label the pan first and managed to stick my finger into the fresh paint when I tried to label it!

@@KristyRice it wouldn’t even need to be one of your paint palettes, a metal baking tray could be used instead. This would keep the magnet from wiggling as you add the paint 😘

@@KristyRice Hi Kristy! Hope you are doing well! So am I seeing this right- you are putting your magnet inside the half pan and putting pain on top of it?? Never saw that or thought of that but cursed magnets that won't stay put on the bottoms of half pans!😂 What a fabulous idea to put them in the pan. And it doesn't mess the WC up? Thanks!!♥️😍♥️

I have new paints i will be putting into palettes this weekend. i started writing the names on the plastic half pans with a fine sharpie after I watched a previous video of yours. For some reason the names are getting rubbed off. Is there a specific sharpie you are using?

i have had this problem , it seems like some pans are so smooth that no matter what i tried to write with it will rub off! i think I'm going to have to put a sticker or piece of tape on those ones and write on that.

Kristy, I need help. 😬😬 I’ve been building my romance with watercolor for the last few months, doing a bunch of research and watching so many videos. I’ve worked with acrylic and oil all my life but I’ve wanted something new to add. After finally narrowing down the brand I wanted to start with I ordered some tubes, half pans and a tin. I followed all the advice, named the pans with brand and color, kept them all apart, made sure the magnet is in the middle and I took a toothpick and swirled them around so the paint was well combined and perfectly smooth on top. 50 colors and 4.5 hours later I had this beautiful rainbow of perfectly filled smooth half pans. I let them sit over night and all of today. I came into my studio ready to put my my perfect half pans into the tin and they all have craters in them, they look like they are half empty now. Is this supposed to happen? I know the water had to evaporate out but I’ve seen some artists fill their pans in angles and they look perfectly smooth and in that same angle when dry. So i’m just so confused. Thank you for your time.

What brand of paint did you choose? The amount of shrinkage can def vary. Many will add another layer or two of paint after the first layer cures, to build up to a truly full pan…

@@KristyRice WOW! When you say you reply to everyone you are not joking. I thought since this was an older video I may have to find your email on your website or something. Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly!!! Good to know that I didn’t do anything wrong and that I just have to do a second layer. It’ll be a lot easier this time with all the prep work done already. I went with Gen Crafts after watching your best Amazon sets video. I price checked everything and then I ended up getting a deal where I got the 48 color palette + 15 page watercolor paper pad AND their 50 paint tube set $36. None of the other brands could beat that so I thought it would be a great way to dip my toes in to both the pre-made pallet and tubes and would give me more than enough paint to really practice without being precious about any of my supplies.

Hi Kristy - Got your Free-Spirited Watercolor book and really enjoying it! I have a bunch of empty full pans so I'm wondering if I could use those for a palette and not fill to the top or is there a reason for filling all the way? Thank you!
@KristyRice
@KristyRice Жыл бұрын
I can’t think of a reason you must fill to the top. I rarely do. Only point would be to be careful of picking up color from them with larger brushes. Don’t go digging and damage your brush. Just make sure the pan is sprayed and brush is damp. It will soak up color from the pan easily then :)

@@KristyRice Most jellyroll pans would attract a magnet.... You could flip it over if you dont like the raised edge. Take a magnet to the kitchen supply or lumberyard and find something the magnet sticks to well.
