My wife and I just switched from the ketogenetic diet to the Mediterranean diet. After years of keto and losing over 25 lbs, we felt as if we were missing out on a lot of food we weren't able to eat. Let me tell you, not only have I escaped my plateu but I can honestly say that I've never been so satisfied in my life. The food we eat now is so much more healthier and tastier than I could have ever imagined. Thanks for your vids, it have been transformative!

Low carb with high unsaturated fats like the Mediterranean food and moderate protein. Mixing the two has benefits i believe especially for short term but for long term i'll go with Mediterranean woe.

The problem with eating the way I did in Greece in the USA is that I’m not doing the same stuff I did in Greece, which was walking miles up and down a mountain all day and swimming in the ocean, collecting horta with my yiayia. Here in America we don’t have to work very hard for our next meal, hence why they came to live in NYC.

One year ago I told myself I needed to be more careful what I was eating. I love this video!! The mediterranean diet is incredible. I believe that once you start eating multiple servings of vegetables and fruits every day, you can never image living another way. I swear olive oil is magical - my grandpa has always consumed an enormous amount every day (he's from Italy)...he's 95 & has always been incredibly full of energy :) We definitely shouldn't be afraid of healthy fats!
@itsmeleenie6 ай бұрын
I spent some time in Sicily and the cuisine was out of this world. I didn't have any kind of meat for the duration of my time there. Actually, I didn't even realize it until I came back to the USA. I ate A LOT, probably more than I eat here in the States. I've tried following the Mediterranean diet a couple of times, and I always got bored of it or got frustrated with it. I realize now that the problem is that the idea of "dieting" (at least here in the USA), is really focused on restricting yourself. Every time I tried a diet, I restricted myself and stopped myself from enjoying certain foods simply because they are labeled "bad." This video reminded me of my experience in Italy. I didn't have to restrict myself, and I never once thought about certain foods being bad. I ate pasta, bread, lots of cheese, and lots of olive oil. Sure, 95% of what I ate was made from vegetables and fruit. But still, I never felt like I was dieting or restricting myself. I was my healthiest during my time there. I also realize that living in the USA, especially in my city, makes being healthy difficult. You are so consumed with work and the stress of this economy. I wish there were more green spaces in my city, and wish I actually felt safe enough to walk by myself as a young woman. In Sicily, I felt safe and comfortable. I felt motivated to walk and be active, probably because the culture is a very active one. People are always moving, people are always out and about. People enjoy the landscape, the food, the cultural festivals. I'm not saying this is impossible in the USA. Of course you can be healthy, lots of people are. However, it's not the same for all of us. Some of us really need motivation, not from people, but from our environments.

In revisiting this article after several months, it occurs to me that the magic of this diet is that it is mostly whole, fresh foods. Emphasis on fresh salads, vegetables, certain fruits, whole grains, etc. can keep us off the chemical-laden roller coaster. I have not been able to handle large amounts of oil due to gall bladder complaints, but I use it in smaller amounts, with a whole foods diet. I seem to be eating less, have fewer issues with appetite, and love the meals. I either use olive oil or ghee on my vegetables and potatoes, which makes each meal a gourmet experience.

Using more olive oil in my salad, on whole grain organic bread, and on cooked vegetables has curbed my appetite noticeably. Not only do I not want as much food at the meal even if I start out hungry, but I don't get particularly hungry between meals. On the first two days of trying out the extra oil thing, I noticed some complaining from my gall bladder area, which radiated around to my back. I knew what it was, as gall bladder pain has not been a stranger to me for much of my life. Yesterday I wasn't comfortable with the pain. But this morning it is all but gone. I wasn't hungry until noon. I fixed a big salad with all the right things, but had to cut it in half before I even sat down. The rest went in the fridge for dinner. My observation is that added oil seems to satisfy the feeling of being full, and it does it quickly at the beginning of the meal. Still exploring the whole issue.

I’m Spanish and my great grand mother had wine for breakfast (which was normal in the past) since she was a girl, people would have it with bread or biscuits dunked in. She lived to be 98 and she didn’t have dementia or even had any health problems until a few months before her death. A little before her passing the doctor told her she should stop having wine for breakfast and have milk instead, the milk was bad for her stomach and in the end she died just a little after, the cause of death was just her age. Moral of the story is drink your alcohol because if you don’t you WILL die. I’m only joking of course but you know a bit of alcohol ain’t gon kill you🍷

And of course, thank you so much for posting this and giving this explanation of the Mediterranean diet! My doctors are speculating I may have arthritis, but I also have bipolar disorder, severe allergies, asthma, eczema, and have had a [luckily] brief bout of cancer. In other words my body is FULL of inflammatory conditions lol. So even though my diet is not the worst (I don't eat fast food, fried foods, and avoid prepackaged foods as much as possible - but I drink a LOT of milk and not as many fruits and vegetables as I should), I decided it was time for me to REALLY base my diet off of this, not just having similar foods here or there but actually basing my diet off the conceptual structure of the Mediterranean diet itself. So yeah this video was very, very helpful. Thank you so much!!! Also fun fact, my mom is from Spain and drinks one glass of wine every. single. night. And despite like 15 years of chain smoking, I thank the sky every single day that she doesn't have any severe health problems. People joke that it's the wine. XD But she herself has said, "It's not that I drink wine every day. It's that I drink alcohol in moderation. You Americans drink alcohol like it's water, of course it's going to affect you poorly!" So there's my mom's words of wisdom for you. =)
@skontheroad2 жыл бұрын
Your mother is right! Red wine, in moderation, is supposed to be good for your heart! I spent a lot of time in Europe and always notice how there are so many old men sitting around in cafés, smoking (women too, but less so). Especially in the southern European countries. Actually, one only has to walk around countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, etc. and look around and you begin to wonder, "What are we doing wrong?" In addition to food, it is a whole lifestyle, partnered with an outlook on life, that helps them live longer, happier lives. While in America, we never embraced the old world ideals that seem to keep them so happy. The one thing we can do, that should help is to, atleast, mimic their diet! Milk is not a huge part of their diet, btw. Dairy and cheeses are, but nothing processed. I always learned that milk is horrible for one's health, especially if someone suffers from congestion, inflammation and other ailments. Try swaping out milk for vegetables and see how you feel! If you start to feel better, remove dairy altogether for a few weeks and see if it helps. Keep a food journal--it helps!! Good luck!

I think the benefit from moderate alcohol intake is that it basically relaxes the nervous system and lowers stress, stress being one of the biggest causes of hypertension and, by extension, a greater risk of cardiovascular disease. There are studies that show that teetotalers actually have a higher risk of cardiovascular (among other) disease than moderate consumers. Heavy drinkers (at best) basically cancel out any benefits alcohol may offer, however, because then that brings into play other risks, such as liver disease, mouth and other cancers. But since the body can easily metabolise a moderate intake of alcohol, I think the benefits of moderate consumption are evident, along with a healthy diet, especially among those of us who have stressful lives.

This is so interesting because while on keto I noticed I never felt full. So I started taking 2 tablespoons of avocado oil before every meal and cooking with avocado oil instead of butter. I also started incorporating more vegetables and cheese in place of meat. Had no idea I was adopting aspects of the Mediterranean diet. Now that I do, I can honestly say it's the most sustainable diet I've ever been on. I don't count calories or carbs, I just make sure I pair a healthy oil with every meal. If it's something that's not cooked (like a salad), I'll drizzle oil on top or just drink a small amount and wash it down with water (super easy). My grocery list is quite small and affordable as I mainly eat vegetables, eggs, meat, and dairy. The most expensive things in my diet are the oils (I use extra virgin cold pressed avocado and olive oil). My treat is sweetened almond milk with my coffee. I've lost more weight eating like this than eating 20 carbs and under on keto. So for me, it's a lifestyle change. TIP: For anyone interested in trying this diet, make sure you avoid heavily processed seed oils (ex: Canola, Peanut, Sunflower, Corn, Soybean). These oils can actually be toxic to your health if consumed in large quantities. My recommendations are to start with either extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil. But definitely do your own research and make sure the oils you're purchasing are pure and unadulterated. A good brand for avocado oil is Chosen Foods on Amazon.

@@syedaafrin6093 Yes. They vary but I always have spicy chickpeas as my base. I sometimes cook some pasta and mix that with mascarpone and add it to the bowl. Sometimes I steam cauliflower and broccoli and mix it with yogurt and lemon juice and add that to my bowl. I remember being able to have a drink there and I thought it was so cool but more than the alcohol what shocked me was I had a shot of their espresso and this was before starbuck and all the coffee places they had beautiful cafes there with with foods i had never seen before coming from a farm in Wisconsin I was so overwhelmed it seemed like a fairy tale to me and the girls were so different as well they spoke so many languages and I only spoke one. lol Anyhow your show made me think of a lof of things and how food is always at the top of the list for remembering things. It must release some kind of chemical like DMT for it to be so powerful.

You are so kind to share your wisdom and knowledge of this diet with all of your viewers and for that, I thank you. Now, please answer me this- is white rice and white pasta acceptable, or should it be brown rice and whole-wheat pasta? Does it really matter which type?
@Mediterraneanliving2 жыл бұрын
Even though common nutritional knowledge says to eat brown rice and whole wheat pasta, neither is eaten that much in the Mediterranean. Semolina pasta and white rice is typical.

There are some things I'll switch, like Spinach to Beef Liver Make beets the main veggie For meats outside of Fish, I'll continue with beef organs (cheaper) Ribeye occasionally (1-2 a wk or bi-wkly) I mostly eat rice, black beans, Red meat with raw honey, salt, fermented beets & with other veggies Fenugreek & hemp seeds for breakfast usually sometimes adding large servings of natto beans to food or eat it for breakfast mostly apples & oranges for fruit I ferment dairy with L Reuteri & add blueberries & honey Mostly drink water/tea, outside of some juice I like raw milk when I can get it This is outside of the herbs, creatine, etc. I take Unless the work I'm doing will be taxing like this wk doing 8-12hr shifts in 95+ degrees Typically eat one large meal a day after work I looking for a change & research seem to say this diet is great for Mitochondrial health...Mitochondrion health...not sure how to phrase that This seems great though I wanted to learn how to make Ancient Greco-Roman dishes Might as well make the switch

Wine contains resveratrol which has been found to increase lifespan in mice. Historically in those regions, wine has been associated for thousands of years with life and health. Wine helps circulates blood as well. But of course, moderation is key just like everything in life.

1. What the real traditional mediterranian diet is? 2. Asking people about diet 3. Super high fat diet 4. Big amount of vegetables 5. Lot of potatoes and bread 6. Mediteranian diet is traditionally low cost - less meat, more vegetables, pasta 7. Alcohol: some people drink alcohol, some people don’t

Olive Oil. Wasn’t mentioned that the olive oil in US on the grocery shelves is not authentic. How to tell? Put small amount in a glass and into the freezer. If it freezes then it’s authentic.

Thank for the info! I want to point out to folks, that you do not need to eat Greek-style Mediterranean food. The Mediterranean is vast and encompasses many cultures and countries. The Mediterranean region includes countries like Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and parts of the Balkan region like Albania, Croatia, and Montenegro, encompassing diverse cultures including the Spanish, French, Italian, Greek, Levantine (including Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian), Egyptian, Maghrebi (North African), and Ottoman influences; all sharing culinary and cultural similarities due to their proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. So you have so much to choose from! Just choose the traditional diet, not the Western-imported diet. 😅

Bill, I'm genetically Mediterranean, mother is Greek, father Italian. My Greek grandparents lived until late 90s, my Italian grandparents who spent the majority of their lives here, didn't make it past 60, including my father. I need to go back to this diet. I just need help doing it. P.S.... My Greek yia yia would call me "Patatou" little potato because of the number of them she would cook for me.

I just signed up for your 10 week weight loss program. Although I lost 70 pounds with the McDougal starch based diet and have been on it for years, I find zero satisfaction in eating....it's just fuel and nothing more. Dr. McDougal says that the fat you eat, is the fat you wear.....and I am nervous to try eating a Mediterranean diet. Loving what you are eating, while not gaining weight seems like a fairy tale....one I am hoping will have a happy ending.

Greek salad is so tasty even if you skip the feta cheese it’s still fabulous. Ugh,! Onions, bell pepper, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber ! I don’t add olives though. The homemade lemon juice, olive oil, salt and oregano (or basil) dressing is GREAT.

Beans are one of the staples of the Mediterranean diet. Two questions: 1) aside from being in a salad, what other ways are they eaten in the diet? 2) are there types of beans which are not part of the diet? Thanks.
@Mediterraneanliving Жыл бұрын
Beans are eaten in many different forms from soups and casseroles to dips like hummus and even are eaten for breakfast with eggs in certain countries. Any bean, even if it isn't from the Mediterranean has positive health effects.
