A great, very visual comparison backed up by some lovely images. I'm currently running two systems; a Fuji X-pro2 plus XF lenses and a GFX50R with the Fuji 35-70 and a handful of adapted Mamiya and Canon EF lenses. I use the GFX for "set piece" planned shoots (I have clients in the land management and tourism industries) and the X-pro for more travel and as my walk-around. I'd thought of ditching the GFX and X-pro for the new 40MP X-T5 but your comparison is giving me pause for thought. There's something about the roll-off of the highlights on the GFX, even when compared to the Sony. With the outdoor shots of the model it was almost like you'd put a soft box on the sun. There was less harshness between the shadows and highlights. For me this is the definable difference that the MF camera gives, and it's important to me as a landscape and outdoor shooter where I have less control over the light. (Sure is bulky compared to the X-pro though!)

Thanks for the vid. I used the Sony A9 which was great for fast action. But I missed the colour profiles of the Fuji system so much. I took the plunge and purchased a second hand GFX 50s end of last year. Yes the autofocus is slow but it hits focus 98% of the time. I always knew that my passion was portraiture photography so with that I made my decision to move to this system. Thanks once again for your Vid.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been toying with getting the GFX 50Sii (used) and have some good Mamiya glass. I usually shoot film and have an older APS-C DSLR. But then I was playing with an A7Riv the other day - man, it has so many bells and whistles. And the new A7Rv - I actually heard a reviewer say that it’s “insect” AF setting didn’t quite focus on the eyes! That just made me question my sanity. You hit it the right point though - does the camera inspire you to go out and shoot pictures? The Sony is a great camera, but I think I would wake up every morning wanting to go out with the GFX, regardless of autofocus, megapixels, or bells and whistles. Cheers!

You’re absolutely right! Despit the shortcomings, the output is unmatched. I ended up buying the GFX 50R

Like most things, start with your end use. If you never print, and just post to Insta/KZbin, then Medium format is overkill. If you do print, or exhibit, then go for it, the difference really shines.

Is that right though, there a distinct look you get with the GFX?
@GregCarrick11 ай бұрын
@@ChrisEdgecombePhoto I think it has more to do with the lenses. When I use the Fujifilm GF glass, the images are amazing. When I use adapted vintage glass, not so much.

If you never print, and just post to insta/youtube, then full frame is overkill. Micro 4/3 is most fitting for social media.

I shoot both, a Hasselblad H2D-39 a Fuji GX680 with a digital back and their full frame counterparts Canon 5Dc and a 5DMk2. Depending on what I need I‘m gonna shoot medium format, but just for things like DOF full frame is quite a bit better suited if you own lenses like a 50mm f.0.95 or a 24mm 1.4. I‘m pretty much happy with both.

Loved the video and great shots, you've hit the nail on the head; if your photography requires the need for fast auto focus, high burst rate and endless buffer then full frame or even crop sensor is a must have, but if all that speed and performance isn't necessary for your style of photography the benefits of medium format becomes a comprise free option.

I recently got a GFX 50sii with 50mm and 35-70..Those are the two cheapest lenses but I have been quite pleased with the results so far. The IQ is fantastic. I am trying to get my hands on a few extra lenses. Hopefully the 20-35 and 110. I have adapted several Canon EF and Nikkor F mount lenses. The Canon 70-200 f4 , the first white model, is really good with my Techart adapter with just a hint of vignetting in the corners although even at 200mm. Wider than that it is quite pronounced.The AF works well enough on static subjects. My 60mm nikkor macro D is great as it doesn't vignette but manual focus only. My nikon 70_200 G is hardly usable on the GFX native size but works better on the 35mm Crop mode. Still not very sharp in the corners until f8-16. EF 24-105 is not usable on the GFX native size, The 17-40 and 16-35 EF lenses are not usable until about 20mm on the GFX native size but the corners are really bad even stopped down. My Nikkor 105mm 2.8 macro works well. The Nikkor G24-70 is no good. My old 50-300 nikkor ais f 4.5 is no good. Vignettes like crazy. I had high hopes for it. Oh well. My 17-35mm 2.8 nikkor AFS works the same as the 17-40 EF. Ok at 20mm or more but bad corner sharpness in the GFX native crop. From what I can gather is it's a bit of a lottery as to what will adapt. I'm not surprised though as the 35mm lenses are not made for large sensors and some lenses wont because the design at the rear of the lens. The rear element is too far back and the body of the lens is blocking the image circle. These 35mm lenses can be cropped and you still benefit from the cameras great dynamic range and colour science etc but dont expect miracles. I think 645 lenses etc are the go but they can be slow and the old technology will show up but who knows. For a few bucks it might be worth a play. I would'nt go and get a GFX camera hoping that your full frame glass will make the move across, you will be dissapointed so why not have two systems or more. I have. My full frame stuff for macro and nature etc and the GFX for a more carefully thought out slower approach.

Great expose...By the way, I am born in Toronto, but have been based in Paris for years now. I own a couple of GFX50s's and seven of their fabulous lenses...the 45, 63, 80, 110, 120, 250 and 32-64 and they are all spectacular. Still on the fence regarding getting the 50S ll or 100S. I love the rendering of the 51.4 MP sensor and pixel pitch. By the way, your model is very pretty indeed.

Thanks for watching! I'm jealous of your lens collection 😅. I wouldn't do the 50S II. Same sensor and focusing. I'd do the 100s and color differences are really just in contrast from what I've seen. Easy to modify in post
@flyingpotato3680 Жыл бұрын
get the 100s if you can much better for your dollar if you investing into the system long term. If what your doing specifically dose not need the better auto focus and the extra 50 megapixels and a bsi sensor then there is no need to spend the extra money and if you fit in that category i would recommend the 50sII its the perfect camera for a cheap digital mirrorless medium format camera also i would recomend people getting the 50mm 3.5 lens for the 50sII and for the 100s for there first gfx lens it might be the cheapest lens but the quality matches and even in alot of cases beats most full frame 40mm 2.8 lenses

My first ever camera was a 6x6 Pentacon Six TL that my dad gave me. I'm in the medium format church ever since 😅 Though with digital cameras was never convinced, until Fuji. I'm about to pull the trigger and get either GFX50R (used most likely, as I don't see old stock sold anywhere for a reasonable price) or GFX 50S II, given that it's at a discount right now. Still second guessing myself if MF digital is a right choice or should I go with Z6 or Z7 instead. Contrast autofocus is annoying, and these cameras+lenses are substantially heavier to carry around, but these images are so much better! Thanks for a great video, I have less doubt now :)

I’m glad I could help. Thanks for watching. I had the same dilemma and I went with GFX50r as the 50sII has the exact same sensor and focusing. Rather use the extra cash for native lenses and I’ve been happy with the choice

@@TonyCaptures nice 🖤I’ve just bought the 50s ii last night, and the 50/3.5. So far super impressed! It’s also almost exactly the same focal length as my all time favourite Fuji ga645i had, I’ve parted ways with that camera in 2021, but it’s still my favourite. Now I feel like I can get same results but in digital!

In my case all used 50r were at around 2500€, which is just 700€ away from a brand new 50s ii right now, so I decided to cover the gap. If I found 50r for 2000€, I’d get it

After seeing all the comparisons I thought you were going to say full frame is fine and it's not worth MF prices. Glad to hear I had the same conclusion as you though, the first time I saw the MF images on the computer, I'm thinking I can never go back. The holiday rebates got me, haha. Such good image quality though. I've been looking for sharpness and image quality my whole 27 years of photography, and now I've got so much, I don't know what to do with it all.

Been playing with GFX50 S II with my A7RIV and Z9 side by side for a while, to me is huge exaggeration about those "Medium Format look" claim, you really have to put two side by side and have to really looking for those difference to see it, in order to gain those IQ improvement, I have to give up so much in AF tracking, speed, and ergonomic, it doesn't matter how good the sensor is if I can't get it focus properly, it's not just frustrate but painful shooting the GFX50S II side by side with my Z9 and A7R IV, and the A7RIV even has a out dated AF system already but still gives me more reliable AF than the GFX, to my own experience the GFX 50S II is still a generation behind my D850 in term of AF. also a lot of people rave about the Shallow DOF control of Medium format, really? FF has 35-50-85 F1.2 and 135 F1.8 lenses and the fastest Fuji lens is F1.7, what Shallow DOF control?? The only thing I see in MF is the DR improvement over my FF, but I have hardly exhaust the DR/Noise capabilities of the FF so in order to be able to take advantage of this once in a blue moon I will have to I struggle to get quick reliable on every shot and have to review every picture I took on the spot to make sure it's in fact in focus.

Once you experience those organic Fuji MF files, it’s so hard to go back to FF unless you need the focus speed. Purchased a Gfx 50r in June this year and I only use my R5 now for fast action or when I need a long zoom. KZbin videos don’t do the GFX files justice.
