Back in the late 70's/80's as an avid SWL and MW/am band dxer, i made a 1mtr Loop with tuning capacitor i would stay up after 11pm when it was dark in the Winter to tune and eck out USA stations from my central UK location, 930, 1010 and other frequencies which i cant recall :( as well stations from Canada and south America. Happy days as a teenager, now the AM/MW band is just noise due to various electrical stuff same for lower HF bands, 80,40 mtrs. de g0sgo.

That Sony walkman that you showed was actually a pretty damn good AM reciever for it's very small size. It was my mainstay radio back in my vagabond days when I had no money and slept in the woods. Absolutely a great video. Here where I'm at currently in southern Mexico, I'm unfortunately in an apartment in the center of the city where the electrical and internet wifi buzz and interference keeps me from doing any serious AM or SW DXing either day or night. I even tried going to several parks here in the city to DX in the daytime, but that constant electrical buzz was there no matter where I went. So I had to take my tent and a taxi to a remote mountain about 10 km from the city to find a spot in the bush to camp and DX all night. A bit dangerous in today's cartel controlled Mexico, but I survived it. By the way, after extensive studies using a number of radios, I have found that my current CCrane Skywave SSB is THE most sensitive small radio on the market for AM, running it barefoot( without any loop). I even tested it with that Tecsun ( or Countycomm GP5 and GP7) that you showed and the CCrane is slightly more sensitive. I liked your video very much and it is certainly refreshing to see a young man such as yourself so interested in AM DXing. The city where I'm at presently has close to a 100,000 inhabitants and not a single AM station. Unfortunately, AM radio is almost dead here in Mexico, except for the quantity of stations in Mexico City. But the good side of that is that english language US stations now have more open frequencies to penetrate deep into Mexico.

Wow, this vid brought back memories! Back in the early 1960s I had an 8 transistor radio with a ferrite rod about 6 inches long. Standing in my backyard in Sydney, Australia, I still remember after 60 or so years, I heard KDKA and WOWO! Then I used to sometimes listen to KGMB who had a teeter-totter contest going. I received a QSL card from Radio Caroline telling me I was their most distant listener. All up I QSLd 71 countries in those days but the cards later went missing in a house move. In fact I got so into it that in 1965 I started the Australian Radio DX Club which is still going. In a couple of months my wife and I will be going on another long trip through the Australian outback (remember our QSO on 20 metres mid last year, portable to portable, vertical to vertical?) so now I will be sure to pack my Tecsun PL660 and my loop antenna for some MW DX. 73 de VK4BOB

Mediumwave DX is how I started my radio hobby when I was a kid (also early 1970s). I purchased one of these exact antennas a few years back. I've used these for years, and found they're very dependent upon which radio is used. Some radios are almost deaf, while others will jump to life depending on the frequency. You just tapped my roots Walt! 1980 - WPE6GGM (Popular Electronics "DX Listening" by Glenn Hauser) I made a 2ft long ferrite rod antenna with a litz wire coil and an active circuit. It had an aluminum "U" channel covering it for electromagnetic shielding. It also tilted which was of benefit when trying to improve some signals. My farthest AM station I ever heard was during greyline in Huntington Beach to the Voice of Maldives on 1449 kHz. Finally got licensed in 1982. Keep up the great work Walt! 73 - KF6IF

great vid, lots of great DX tips...I DIY'd my own external loop antenna using an AM loop that came with and old stereo receiver & a variable capacitor. Also for beginners: choose a frequency that's not already occupied by a local station & then monitor at the top of the hour when they give their ID/call-sign. 73

i found a method to get even more out of that Tecsun loop: attach a MLA-30 (or similiar) Magnetic loop antenna to the radio and place the AN200 close to the loop. It will increase reception massivly and most of the static will be gone. Using that method i can get almost all of the british MW stations here in germany if the weather conditions are good. I still have to do more testing, but it seems to do more than just boost the signal from the AN200. Certainly gets rid of a lot of the static noice. Signals are much cleaning compared to using either antenna by itself. cheers

Has anyone had good luck using these antennas with a Ccrane EP Pro?

This is all a scam and that loop antenna is not going to pick up any DX unless you plug a real outdoor antenna into it and use it to couple the signal to the radio.
