Medvedev is the most intelligent tennis player that I have ever seen. He is just amazing. Big 3 have all round games and they are just in another league so they are just very clear in their mind how they wanna innovate their tennis and defeat adversities. Medvedev on the other hand just has too many limitations and still he wins by outsmarting the opponents. It’s literally the game of chess against him.
@wahn10 Жыл бұрын
100% agree. His brilliance eclipses those limitations. Incredible to watch.
@krishnaramachandran7722 Жыл бұрын
Very true. He also showed younger players like Carlos, how it's done. On Eurosport , Mats Wilander said about the Carlos-Zvarev match" When you play someone who is serving as well as Zvarev, you don't gift them two points starting the match on your serve. You can do that even against Novak or Rafa, as they will give you some break opportunities but against a big server like Zvarev, its curtains". He was alluding to Carlos' lethargic start with his serve. Medvedev on the other hand knew in 3rd and 4th sets that his path to victory is thru' tie breaks and did well to hold his serve. Zvarev loses tie-breaks a lot against the top players and i think it bothers him a little when he can't bank on his serve alone to win a game he needs to win .

Medvedev might win the final . Simply because he has handled pressure many times in grand slams . Plus he is the master in 5 set GS matches and also he has lost AO finals twice before . Sinner will have to play his best , better than he played against djokovoc . Medvedev will throw his racket , yell at his camp , yell at the umpire , take his and djokovic’s trademark bathroom breaks . He will do anything to break sinner’s tempo .

Loved this match and loved Gills analysis. Gill I wonder: Medvedev shows incredible strategic intelligence and instinct during this match. I did not see his coach give him any instructions. It all seems to have rattled and clicked in Daniils own brain, which makes me love him even more as a player. I wonder: for a good year or 2 now I have seen Alcaraz being coached in pretty staggering detail during critical phases of his matches, by Ferrero, his coach. He was absent this tournament. Do you think this played a role in Carlos' fairly shocking tactical decisions abd play against Zverev? And is it fair for a coach to do so much of tge strategic masterminding and problem solving for the player?
@belamcd9878 Жыл бұрын
The Wimbledon final, it was Ferrero 90%, he was meticulously coaching him through that final.
@SJ-di5zu Жыл бұрын
Rules are rules, and coaching is allowed. So it’s not unfair at all, but I think most of us can agree the sport was better off without coaching. Yeah, I think Carlos relies a lot on his coaching. I don’t think he’s very tactical himself. This is something that he will develop over time, and obviously he’s such a great talent regardless, but I do think Ferrero is a big part of his early success. The Zverev loss was terrible tactics from Alcaraz, but he also played awful to be honest. He gave the first set away and never really looked like he was at his best. I don’t think Ferrero could’ve helped with that; Carlos even said in his press conference that he wasn’t feeling the ball at all early in the match and he had no idea what happened.
@wellhello6618 Жыл бұрын

Notice how carlos barely changed his strategy, despite what he was doing (trying to blast through Zverev) not working. he did look at his box but none of the people there were mouthing what he had to do. I know he is an immense tennis talent but I am not so sure he will ever become a strategic light

@@wellhello6618Tactics develop with time. Even Federer had terrible tactics when he was young and even during his prime imo; his main strategy was to be amazing and win. Alcaraz will be fine long term, and like I said, his game was so off against Zverev. I also think Alcaraz can’t really emulate Federer in that regard because his serve isn’t good enough to carry him when his game is off.

THIS is the Meddybear who won our hearts! When did we first see this when he was running on fumes, bandaged and patched up, I'm thinking vs Nadal USO? Was it? Anyway, doesnt matter who the opponent, it was all about Meddy. He was throwing everything and the kitchen sink, first serves on 2nd serves, S&V- all the things he doesnt normally do. But it baffles me, because when he does this, he does do it well, as Gill says, and his volleying has improved considerably, and it is all so much more fun to watch. Tbh, I switched off half way thru 2nd set cos Zverev v Meddy ping pong dotted with sequential aces is just not my kinda tennis. Nor tbh, is Meddy's normal, frankly ugly game. I just come in for the interviews afterwards😁. So why on earth doesnt he save himself and bring this out more often? Sure wear out the opponent a bit first, befuddle and confound him as Mr Octopus but then go in for the kill after a set & a half say, and spare his own body. It's the Meddy Mystery and I love it.

I told you guys not to sleep on Medvedev’s conditioning! I know the 5-set record isn’t great or anything, but just from the eye test, I think it’s clear Medvedev is resilient, durable, and has amazing conditioning. Also important to note that the fresher player does not always win the 5th set. Both of the Nadal losses I thought Medvedev looked a lot less tired in the 5th, whereas Nadal cramped hard at USO2019 and reportedly had nothing in the tank afterwards, and moved very slow at the end of AO2022. Another example would be AO2012 where Nadal looked a lot fresher than Djokovic in that 5th set, but still lost because Djokovic played better first strike tennis and protected his serve. Also I love the return of tactical genius Medvedev. In 2022 and parts of 2023, I felt like Medvedev wasn’t being creative. This year I think he’s gonna change that, and it’ll help him through some tough matchups. He’s made the AO Final through a tough draw, and i don’t even think he played his best tennis for most of this tournament.

Let's be realistic. Meddy has a huge gas tank, but even this tank has to reach its bottom some time. The same story would've been if it was Zverev. If Yannik would not freeze due to the occasion (which I find unlikely given his personality) the title is his.

For me Zverev played great all 4.5 sets up until 2:2 in the fifth where Medvedev’s incredible fight and perseverance at last got to Zverev and he didn’t really choke but more like had a short lapse of focus, missed some easy putaways and from there it was pretty much finished.
@SJ-di5zu Жыл бұрын
When it comes down to it, Gill is right that there’s no clear moment where Zverev choked, but if you’re a top player you have to close that match out. Up 2 sets, having 2 tiebreaks to win the match, you need to put yourself in a winning position at some point. Zverev never really did, and then of course he ran out of gas in the 5th imo.
@ValentinG23 Жыл бұрын
Zverev was 2-1 , 4th set tiebreaker with 2 serves to close the match and Meddy at 5-4 hits a forehand inside out winner , 5-5 he hits a return dropshot off a great serve and the cherry on top at 5-6 he hits an ace to make it 2-2 and then win the match in 5 after being 2-0 down , an absolute epic match and beast player is Meddy 😂😂😂😂

I watched that part of the match, and Zverev’s face was priceless 😂 I just know he was seething at this point. Zverev was already pissed at how Medvedev asked to replay a shot that was called out, and then when Medvedev made that (admittedly lucky) return he just couldn’t believe what happened.

I'm seeing that quote everywhere so I watched that part of the episode. It was after Medvedev lost to Wild at RG, Zverev said "He is one of the best players in the world, so It helps not playing him in the early stage, but at the same time I believe in karma, if you wish bad upon someone, then the bad is gonna come back to you". Is he not saying that it's bad to be happy about Medvedev losing (because it will come back to him)?
@freshname Жыл бұрын
@@stef_v Or maybe he's saying that Medvedev didn't like him and wished him lose, so Seyboth Wild was some sort of karma for Medvedev for not letting Zverev win. It was an ambiguous statement from Sasha. I understand how his words could be seen both ways.

@@stef_vYeah lmao it was a meme thrown around but I think everyone misinterpreted the quote. There is no such thing as LUCK, if you just try, hustle, believe and work hard in what you're doing and not escape to a comfort zone, things will eventually happen. Even if he is tired, Medvedev always makes a one last push on every shot he makes. Always trying, believing and accepting the challenge where some others fade. In the final he has an opponent as composed as he is, so it will come to shot making abilities where Sinner has the edge but Medvedev is the Octopus so it's 50/50. I'd say either Sinner in 3 or Medvedev in 5.

Agree with Gill that this wasn't really a choke by Zverev, Medvedev hit ridiculous drop shot. And 5th set - it wasn't the same Zverev, he gave that set away with 21 unforced errors. He ran out of gas, and yes, Medvedev spent almost the same time on court, but he didn't play prior to AO when Zverev played 2 matches every day for a week in United cup. Maybe next year he shouldn't play so much prior to AO
