This was Devito's favorite role. The studio also let him keep the clothes since he has a lot of problems finding things tailored to his body and I have seen him wear that coat since. He loved it so much he returned to the character a few years ago and wrote this alternate future story for a comic book about him. I admire that devotion to a role. Everyone here really gave it 200% come to think of it.

Danny DeVito ate actual raw fish in this movie because he likes sushi too. Also Michelle Pfeiffer spent three months training with a bullwhip, and the scene where she whips all four mannequin heads off, she did that in one take, the cast and crew gave her a round of applause and the jump rope was her own little improv.

I used to dislike this movie, but after multiple viewings, it grew on me. Something kept me coming back and thinking, "did I really not like this?" and now, depending on the day, I have a hard time figuring out which of the two Burton movies I liked more. Michelle's Catwoman definitely makes the decision much harder. Her descent is just amazing to watch, and her physical work is next level. Anyone willing to put a live bird in their mouth for a scene gets props for dedication. I love her arc in particular, and overall I love Burton's spin on Penguin in this. Thematically, he is very close to his comic counterpart, (heir to the Cobblepot estate, but cast down from high society and turning to crime in order to regain what he believes should be his rightful place) but very different in execution which sets him apart from his origins and paints him more as an homage to Frankenstein's monster, a staple of Tim Burton's style. There's also a bit of Biblical Moses allegory with his backstory: put in a basket to float down river as a child, and the death of the first born plague. And all of the villains are reflections of Batman/Bruce: Shreck, the wealthy corrupt businessman, Penguin, the orphan crime boss, and Catwoman, the costumed anti-hero with traumatic origins struggling with duality. The story to this one is far more subdued and less clear-cut than the original, which might be a knock against it for some, but there are a lot of little details that flesh it out when you notice them. And the plot centers a lot around Gotham's inner-city politics and how the corruption from the rich is filtering down to the rest of the city as Shreck puppeteers officials to his own ends. Very fitting for the setting. Though I do like how they even gave him one redeeming quality in that he cares very much for his own son, Chip, and does everything he does for his sake, underhanded as it is. It even parallel's with Penguin's story, in that his parents threw him away, while Max offers up his own life for his son. "Tragic irony, or poetic justice? You tell me." There's a lot to like here, and I've come around on this movie since my first viewing all those years ago. Guess I'll chalk it up to being too young at the time to appreciate a lot of it.

This movie and the Penguin series have nothing to do with each other, lol. The Penguin series is in Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022) universe, which is currently a standalone universe. It’s only confusing if you try to connect everything to everything. It’s not confusing if you just enjoy each for what it is.

And between that and the Penguin, growing up I got a great lesson that parents don't always know what they're talking about. They're the reason this didn't do as well as the last one and we ended up with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. My respect for adults as a budding teenager took a major hit because of what happened to this series. It's not a perfect movie, but I loved Catwoman's character and the fact that they went dark with the movie. It's Batman, not Superman. I grew up with Return to Oz and Labyrinth. This was nothing. I love my 90s nostalgia, but some parents tried to ruin it every step of the way. My puppy has seen both of the first 2 Batman movies and loved them. He's not traumatized, and I wouldn't show him anything I wouldn't show a human kid.

That’s almost exactly how I interpreted it as well, but I notice she didn’t completely flip out until the machine mentioned the perfume, which gives me the suspicion she, at one point, had ambitions of seducing her boss to further her career in the company to escape her role as the “secretary” everyone took her for. This made me connect that scene as a kind of mental rape scenario for her, which is why she didn’t just destroy her stuffed toys (the symbol of her innocence), she absolutely obliterated them with extreme violence; she deliberately picked a truly cruel way of destroying them (killing her sense of innocence and childlike wonder). For me, this insane and cruel way of “killing” her innocence indicates her loss of innocence wasn’t just bad, it was truly traumatizing and scarred her on a much deeper level. In any case, that one singular scene made this entire movie for me and once again solidified my conviction that Tim Burton is a friggin genius and my favorite director. I have adored this movie since childhood and it was THE movie that made me absolutely love Michelle Pfeiffer.
@bf5250Ай бұрын
Selina’s motive is literally just that she’s utterly pissed off and taking years of misery and abuse out on everything that draws her anger: Schreck for degrading and trying to kill her, Batman for making her feel weak and in need of rescue, the woman getting mugged for reminding her of how vulnerable she used to be. About the only person she doesn’t directly lash out at is Penguin, and she was definitely thinking about it during the speech.

Regarding the toxic waste, I think there's a key line, here: "There's a whole lagoon of this crud in the back." In other words, the water in the penguin enclosure is just plain ol' water; Penguin was planning to sink Max and the kids in another part of his lair - at least, that's how I interpret it. And personally, while I know 'Batman Returns' has some script issues, it's still one of my absolute favorite movies. It's just one of those movies where, if you can get on its wavelength, the experience is like no other - the visuals, the music, the acting, it's all so good! I wouldn't call it a 'turn your brain off' movie, exactly, but it's definitely one that functions more as a sort of dark fairy tale than anything particularly logical - if you watch it like that, it's a very rewarding film, in my opinion.

Oh, Nia, did you not know that Catwoman is a Batman recurring character? Oh, dear. She appeared as early as the first Batman comic book, and has appeared often, so often, since then, in many different yet similar guises. In the 1960s, she was played by three actresses: Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt in the series of "Batman" and by Lee Meriwether in the movie based on the series (Eartha Kitt, with her signature purring voice was just right for the role, and as a woman of color, represented an important step in representation). Always a cool, fun, intelligent, often slippery character, Catwoman is great, by definition.

Tim Burton originally only wanted Catwoman as the main villain in the movie but the studio was adamant that he use the Penguin as they had the opinion that he was the next popular villain after the Joker. Tim wasn't the least bit interested in the Penguin but compromised and put both characters in. He changed the Penguin character drastically from his comicbook counterpart and made him a man/monster.

The Penguin was born Oswald Cobblepot and he was born with some deformities such as his deformed hands that looked like flippers. In the comic book series the back story of the umbrella is that he carries it out of habit because his mother always made him carry one ever since his father died of pneumonia. In the comic books and 1966 TV series The Penguin uses his umbrella as a weapon that fires bullets and poison gas. He also uses it as a parachute to make getaways from skyscraper roofs and as a shield against bullets. Penguin has just as many gadgets as Batman does. He is usually accompanied by birds with Penguins being the one he is most associated with. In the TV series his henchmen were all named after bird species. Catwoman is another one of Batman's arch enemies. Until I watched this movie I had no idea as to the origin of Catwoman. Just as the name implies, she is all about cats and has catlike behaviors. She wears gloves with claws for weapons that at times she coats with various chemicals like poison or some other incapacitating agent. She is quick, nimble and athletic like a cat

This movie for me was all about identity and the conflicts we have within ourselves as we struggle to find our place in this world and within ourselves. That journey can be extremely chaotic especially if you're a broken person. The psychological chaos of the characters and the story structure all work for me on that level. I've been at war with myself for as long as I can remember. I think trying to second guess where the movie might be going could possibly make it feel more confusing. For me it's the kinda film you turn off the analytical side and just see where the story wants to take you. It's definitely expressionist art, a *feeling* movie rather than a thinking one. We either relate to that darkness within or we don't

Your feeling on Batam Returns is the perfect the reason for a tonal swift for the third and fourth movies in this continuity universe. Lol Some people enjoyed Batman Returns for what it was despite just how weird depressing tone it got compared to Batman 1989. Others maybe appreciated it’s existence for spawning a 180 direction that fans also grew up with in later sequels…
@christhornycroft3686Ай бұрын
I like that this is in keeping with a lot of 80s sequels - it went dark. Sadly, it was too dark for some parents with sticks up their asses and it drove Tim Burton from the director's chair and the next film, Batman Forever, directed by Joel Schumacher, was much more of a kid friendly product placement to sell toys with a lot of stupid innuendos, but it at least gave us a great soundtrack. I can't say that about Batman and Robin, the movie that killed superhero movies for a while because it took whatever was done on Forever and put it on steroids and it was literally just a toy commercial with bad one liners. Batman Returns isn't a perfect Batman movie and the ending is a bit strange, even for Batman, but I liked that they got into Catwoman's character and who she was in a serious way and Michelle Pfeiffer was cartoony without being completely unserious. Michael Keaton is still my Batman and Bruce Wayne, and the supporting characters, while a bit over the top, never make we roll my eyes like the next 2 films. The 80s and early 90s were about grossing out or scaring kids, but some wimps went too far and caused this one to not do as well at the box office as the first one. That's why I'm a dog dad and not a human dad. I don't want any of that rubbing off on me. My Cavalier King Charles, Alwyn, has seen the first 2 Batman movies, along with Return to Oz, loved them, and he's 8 months old.

First, an amazing reaction. The way I see it, Penguin was practically the evil take on Moses. Like Moses, he was placed in a basket then placed in the river and founded by a new family. He knew who is parents were, but wanted revenge for being cast out by them and society. The original plan was to kill the current generation firstborn male children, but then he decided to kill everyone when Batman foiled his plot. When he dies, you feel sympathy, because it all started with him having vainful parents. When the cats surround Selina and bite on her, she gets 8 additional lives, signifying her fall out the window the lost of one. She is more of an antihero; she only kills if it is necessary or just. That’s why her and Bruce are similar yet different. They did fall in love, and Bruce attempted to try to calm her. He really wanted to help her recover from the trauma. However, Selina couldn’t reconcile with her chance to not kill Max. She felt like that she already crossed that line between good and evil. That’s why Michelle Pfeiffer is hands down the best Catwoman. Also Michelle did put the bird in her mouth for reals and when she whipped the mannequin heads off, that was done in one take as well. 🦇🐈⬛🐧🖤💜💛

Batman Returns is my favorite live-action Batman (with Batman Forever not far behind). It has such divided tones - black & white, cold & hawt 😳, surface & underground - that it really fits Batman's divided psyche (more on that in the next movie 😉), as well as Catwoman, and also Penguin's 'two-faced' attempt at politics. The interpretations of Penguin and Catwoman really make the movie for me. Penguin is a sewer monster (akin to another Batman rogue Killer Croc) and Catwoman is a revenant (an undead driven by revenge), vastly different from their usual backstories but wildly interesting depictions.

As a man, I've got to say that once Selina Kyle owns her sexual side (as a childless cat woman, so to speak), my toes start to curl. She's found a source of power, and even Batman feels it, but it's chaotic. She affects men, but she "deeply resents" them at the same time. So she's constantly in a push-pull. The more she likes someone, the more the desire to destroy him. And, of course, Max Shrek is her symbol of every way that the patriarchy uses and demeans women, as well the cause of her personal turmoil. The role could NOT have been played any better. And I'd say the same about Danny de Vito. He really revels in being disgusting. Finally, did you get the Biblical parallels? Moses abandoned in the Nile, floating in a reed basket? The death of the first-born sons in Egypt?

Son will argue that part3 was better than 4, but I think they both stink, especially what they did to my hero Arnold Schwarzenegger- put him up against my least favorite actor, George Clooney and made him just say a bunch of lame ice/ cold jokes to destroy his reputation of the best one liners in the action business!
