Seeing Dr. Sturgis struggle with mental problems hits home. My mom struggles with mental illness and I remember seeing her have a nervous breakdown for the first time when I was 7 years old. She didn't want to expose me to a harsh reality at such a young age so instead of talking to me she isolated herself when she felt a breakdown coming on. She has only ever had 3 that I witnessed, but it was heartbreaking each time

Meema learns about John's past prior to this scene in this episode. She begins to worry when John starts weeding goose grass in the middle of the night in the dark and then breaking into the main frame computer lab at work. She then sees written equations in the bathroom, under the toilet seat, and this behavior wasn't normal. It was showing that he was losing his mind (one of the equations he wrote on the bathroom wall was: time + heat + bread = toast). From the "Hello!" to the "You know, neutrinos are interesting, they never bond with anything, they're always alone.", and ending with "It was my dream to win the Nobel, and I'm not going to. I bet Sheldon will." All these lines left me broken for this man, how he also feels alone and will never be recognized for his work in science. Even the background music makes this scene so eerie and sad. Kudos to Wallace Shawn for this role.

Unfortunately this is true for most in academia… and as an academic researcher, this hits hard. All of us being “experts” in our field try our best to be solidified in history, and be remembered as one of the greatest scientist to ever live - to have contributed to a great extent to the human race. But the truth is, there are millions of papers written by academics that lie in the corner of databases that are never even read by anyone. Luckily, I’m not in academia for the glory or prestige - I’m in it to keep learning. I like to pursuit the knowledge and that is what drives me. I couldn’t care less about awards - although I have revived a few despite my early years as an academic
