Madurai itself is no longer what we knew years back. Weve been living outside madurai for 11 yrs now but i still go there since my inlaws are there. I could see the slow decline and neglect the city is going through very slowly but after all these years its very evident everywhere. I cannot live there right now given its condition. The temple has become touristy, yes. Its very tiring plus also an extremely triggering experience for me everytime with the crowd and the badly maintained and looked after state of the temple. I dont go there anymore. My husband does, but he takes someone in his family and goes at 4 or 5am, and even then its crowded with tourists. I truly hate and im sad for what Madurai has become. Gone are the days when the locals were able to get even 2 darshans everyday just by walking in and out in minutes.

Yes very true. Madurai has been neglected for decades and it shows. Can't even breathe walking outside, the sandy dust engulfs our lungs. Hopefully it changes soon.
