I had 32 white rats. Bought two a few months before the pandemic. One got pregnant, the pet stores shut down.. so I raised them for three years. Bought a ferret cage and just enjoyed my rat farm. They were feeders and died for every health reason under the sun. Still had a better life then becoming snake poo

I got 4x sisters (5 months old) • Stripey • Patch • Ziggy • Dot Named due to markings Only Stripey was a little cage aggressive at start as she had eye infection which needed Vet treatment which stressed her out big time... she was in a mood with myself for 2 weeks as I had to handle her during treatment and she wasn't happy at all afterwards whenever she seen/ smelled my hand scent when entering cage. All Rats are amazing and easily handled now. My 10yr old girl loves when the girls lick her fingers clean of food lol. I free roam the girls 12hrs per day... I keep cage doors open all the time and only closed when at work. I leave doors open when I sleep to give girls as much free roam time as possible.

@toff1568 Жыл бұрын
@@potatoesalad4629 Hey, I’m sorry to say this, but you need to keep at least two rats TOGETHER. In my country three together is actually the minimum. Keeping them in separate cages will make it so they can’t cuddle or groom each other or play fight or all these other things that are essential for a happy rat life. Regardless of how much time you spend with them, you won’t replace a ratty friend. This is animal abuse. I’m not saying that to be mean or anything, you probably didn’t know better, but for your animals well-being please either neuter your male rat (even tho this harbors some risks, please do this at a rat knowledgeable vet) and put them together or get at least another female and another male for your rats. And please don’t put the mouse with the rat, they have completely different language and it would probably end bloody

First I just want to say I love your videos. All of your rats are SOOOO cute, I started watch them after I got my girls and they've been so informative Anyways, I have a question for more experienced rat owners. I'm a newer rat owner, I've had my girls for about a half a year and I hoping someone more experienced could answer my question. Here's some basic information. they're very sociable and confident and I love them more than anything. I take them out of their cage to play on my bed with me (I put blankets down over my bed beforehand) and whatever boxes and toys I grab them that day. The only issue is that they scent mark everywhere every time I take them out of their cage, and they're on the bed for a while. I take out their litter pan and put in on the bed too and they only go to the washroom there but they keep leaving those droplets of urine every where. I've tried moving them to their litterbox when they do it but this only seemed to confuse them and one of them had a few accidents where they peed somewhere other than the litter pan so I stopped doing that. Is there some way I can teach them not to scent mark with urine or is this just something I'll have to live with? Thank you for your time, sorry for my rant lol.

It's been great to get to know your mischief a bit better! Whole lot of cuteness! At the end of the video, you mention how you've had a lot of rats due to their short lifespan and your longterm interest in them. I'm not sure if you've talked about this elsewhere, but I'm wondering how you handle removing them from their cages after they pass? In my experience with just a few rats, it was very difficult to do so, and once I did, I wasn't sure how to handle their bodies. It would be great to learn about your experience and perspective on that awful process, but I would completely understand if you didn't want to talk about it. Thanks!

He/she has been stranded after outside access was sealed by my landlord. Outside rats are subject to poisoning. I really hope that he/she is happy without other ratty friends, and wishes to continue as my guest. Unfortunately my greyhound best friend would be lethal if the two should meet. (Experience!) It's unusual for a genetic aberration (dwarf) to produce an improvement in health conditions, rather than creating new health issues. Think of many breeds of cats, dogs and rabbits and their genetic concentrations (eg, small heads, pushed in noses, extra long or extra short bodies,) or even rats :hairless, russian blues, harleys as you mentioned, tend to come with new sets of problems that the originals don't. That dwarf rats are less prone to tumours and cancers (you didn't mention if they are more prone to anything else) is amazing!

@ShadowTheRat Жыл бұрын
You'd be surprised - I've seen people scammed $200-300 dollars out of rats, especially the more unique varieties like werewolves which often go for $70-100 or more. Usually they'll send a photo from google and ask for a payment beforehand - pretty sketchy since even breeders who do downpayment only do $10 or so usually, but if your really wanting one variety I could see it being easy to overlook the red flags. What I was more referring to was breeders who mass breed and rehome sickly or too young rats - that's the more common type of "breeding scam" and leads to people getting sickly or poor tempered rats.

Can a person get a rat from the wild and take it to a vet? To save it instead of supporting breeders, also do they go to the bathroom in a litter box?
@ShadowTheRat Жыл бұрын
Wild rats are very different than domestics, and unless bottle raised a wild rat will be extremely fearful of humans and absolutely hate being contained in a cage. We have bred our domestics to be friendly and confident and to be okay in smaller enclosures, but this isn't true of wild rats and most do terribly in captivity. Wild rats can also carry diseases, and since they have less bite inhibition than domestic rats they are more likely top bite you deeply and cause serious infections. Wild rats also need other rats around just like our domestics, and catching just one wild rat would be taking it away from its group, which is quite stressful on them. Overall its jjust not a good idea to have a wild animals as a pet. Wild rats really don't make good pets and they also don't like being in captivity, meaning its just a miserable experience for both sides. So trapping a wild rat and trying to keep them as a pet isn't "saving" them, its more torturing them because they don't thrive in captivity. Now if you find an inured wild rat you can try to nurse them back to health, but once they are healthy they will need to be released. On that note, ethical breeders are a good thing - ethical breeding is how we get rats who are healthier, longer lived, and who have better pet temperaments. Ethically bred rats are kept in ideal environments from the start, and going to an ethical breeder is the best way to support keeping domestic rats in an ideal way.

Hey Shadow, out of curiosity, how did you improve Banana's tendency to bite? I have a friend who has 5 male rats and one of them is turning ~8 months old and is getting bitey towards one of the older rats. They have them separated now, 2 in one cage, 3 in the other, but just curious if you have any advice in dealing with bitey rats (specifically rat to rat). Thanks Shadow, love your videos!
@ShadowTheRat Жыл бұрын
Considering the males age and that it’s come on suddenly instead of been there from the start, I’d guess your most likely looking at hormonal aggression. That sort of aggression can’t be worked on behaviorally alone - first the rat needs to be neutered (either physically or via implant) to reduce the excess testosterone, and then they need a few weeks for levels to fall before they will calm down and be able to be safely reintegrated again. There is a chance he’ll improve in old age without a neuter, but typically this sort of aggression needs a neuter. Bananas aggression with my other rats was fear based and only seen during intros - she would cringe away from them but if they walked within a foot she would lash out first instead of waiting to see what they’d do. So I put on a glove and helped keep space around her, letting her get to move into their space as she got more comfortable. If she got too worked up I used the glove to block any aggression, and as she got more comfortable I stopped intervening as much, until she could safely live with them. If your friend has a good vet they can get the aggressive make evaluated for a neuter, or ask about chemical neutering via implant (it’s much cheaper and extremely low risk, taking only about 10 minutes and being outpatient - the downside is that not many clinics offer it and it only lasts about a year, but by that point with rats they are usually old enough that they don’t need a redo). They could also try reintroduced slowly in a neutral space where they use something like the glove method to help moderate interactions - it’s possible that over time they’ll be able to move back to one cage then, but if it is hormonal then it’s not super likely.
@brian.montero Жыл бұрын
@@ShadowTheRat Thanks for the great info! I know they have a very specific vet they take all their rats to for checkups, so I'll let them know about the implant option so they can ask about it. Really appreciate all your rat videos!
