@bre823 Жыл бұрын
Yay! I love when Bree is on! You're so knowledgeable! Just wondering, why wouldn't you work with snows?
@breezexotics Жыл бұрын
Snows (Axanthic x Albino) exploded in popularity over the last couple years. This has resulted in a lot of inbreeding as people made a mad dash to acquire the necessary genes to make this combo and produce them to supply the demand. I see more genetic defects in snows and het snows than any other morph available. Deformities may include: bug eyes, shortened snouts, underbites, overbites and even neurological issues. This is NOT linked to the genes - simply linked to the excessive overproduction of them by careless breeders. Based on the current trends I am seeing, in about 3 years time there will be more snow Hognose available than anyone knows what to do with. Therefore I have decided to avoid the project entirely, not because I don't enjoy the morph (I genuinely do it's very pretty), but because I just don't think producing more snows/het snows is good for the market and species at this time. Anyone reading and still wanting a snow Hognose, don't let this discourage you! There are still some amazing breeders working with Snow and have done an incredible job with them.

There we go she chimed in :)
@GoldenDeer_6 ай бұрын
@@breezexoticsthat’s a very good explanation and reasoning. I was wondering the same thing. Watching Snake Discovery I didn’t see any issues with their snows but honestly the popularity creating inbreeding makes a lot of sense.

Hognose Snakes (along with Crebos) are my favorite species. They were one of the first snakes I encountered out on Eastern Long Island as a child at our country house. Unlike Westerns the Eastern Hognose are specialty feeders that eat almost exclusively toads (& occasionally frogs.) They actually have a special spine at the rear of their throat adapted for puncturing & deflating amphibians who try inflating to avoid predation! Eastern Hognose snakes deserve an Oscar for their acting ability at “playing dead,” occasionally for long periods & even while being handled. I’ve never attempted keeping an Eastern Hognose beyond the summer months specifically because of their dietary requirements. I know Adam (Wicken’s Reptiles) mentioned a company that now produces liquids that smell like frogs/toads (& lizards) to saturate food items of specialty feeders like Eastern Hognoses and lizards for Crebos. While once abundant in the NE USA due tio habitat destruction they’ve become threatened and are now illegal to collect or possess. Also, because of their diets I don’t know anyone breeding Eastern Hognoses unless some advancements regarding their captive feeding have been made in the hobby.
@MikeTytula Жыл бұрын
There was actually a study that showed up to almost 30% of a Eastern hognoses diet is insects, didn't read through the whole paper but saw a data table that should that! Who knew right?? There are definitely some people breeding them, but they are few and far between.
@davidvento5481 Жыл бұрын
@@MikeTytula Whoa! I want to find that research. I grew up with Eastern Hognoses in my backyard and all I’ve ever seen them eat were toads (and the occasional treefrog.) Some of those snakes were quite huge, I can’t imagine what sort of insects might sustain them! Thanks for that info Mike! 👍🏻
