Montana Tony oh my goodness... I’m sure they were close friends and back then it’s good to have a man to protect you.. I always go up to every one and say thank you so much.. I had to go to the social security office and that place was packed.. this black women I sat next to beautiful woman so vibrant and I started talking to her and she said that her father was next to her and I listened to her story. The VA office said they needed to come to independance 60 miles and in the front row and they were sitting there waiting forever and I looked at him and I got up and I took his hand and I thanked him. and I told everything there about years of service and what that means.. they don’t know that stuff but they cared and said thank you and applauded him and he is the same age and he had tears in eyes and his daughter said no one has ever thanked him. But he just sat there and just all day long and never complaned. ..so I asked the gentleman to please take him back now and he did and I said look can you please resolve every thing at once and I will pay you if I need to and he said I don’t want money I will resolve everything and they came and got him and that guy said what unit were you in and he also served. and that daughter hugged me and said this experience was much needed and he gave me a hug and said I will gladly fight for you any day and proud to meet you and I said thank you and I teared up and I said you restored my faith and it was a pleasure to meet you and you are a special person and he wore his hat and jacket and obviously was proud to wear it. And 30 plus people stood up and applauded him and I hope I didn’t give him a heart attack but that was his moment to be thanked and I was proud of every one waiting hours screaming kids and every color and they belong in America no matter what race because that’s who we are and America isnt white people it’s all kinds and embrace it. And I told him you are my hero now get back there and this gentle man is also from the military so I thanked him also and his daughter was crying and I was to.... and I said because of your dad these wonderful people got to meet him and changed their lives. That was 2014. I think about him every day and how hard it was for him being a black man serving the country and your grandpa will probably tell you a story about that... you are a great man and I’m thankful for your story and you tell your hero that I love him and respect him and I care. Many blessings to you and I had the honor to read this.. thank you and god bless you and tell him I bet he was family with her and he is special

This is my sons account. I have spent a lot of time in the past looking out for me, myself and I. However there is a greater passion that is in me. That is helping others. I always wanted to be in the US Military, but at the time I was too afraid to go. After 911 I attempted to join again and let my family talk me out of it. Why? Because I was afraid. Afraid I would not be smart enough, strong enough or be able to remember everything. I would think that most people would be afraid of battle or being shot at or being in the dark or in an unknown area. Not me. I was afraid of the things that most people skip right threw. Now the time has come where I am about to be 42 years old and I have no chance of fighting for my country and leave a sad unfulfilled legacy and tradition. Something I learned threw my failure is this. Don’t be afraid. If You have it in you to do something go for it. God will see you threw, tell your Recruiter what you are afraid of and communicate with your CO. Do not be like me, afraid and regret it every day after. Live your dream. Fight for what you believe in the best you know how.

Much respect to the general, well deserved and earned. Having said that I am SO sick of all the "breaking barriers" and "glass ceilings" references. Just because a woman HASN'T done something (yet) doesn't mean they're still being PREVENTED from doing it. She got where she is because she was best qualified. That's how it's supposed to be. Godspeed General!

I kinda feel the same way sometimes. But when I was a young soldier, we were introduced to the first African American general in the U.S. Army. It was an eye opener to many, and an inspiration to us all. Many more African Americans followed him, including Major General Roscoe Robinson, Jr. , who commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in the latter years of my enlistment (1976-77), and of course Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State General Colin Powell. Barriers are meant to be broken. And when they are, a celebration is in order.

+Sand Viper As Victor said, your comment IS utterly un-American. I do not believe you served in the Marine Corp. If you did, then you served in it but we’re not a true Marine. I am retired Air Force and knew personnel of every branch. There were always joint-operations. The Army has their job, the Marine Corp has theirs, the Navy yet another. I never saw the Marine Corp interfere with Army personnel, nor Army interfere with Air Force, nor Air Force interfere with anyone. Everyone understood the others role. Everyone sometimes got briefed together. I will not let your arrogant, idiotic comment influence my respect for the Navy, Army, Coast Guard or Marine Corp.
