I think she uses her beak as a step-up aid, since she appears to be clipped. I've had and still have parrots that use their beak as a foot. I can proudly say all of my birds are not clipped, 100% flighted, and do they love to fly!

Trying to get an eclectus to do anything other than just stand there and chill out is an interesting challenge. Just chilling is totally their jam. She didn't seem to be a big fan of the water squirter - looked like it was being perceived as a negative. I noticed a little beak aggression and posturing change during the waterbath, and when the play-stand was moved. The beak motion during your first step-up just looked like her using her beak to help step. Perhaps her owner squirted her as a punishment? I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to / need to or try to punish an eclectus. Maybe it's just a new thing to her and she was taken aback. I am sooooo not surprised she just stayed there and slept there. She's so beautiful! Good luck working with her!

I've noticed this with female eclectus parrots, even my own, but my male is super hyper, active and responsive to everything. He has learned many tricks and free flies around the house, so it's weird to see other eclectus parrots be so calm or chill. Raising him as a baby on a good diet and training early seems to be a huge influence.

Eclectus parrots when they’re scared will naturally become immobile or freeze as it helps them evade predators they’re not like other parrots that will scream and make a fuss so a quiet eclectus is a unhappy eclectus

Hi Jamie, Fennel is beautiful 😍. I have a female eclectus Nala, she is now 8mnths of age. I have had her since she was 5 weeks old. For as long as I can remember, once she began stepping up she has always rested her beak on my hand first . I just figured it was an ecky thing too do lol.

This eclectus is so different from my male, I wonder how her owners interact with her. My female taught my male to scream and that's the only problem he's really giving me aside from his hyperactivity when friends are over. Other than that he's really active and independent and has learned many tricks thanks to Jamie and Dave's videos!

I LOVE how you work with the birds and how to talk about not commanding them to do anything. Giving choice is what all animals need when working with them. I'm a certified professional dog trainer, I don't know anything about birds (I'm actually scared of them haha), but the idea people have a commanding animals is so outdated. They are sentient beings with thoughts, wants, and needs so building a trust is a must! :) Great content!

You should see her up close, electus feathers are almost like hair compared to standard bird feathers, also the male of this species is bright bright green, stunning as a pair.

Not smart though, parrots make hissing sounds at each other as the ultimate warning/aggression (offence or defence). I named my B&G "Sunny" because her previous name was really inappropriate, but was not the best idea. So, names starting with ffff or sssss sounds... not really that great.

I've only just found your page, I want to thank you. After just watching your post about new parakeets my bird, whom I've had about 6 months, is now coming to my hand in cage and on my finger. Still doesn't want to come out of cage. Things got complicated within a week of getting him, I was gifted 2 green checked conures. Kind of a re-rescue so he didn't get attention he needed.

I live in north Qld where they are a native bird and my female eclectus likes/needs to have water on hand to dunk her food in. Being mainly a fruit eater in the wild, they like to make their pellets and other hard food, soft and mushy if they can. Mine has a low limit on how many treats [dried banana and fruits and a few nuts etc] she will eat before heading to the water bowl.

She is so beautiful! I was thinking, since she is clipped, maybe that's why she uses her beak so much. She doesn't trust herself and needs a way to stabilise when she crosses from the perch to the hand.

I'm looking forward to this story as my husband and I have a 10 week old Eclectus hen we have been hand raising since she was 3 weeks hatched. We also have a male and female Eclectus who are 4 years old, who aren't bonded and not the parents of the baby. We are very anxious to raise Velvet Blue to have a calm and balanced personality. She has been free flying around our house for 2 weeks and spends almost half her daytime outside her cage being with us. She has only been able to confidently perch for 3 weeks so still sleeps nights in her baby crate. We try not to pat her, understanding this isn't a natural desire of parrots even when domesticated, but at this stage she enjoys interacting by willingly flying to and landing on an outstretched hand and snuggles up to necks in the evening as bedtime approaches.

AWWW, BABY! My Eclectus lunged some as a baby. It appeared to be a fear reaction to new potential dangers. He always stepped beak first because he was very clumsy and unsure. They are WAAAY SLOW DEVELOPERS! The only thing they are really into from the beginning is food, food, FOOD! My guy didn’t play right away, didn’t vocalize, didn’t perch at night (platform bed), didn’t have strength or coordination for a while. He was literally more like a human baby. It took me an adjustment to realize that they do LITERALLY EVERYTHING slowly. At a year he was hanging and playing some. At 1.5 years he moves about more like a parrot and has a pretty amazing vocabulary. He is just now beginning to consider dancing. Gentle, interactive, very intelligent, but unlike your average monkey bird. So glad you get to be personal with this lovely girl. ❤️❤️❤️

In my experience with ekkies, they use their beak a lot to step up to check and see if whatever they are going to step on is stable enough before putting their full weight on it. Some are also pretty good with strangers.

I was thinking the same.. I have had two female roratus ekkies over the years and they are very gentle with their beaks.. I saw not aggression in Fennel when she put her beak down to step up. I think repeatedly pulling back the offered hand has an effect on the trust level of these birds... she knows the hand is offered to step up, but then immediately denied when she tries. I hope things improve and she catches on to how Jamie wants it done.

Yes, mine was the same- so accepting of people. My Vet was amazed (Dr Hodges on CritterFixers). He just sat and held him and they bonded immediately. Ekkies are different. Like human babies at first. Unsure of their footing.

My grandmother use to have a rescued eclectus parrot, and in a day of meeting her (i was only 8,) i was the only one she went to. she was plucked all over. she for some reason trusted me, and it was my first interaction and relationship with a bird. my grandmother lived with us for a couple of months, and eventually she moved out with the bird and i will always remember her. she loved cuddling with me and playing peekaboo. but out of everyone i wonder why she chose 8yr old me so randomly. but she taught me a-lot of things :). (her name was baby🙃)

I'm an older budgie owner and my bird's perch is taller than me. I use a rescue stick to reach up to my bird.(stick wrapped in jute) A peck at the stick still means no but one of my budgies uses her beak also to move around. Her cage didn't allow her to fly. It was amazing and at times hilarious watching her build her wing muscles...

I have an African Grey he is 15 years old and despite I have watched all your videos about african greys, i cannot change him, he is so much stubborn and phobic about everything , after some seconds he try to bite and he is afraid even the new toys that I buy for him. The contrast in how much space you gave Morgan and how much you are pushing this girl is amazing. I wonder what the "I am flashing you the black" (10:14, 10:20) actually means. She is signalling something. (I have babysat a lady-ekkie a month or so ago, she never did it to me.) Of course the feathers will turn black with too much fat in the diet. We saw it with a holliday-guest at the bird shelter: the owner insisted we fed his male ekkie a special mixture with coconut'butter' daily and his feathers were turning so dark already! He was not yet 3 years old but looked like a very old bird already, and there was no stopping the owner from keeping this up! :(

Eclectus tend to be gentle cerebral introverts.

She appears absolutely sweet, and to a perfect stranger at that. Perhaps a close analysis and observation of the owner's behavior and interaction with their bird should be the starting point (as opposed to simply looking at the bird for a behavioral problem) because sometimes its not the bird. Simply dropping their pet off to a stranger in a very scary airport setting tipped me off to a deficit of compassion. I would only do something like that if it was an emergency. Secondly, she's a female who as you know are subject to periodic hormonal "aggression" (comes and goes, especially with eggs or in her case, as she matures). You sign up for a roller coaster ride of sorts (sometimes) when you opt for a female bird as a pet. I could write so much more, but it's possible she simply does not like her owners. It happens. They're little creatures with feelings of their own, and they're very perceptive. One example: My sister's husband bought his dream bird, a red Lori. My sister's husband was a loud obnoxious red neck (pardon the term, but I too could not stand him). His bird appeard to be disinterested, scared, he appeared to be fear biting, just did not look like it was going to work out. His bird hated him (he had good judgment). I however, spent 30 minutes with him, the whole time he was sitting on my hand, he was making a hawkish "scree" sound, staring down at my hand in a hawkish way (one false move and I'll bite you way). I spoke sweetly to him for 30 to 40 minutes, and all of a sudden "flip" he flipped over in my hand, I almost had to catch him because he just wanted ti lay upside down in my hands. In that split second, he decided. He took a 180 degree turn in behavior. He immediately decided he loved me, and began to behave like the hand fed bird he'd been raised to be. From then on out (except for the man who owned him) he was as friendly and sweet as a kitten. And of course hilarious and playful as Lori keets are. Summary: sometimes it's just chemistry. The bird in the story was named "Flip" forevermore for the sweet moment in time. I wish they would have let me keep Flip, because we were buddies. ❤️🐣 PS. This bird's parents could be perfectly lovely people, but I'd always observe the "people parents" (of the bird), if they have kids, their behavior with the bird, and so on - before I begin judging and working with the bird if possible. [it goes along the same lines of "you can learn almost everything you need to know about a person (or family) by first observing their kids and pets (if they have them)". In this case learn a lot about the described problems by observing the owner when interacting with their bird.

It's like cat litter. Makes it easy to scoop up and clean the droppings 😊 I use crushed walnut hulls in the bottom of my conure's cage and play stand.

It's crushed walnut shells and cleans up similar to cat litter in the sense I use the same sort of scoop for it.

Treats don’t always work with young Eclectus, but she may have used the treat bowl. They are clumsy and unsure, generally beak first. Mine would reach for sleeves, rings, anything to stabilize before stepping.

At what point does a medium bird shift from baby bird to adult bird? Does it last through several hormonal cycles or does the baby behaviour last as long as you encourage it?

With an Eclectus it is very different. They are very, very slow to mature.

Hey I have a question me and my daughter we got a Black Cap Conure about a month ago my question I’m pretty sure she likes me but she is bad about going to my shoulder then and most of the time she start trying to bite me on the neck now I try my best to not be negative and this is the first time we have had a bird and we do enjoy her I watch lots of your video and do research on them but so I was wondering if you had any advise for me that you can share thank Jeff watkins

Just a thought- conures are very protective of their humans. They tend to bite YOU if an intruder is potentially more than they can handle. They want you to run for cover. If the intruder is small enough they can handle it, they will fight for you! Wish I had known this sooner. As a slow learner it would have saved me a lot of pain. 🤭❤️‍🩹

How about offering some green beans, broccoli, carrots, very healthy...my parrots love veggies.. Pellets are not always the answer. No foreging for them w.pellets.

I have a female i recently rescued, really bad plucker, screams like crazy, and always bites after about 2 minutes of just hanging out on me... any ideas? We have her on harrison pellets and dont really feed her junk.

From my research with ekkies, pellets aren’t always a good choice because their digestive tracts can pull too much of the nutrients from them which can have other issues. Sugar of any kind (even in fruits!!) can have effects on hormones and will sometimes make birds extra screamy. Try cutting out pellets slowly and limiting fruit if you haven’t already and see if that helps!!

What worked for me is to give them space when hormonal, show respect and punish them when they don't show respect. The way I punish my female for biting is to have a time out room or cage, I throw a towel over her, wrap her up and gently put her in time out cage. Female eclectus are strong headed and think they are the boss, they behave like this in the wild, so command that respect from her, don't let her be in control. Also some eclectus do well on pellets and some don't but I recommend restricting their amount of pellets, use as a supplement, not a main. With fruits, go for the low sugar soft pulpy fruits like your blueberries. Eclectus love eating but it should be lots of low energy food.

Eclectus require a lot of fresh vegetables because they have a totally different digestive system. Not enough veggies will cause toe tapping, wing flipping, and attitude changes. ❤️ They also prefer a more relaxed, less noisy environment. They don’t process stress like other birds.

@@justrandomthoughts4233 totally agree! My blue parakeet... I'd say the struggles for sure. Originally our budgie was purchased for my bf son, but the situation changed and we've had her about a year. She has been slow in her training due to my work hrs (graveyard), but has been progressing due to birdtricks, they've been amazing and love them so much!! Diet has been my only issue....

This is one of the sweetest babies, but she seems a little off balance. Just putting her beak on you to balance. Never pull your hand away, she falls, then won’t trust you!!

tree looks plastic, where even claws won't stop her from sliding off, like what happened on the kitchen counter accident. Beak as a foot? Maybe, but IMO it is also a primary sensor, like human babies use theirs.

My female uses her beak to grab my hand and step on. She doesn’t look angry in the first part of the video. It’s just an ekkie thing. Also, pellets are a big no no for eclectus. They don’t thrive on a nutrient dense diet in the wild and pellets have an over abundance of nutrients packed in them. If you feed an eclectus only a pellet diet that over abundance of nutrients turns into involuntary muscle movements called wing flipping and toe tapping. Pellets should be fed as treats, very minimally. Vegetables should comprise of 80% of the diet and fruits 20%. We don’t touch pellets in my house. Female eclectus are known to be awnry and have an attitude. Mine is super independent and runs the house. She will tell me when she doesn’t want to be messed with. She grabs my hand and pushes it away. Hope you can help rehabilitate her!

Young ekkies do tend to lunge at things out of fear but mine never actually bit anyone. Just paranoid when young. Also very clumsy. They don’t like fast movements or loud noises as babies. So different from Conures or ‘Toos or ‘Tiels.

So from @8:50. From the Birds' point of view. First, you put me on a surface I can't grab. So I fell to the floor. Trust broken #1. Then you chase me down in the sandbox. Then you put me up high in a fake tree. Without asking me if I was afraid of high places. Trust Broken #2. Then you use a squirt bottle with water I guess in my face. Trust Broken #3. After assaulting me with water. You offer me a spoon of something funny-looking. Trust Broken #4. It could be poison. LOL! If I was the bird it's what I would think. As who is this human female?

The only parrot species that the male and female have different feather coloration plus the females are polygamists and it is so weird because we are used to knowing that the parrots are pair bonders
