By breeding house cats with wild animals, humans developed hybrid cats that look like little leopards. Bengal cats are a breed that was developed by breeding domestic cats with asian leopard cats. The first American bengal breeder is a woman named Jean Mill, but her work has continued through other breeders. We met one of those breeders, Anthony Hutcherson, when we went to film the cats at the Westminster Dog Show. Besides bengals, we also saw another hybrid breed: savannahs. Instead of asian leopard cats, savannahs were developed by breeding house cats with servals. Unlike the other two breeds, the last breed we met, toygers, are not hybrid cats. Breeder Judy Sugden created the breed by carefully breeding domestic cats with qualities that resemble wild tigers. To learn more about the cats and the breeders that made possible, watch the video above.

Get a cat. Million of cats would love to meet you and be your forever kitty - just choose one (or two). Cats are sooo much better than kittens; all kittens are cute but cats have 'personality' and you can pick the one (or two) that suit your lifestyle; a cuddle-puss, an independent character; one who loves to play or one who only sleeps on your lap ... I adopted an adult cat and that was one of the best things I ever did in my entire life. Go get a kitty!

If51aj - there are cat fostering programs at most no-kill rescue shelters. Fostering is a great option for you and kitty. You get the company of a cat till it can find a forever home and cat gets to relax in your place instead of a cage or crate in a shelter. They pay for vet bills and usually food and litter too. Although cats marking is a problem for some kitties - others wouldn't ever pee outside their box ^..^< I don't know about Zeeahko's situation; landlords can be anti-cat as well :(

It’s funny that we went overboard with dog breeding. I have a Weenie Dog and I’ve done lots of research of how to care for her. Then I came to a stop..a video that showed how we corrupted the dogs heritage...(I think). The German Shepherd is shorter and is fatter than it was. My dogs breed has a longer body and if not hold correctly, its spine can be cracked(or broke ). The pugs face is more spatted in , and you can barley see the muzzle (that’s why they have breathing problems). But my point is that I hope they don’t go *TOO* overboard like we did to the dogs. Hopefully they do it carefully like they said. :)

They had been dumped in a plastic bag and left in a rubbish bin, all because Luna had a 'too short' tail, and Kuro had a missing leg. I love my Luna and my Kuro, and I'm so thankful for the amazing person who found them.

Wild simmer there's is a stray Bengal running around my neighborhood from the glance I got of her. Absolutely gorgeous. We tried to trap her, but she was too smart. I've never seen her since.. I own two pure breed Bengals named Anubis and Hermes. Hermes tail is shorter than it should be, he has a unusual nose shape without the dip in the nose bridge(I can't even really see and has no negative health effects) and he is overall stockier than most Bengals. He has shorter legs and is much more muscular and not as skinny than other Bengals. Makes him unsuitable for breeding somehow. He just turned 2 a few weeks ago and he is perfectly healthy and a sweet cat. Anubis had a typical Bengal body but his coat doesn't have the most desirable markings/rosettes. Both of them are awesome boys and we love then to pieces. They come from the same breeder but aren't related at all. Which was important to me. I don't want beautiful cats. It want happy and healthy cats.

Alexander Oquendo nope, not kidding you. A domesticated animal can be perfectly content living with humans. Cats, dogs, horses, etc. have evolved for thousands of years to live in human conditions. Dogs can digest kibble, cats can live in houses there entire lives. An exotic pet has needs that a suburban family can’t heed to. How happy do you think a tiger that lives in a cage in someone’s yard is? A wild bird that’s lived it’s entire life flying long distances being out into a space they can barely stretch their wings? Exotic pets and domesticated pets are different.

If you all only knew how many cats and kittens come into an animal shelter every year especially in the spring. Cats give birth then four to six weeks later they go into heat again and the cycle is repeated. Many times they just leave the litter of kittens to fend for themselves. Sometimes Good Samaritans find them usually in bad shape. Sometimes there's not enough money or adopters to save everyone. ❤️ From a former West Virginia animal shelter director.

As a veterinarian who has seen bengals and savanna cats in practice, I think it is important to warn people that these two breeds are much more likely to be aggressive than your average domestic shorthair. I have met friendly bengals but they are the rarity not the norm. If you really want one of these cats I recommend getting one that's at least 9 months old and has a friendly disposition. Also visit your breeder's facility and see if the animals they are using for breeding have good dispositions. While you may want a tiny leopard or serval in your home, I am sure you would prefer a cat that lets you pet it.

My two bengals are daft as a brush but they only show agression to each other and it's more like wrestlemania. In 9 months I've only seen them hurt each other (nipping ears rather than anything serious) twice. Any scratches on us have been accidental (hadn't trimmed their nails and they jumped over us to get chase a fly or similar) or during play. They are defintely willful and energetic but I have been late for work several times because they were being so cuddly. I agree with meeting the parents. Our cat's parents seemed very calm and good natured. I read somewhere that you should avoid any breeder who won't let you see the parents.

@clandes7ineindya154 7 жыл бұрын
That's awesome :). I have met friendly Bengals, don't get me wrong! But they tend to be more likely to bite me than the average cat. That being said 90% of cats hate the vet, so even cats that are great at home may be aggressive here. I have had more than one owner of Bengals tell me they would have gone with a different breed had they known that Bengals tend to be more aggressive. I have had two owners who expressed regret at purchasing their Bengal because they cannot pet or hold their cat. I think there are Bengal breeders who care about temperament like those in the video, and others that just care about looks.
@davidmarshall6998
@davidmarshall6998 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it sounds like bad breeders. Bengals certainly need a lot of attention and things to do and they can be quite vocal too. Ours went to the vet yesterday and yelled all the way. Once let out one of them was totally chilled and the other went and hid behind the vet's computer and refused to come out. One of the reasons they were there was to get a tick removed and even then he tensed up but was OK. I suppose it's the same with normal cats. If the breeder sucks or the initial owner does then the cat grows up mean. It's the same with raising children. :-)

Another thing that really enrages me is that most, of not all, people who buy these end up breeding them (often irresponsibly) to make money. I am told that breeders who sell them charge twice as much for the un-neutered ones, but people don't mind paying up because they can make it all back...and then some.

As Bengal owner I strongly advise people not to get these designer wild cats. It's not fair to them to be confined and restricted away from their wild nature. They're just TOO MUCH CAT for most people. Once the novelty wears off, then you're stuck with a very energetic cat you can't deal with. very-very few people can provide an adequate home for these cats. NEVER GET AN ANIMAL BASED ON LOOKS! they never say what they do with all the cats that don't make the grade?

They sell the ones that don't make the grade after they get them fixed. That way they control the future look of the breed, but people who want them can have them. But I agree that F1s shouldn't be sold to city dwellers. But for farmers and people with lifestyle properties, it should be an option as long as they realise the commitment they're getting themselves in for. Some people want that much cat.

A stray mom cat gave birth to 3 kittens at my house. Don't know what happened to her, I used to feed her every day for four weeks, until one day she just suddenly disappeared, but the she left the kittens behind. One's almost fully black with a little white, one's almost fully white with a little black, and ones fully white with a little yellow. The mom was a calico and she split her colors between her kids. Well, two of them are now with me permanently and one's with my friend, and we couldn't be any more happier. I'm sure I wouldn't have been any happier than I am now with these bred ones. Don't pay extra when you can have the same amount of happiness while also helping strays have nice lives.

My mom once took care of a ton of cats that animal control released in a empty lot right beside her house. She had her hands full for years until she captured each cat and actually adopted them out like the animal shelter should have done in the first place. The frustrating thing was sometimes they would drop them off without even being fixed even though they were supposed to fix them before releasing them. Now the lot next to her house was built up so animal control couldn't dump the cats out there anymore.

Selective breeding is an old and common practice and is how we have so many dog and cat breeds. Selective breeding doesn't make a dent in the cat population crisis, and in some cases has been a result of scientific research for helping our understanding of human diseases. In fact, one great thing about the Bengal cat is that they're hypoallergenic. So my family member who otherwise wouldn't have know the joys of having a pet cat, is currently experiencing that joy. Perhaps blame the other large scale breeders of common cats and the kitten industry!

Mike the Headless Chicken Dachshunds are relatively healthy if kept on a proper diet. If you want a better example look at the French bull dogs who’s breathing is incredibly like breathing through a straw. A way to maybe reduce the amounts of animals bred would be to introduce laws requiring a license to breed specific animals with greater health rirks

It's possible but highly unlikely that someone will be able (without a dna lab) to create a cat breed like those dogs that can't survive without humans to care for them. Cats are predators (proper dogs are too). Don't believe me, just watch them hunt. This is Nature we are talking about, only the strongest breeds will survive by themselves with no handouts..... Dogs that are being selective breeding like this, often suffer from horrible sides effects; so this could also happen to cats as well. There's also, an awful lot of over population of cats (mostly feral and stray cats). Which can be VERY bad, for numerous of reasons. These are things to just keep in mind. www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/dogs-that-changed-the-world-selective-breeding-problems/1281/ m.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation/ www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-21236690

Proffessional cat breeding in general is better controlled than most dog breeding. Most cat breeders breed for color and pattern and registered breeders are very careful to prevent inbreeding unlike many dog breeders. In general carefully bred cats are far more healthy and have less defects than most common domestic cats you find in shelters or on the streets because many of those cats are severely inbred.

Overpopulation is not coming from these cat breeders. It’s coming from everyday people who pick cats up from god knows where and never get them fixed, then dump them outside or let them out unsupervised. Bengals are $5000+, nobody is dumping that out on the street, and most if not all are fixed before purchase because breeding licenses are hard to get and required.
