Cats are sooo much better than kittens; all kittens are cute but cats have 'personality' and you can pick the one (or two) that suit your lifestyle; a cuddle-puss, an independent character; one who loves to play or one who only sleeps on your lap ... If51aj - there are cat fostering programs at most no-kill rescue shelters. Fostering is a great option for you and kitty. You get the company of a cat till it can find a forever home and cat gets to relax in your place instead of a cage or crate in a shelter. They pay for vet bills and usually food and litter too. Although cats marking is a problem for some kitties - others wouldn't ever pee outside their box ^..^< I don't know about Zeeahko's situation; landlords can be anti-cat as well :(

Once the novelty wears off, then you're stuck with a very energetic cat you can't deal with. very-very few people can provide an adequate home for these cats. They sell the ones that don't make the grade after they get them fixed. That way they control the future look of the breed, but people who want them can have them. I own two pure breed Bengals named Anubis and Hermes. Hermes tail is shorter than it should be, he has a unusual nose shape without the dip in the nose bridge(I can't even really see and has no negative health effects) and he is overall stockier than most Bengals. He has shorter legs and is much more muscular and not as skinny than other Bengals. Makes him unsuitable for breeding somehow. He just turned 2 a few weeks ago and he is perfectly healthy and a sweet cat. Anubis had a typical Bengal body but his coat doesn't have the most desirable markings/rosettes. Both of them are awesome boys and we love then to pieces. They come from the same breeder but aren't related at all. Which was important to me. I don't want beautiful cats. It’s funny that we went overboard with dog breeding. I have a Weenie Dog and I’ve done lots of research of how to care for her. Then I came to a stop..a video that showed how we corrupted the dogs heritage...(I think). The German Shepherd is shorter and is fatter than it was. My dogs breed has a longer body and if not hold correctly, its spine can be cracked(or broke ). The pugs face is more spatted in , and you can barley see the muzzle (that’s why they have breathing problems). But my point is that I hope they don’t go *TOO* overboard like we did to the dogs. Hopefully they do it carefully like they said. :)

Overpopulation is not coming from these cat breeders. It’s coming from everyday people who pick cats up from god knows where and never get them fixed, then dump them outside or let them out unsupervised. Bengals are $5000+, nobody is dumping that out on the street, and most if not all are fixed before purchase because breeding licenses are hard to get and required.

As a veterinarian who has seen bengals and savanna cats in practice, I think it is important to warn people that these two breeds are much more likely to be aggressive than your average domestic shorthair. I have met friendly bengals but they are the rarity not the norm. If you really want one of these cats I recommend getting one that's at least 9 months old and has a friendly disposition. Also visit your breeder's facility and see if the animals they are using for breeding have good dispositions. While you may want a tiny leopard or serval in your home, I am sure you would prefer a cat that lets you pet it.
@davidmarshall69987 жыл бұрын
My two bengals are daft as a brush but they only show agression to each other and it's more like wrestlemania. In 9 months I've only seen them hurt each other (nipping ears rather than anything serious) twice. Any scratches on us have been accidental (hadn't trimmed their nails and they jumped over us to get chase a fly or similar) or during play. They are defintely willful and energetic but I have been late for work several times because they were being so cuddly. I agree with meeting the parents. Our cat's parents seemed very calm and good natured. I read somewhere that you should avoid any breeder who won't let you see the parents.
@clandes7ineindya1547 жыл бұрын
That's awesome :). I have met friendly Bengals, don't get me wrong! But they tend to be more likely to bite me than the average cat. That being said 90% of cats hate the vet, so even cats that are great at home may be aggressive here. I have had more than one owner of Bengals tell me they would have gone with a different breed had they known that Bengals tend to be more aggressive. I have had two owners who expressed regret at purchasing their Bengal because they cannot pet or hold their cat. I think there are Bengal breeders who care about temperament like those in the video, and others that just care about looks.
@davidmarshall69987 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it sounds like bad breeders. Bengals certainly need a lot of attention and things to do and they can be quite vocal too. Ours went to the vet yesterday and yelled all the way. Once let out one of them was totally chilled and the other went and hid behind the vet's computer and refused to come out. One of the reasons they were there was to get a tick removed and even then he tensed up but was OK. I suppose it's the same with normal cats. If the breeder sucks or the initial owner does then the cat grows up mean. It's the same with raising children. :-)
@adrianna47257 жыл бұрын
I agree, I have a savannah cat and he's pretty agressive, loud, and energetic. He's also pretty rude at first.
@kand1987 жыл бұрын
Clandes7ine Indya I find bengals take a lot longer to adapt to new environments, and while they can be super friendly, it's usually them petting you, not the other way round. You can't treat a bengal like a house cat, it's definitely a wild thing, and owners who try and treat their bengals like one breed distrust, anger and dissent in their animals, which can lead to aggression. It's taken 4 years for our cat to settle down to the point where you can stop her and pet her while she is walking around the house. I also feel that you shouldn't get a bengal to be an indoor cat, and they require a large roaming outdoor territory. While I am sure there are bad bengals and bad breeders out there, I'm certain it's more down to bad owners.

The problem about overpopulation of cats in shelter is not due to breeders,it is due to people that adopt/buy a cat then abandon the cat
@anna.3186 жыл бұрын
Night Shadow Breeders are a problem, and its not just people who abandon cats but also the overpopulation from unfixed cats reproducing. Those people who are buying from breeders could be adopting from shelters with many healthy cats and kittens that are at risk for being euthanized.

Yes, but those cats are in those shelters because of people abandoning them and/or irresponsible breeding (just thinking: i'd like my cat to have kittens and not having anyone who wants to adopt them). I don't see why breeding is even an issue, there are also a lot of human orphans, yet the same people advocating cat adoption only do get pregnant and never adopt a child.
@naerys876 жыл бұрын
I mean, I specifically wanted a ragdoll mix with short hair but a sweet temper. You won't find that in a shelter. And ever since I got her, people are like oh my god she is beautiful and sweet, if you ever breed her I want to buy one. Never said that I'm going to breed her, I don't know yet, but I believe that's very different from just letting your cat wander outside to get pregnant by any stray and then finding out when the litter is born, then not being able to find homes for them because no one is interested in another "average" cat, etc.

My adopted cat died after only 1 year as she was an old cat. And now I'm 28 I saw a Bengal and I wanted a Bengal. I would never abandon a pet that isn't something in my DNA. Everyone's here arguing over adopt or shop, but my argument is that if LOADS more people actually did research on animals before buying them as pets, adopt vs. shop wouldn't be an issue. Please, everyone, consider your life with a pet similarly as you would consider having a baby. They are both expensive, require lots of time and effort, need to be taught life skills, and need proper nutrition/space/enrichment. DO YOUR RESEARCH and really consider if a pet is right for you, and if so, which breed/species. Adopt from a shelter or shop from a reliable breeder.
@wyvernnymph57576 жыл бұрын
PangoPixel I do agree with what your saying to a point but part of what your missing is that there are already cats in the shelters far before these people started making more cats. Whether or not they’re cool looking is not justification for adding to the problem. That’s just another version of ignorance when it comes to owning pets. People are only concerned about what they want out of an animal rather than treating it like a living being
@Rainygirl31006 жыл бұрын
@@wyvernnymph5757 Responsible owners don't choose an animal based on just how cool it looks, there are several factors. Some people want a specific temperament to match their lifestyle, or want to avoid problems with the animal's health or mind. Some folks need hypoallergenic breeds. You can't always get that from shelters, which often have mixed breeds and animals that need special care/training. My point is that if more people DID start treating their animals like living things and realized the care they need, there would be less animals in shelters in the first place, and we would mostly get our pets from good breeders. "Adopt don't shop" is a fine sentiment, but I feel like it's disrespectful to the pet owners who choose to buy from ethical breeders and treat their animals to the best of their abilities, but because they didn't save an animal from the shelter they're bad people I guess?

I am a huge advocate of adopt don’t shop, but I think it’s important to support good breeders as they keep species lines healthy. The sad fact is, most of the cats in rescues don’t have the best health. They may not different genetic and health defects, and while they may make for amazing pets, in the future, the species of cats will suffer. Breeders like these help keep a line of extremely healthy cats. I’m not sure if that’s exactly made sense, it’s less about the shelter cats being sick and more about them not being a perfect representation of their breed. They may have long legs or small ears, all of which are fine and still make for great pets but it’s important to still Worry about the species and the breed as a whole.

i think one of the reasons for that (the unhealthines in shelters) is puppy/kitten mills that just breed for profit (meaning they dont care about inbreeding) people will buy something from a "breeder"(meaning a mill but people buying do not know this because they didnt do much research) and then they see it gets sick or its not what they thought it would be and so then they get rid of said animal always research breeders and ask your local trusted vet because they will know a good breeder
@sahanak50416 жыл бұрын
MiiaBournewold yes well said! Most petstores that say they get their animals from reputable breeders are lying Also not all home breeders are good breeders and often lack the proper paperwork or knowledge. If you want an animal from a breeder, you have to be willing to pay. If you don’t have the budget, go to a shelter.
@96unicorns6 жыл бұрын
Actually inbreeding, which is common when your goal for the offspring relates to their appearance, is off course more common if you are getting your cat from a breeder, rather than adopting it. This increases the chances of genetically inherited diseases as it increases the degree of homozygousity in the offspring. Additionally, if you buy a cat the cats in shelters don't just disappear, they still usually breed plenty before dying which just further contributes to the cat overpopulation problem, so even if their genes were for some reason less fit, they'd still be contributing them to the population and possibly in much higher numbers as this is less likely to occur if they are given a good home and spayed or neutered.

Good luck as long as those cats have wild genes in their blood, the more difficult it is to deal or handle a cat - especially an F1 since is essentially a wild cat... these cats most likely will be abandoned based on that difficultly adding further to the shelter problem. But hey.. justification, right?

I had two bengal cats, which were the cats bred with leopards to get the pattern of their fur, and they were absolutely wild. They’d go on top of the wardrobe and jump from wardrobe to wardrobe and even climb ladders as well as get on ceiling beams and climbed whatever was tall. Apparently had some mice in the roof that they killed before me and my mom even knew of their existence. They didn’t like physical attention much, always jumping out of our arms and allowing pets at most and yet never preened against our legs either (we allowed them to get on our beds, but they didn’t cuddle and sleep on your chest or neck like usual cats do). They are good cats for those who have pests often and don’t like cats who are all too clingy and affectionate, though those who want cats to grab and kiss and cuddle with are better off adopting a different breed unless you want a domesticated animal to clean up any pests.

Proffessional cat breeding in general is better controlled than most dog breeding. Most cat breeders breed for color and pattern and registered breeders are very careful to prevent inbreeding unlike many dog breeders. In general carefully bred cats are far more healthy and have less defects than most common domestic cats you find in shelters or on the streets because many of those cats are severely inbred.
