Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it. Alison could have become bitter and twisted, resented her father and hated her younger sister, but she was mature and wise enough not to. She still felt loved, accepted and took the love that was offered to her, even if it wasn't the sort of love she would have preferred. But she still turned out to be a fine person, not consumed by jealousy.

She was both dad a and moms favorite before her sister was born The daughters are ten years apart. The younger looked like his wife more than the older; and being ten years younger had that dependency on Dad. That's what the older understood. Its not really the dads outlook, that was hers. When one daughter gets married and the other is still at home its going to seem like favoritism. Moms and dass learn as they go and adjustments made. But its still huge for the older daughter: she gets a million points for loving her dad and for being hugely mature. I love her right on attitude. I also appreciate Dads response; it was all golden.

We always aspire to extremes: the smartest, the prettiest, the strongest, the richest, the most powerful.... and yet there are so many people aren't going to win, but that doesn't make them losers and it doesn't mean they don't have thoughts or feelings worthy of respect. Marcia's character is constantly reaching out.... constantly trying to please.... constantly pouring out her heart to someone who only has eyes for another. It's both heartbreaking to watch and at the same time uplifting to see such pure, unconditional love. A wonderful performance.

What a touching scene. It would've been so easy for Allison to give into bitterness and resentment but she was simply grateful for the love she did receive. I've always felt this was arguably the best line of dialog ever regarding how to love someone and how to... be loved by someone. I had both daughters tell me the other one was my favorite - in the same day. I waited until they were together laughed and told them what the other had said. I did what I could to make both feel loved. In an argument with my oldest daughter when she had misbehaved as a teen, I asked her while I tell you off for your mistakes did you ever doubt my loyalty in loving you? She got quiet and said - no. That is all you can do - love loyally.

I think when a husband loses a wife he deeply loves too early or in an unnatural way part of you dies with her and you are not ready to accept life goes on without the one you love which is what happens to Bill's character. His favouritism for his daughter Susan is him seeing a lot of his wife in her, also he constantly wants Susan to find the kind of passionate love he had with his own wife which shows how much through Susan he wants to revive the life he had with his wife again. Allison is different she is not like his wife, also her marriage with Quince even though successful doesn't remind him of his own marriage, I think Allison understands all this that is why she doesn't resent her father because she knows he is grieving their mother's loss and only Susan can fill the void and being a daughter who loves her father deeply she doesn't begrudge him his happiness.

I am a father of two daughters. They are such different characters. I love them both equally, no favourites. As a parent to exhibit favouritism is unspeakable. It breaks my heart that there are fathers out there that can be like that. It would break my heart thinking my daughters thought the other one was my favorite. Growing up myself, I felt my younger brother was favoured. Honestly, I had no relationship to speak of with my father other than extreme fear and did spend his last 4 years trying to get closer to him. It wasn't till the day before he died, he actually told me he loved me. Its one of the saddest happiest days I spent with him. Make the most of the time you have with a parent, dont over analyse it, love unconditionally.

I’m a 54 yo father and husband and I have a 7yo girl and a 5yo boy and I’ve told them I love them a combined 500 times. It makes me furious that a parent can’t say those 2 easy words to their children! I don’t get it. And, if they only knew how unbelievably destructive it is for the son or daughter to yearn for that love, that affirmation their whole life. One of the (many) reasons that this film stands to be, perhaps, my favorite ever is that I'm not sure I had ever seen such a wonderful scene and sentiment before this movie and I am even less sure that I've seen one since - it resonates me in a way that, despite all the loneliness of my life, makes me feel a little less so. But more than that, I feel a tiny bit understood - unrequited love is terrible, but like all terrible things that one must endure, grace is paramount in getting through it and still being beautiful and lovable.

Everytime I watch this movie, I wait for the Peanut butter scene and the Cake scene, just because Marsha does such an amazing job at showing how much she wanted love from her father -- it's something everyone can relate to, the doubt of being loved, and the want for it. Wonderful, sincere moment for a child bringing up a very familiar and normal feeling that exists with so very many families with multiple siblings. The writers and actors handled this scene eloquently and honestly, no parent is a “bad” parent for perhaps having a favorite, it’s normal and chemical, it’s the equal love and attention that makes a great parent. Even as children we, in the deepest of our hearts often have a parent we are just naturally closer to or consider to be more of a favorite, but it’s something that is rarely brought up so delicately in a movie with such great writers and actors without drama or abuse or “over the top scenarios”. This was mellow in execution, yet poignant and “close to home” for so many families in regards to the dynamics between feelings shared between parents and their children, and children towards their parents. Watch this scene followed by the one where Joe talks to her husband Quince about their reliationship (or the other way around, it doesn't matter), and you realize that Allison really has it made. She has a husband who loves her so much it moves him to tears and she's managed to come to terms with the disappointing truth of her family's feelings towards her and still managed to rise above it with grace and maturity. The thing death was looking for was right there. Not with Susan, but with Allison and Quince. They're the true love story and rock solid relationship everyone aspires to, as well as the levelheadedness and maturity to cope with the bitter disappointments of life and still take it stride to appreciate the good things they do have going.

Yeah. Our father was the same, both with my sister and I. There was no "favorite one"... we were invisible for him, from an affective point of view. He did a great job as a material provider, we can't deny that and we'll always be grateful: he was flawless and we never had economic difficulties, not even once. But sometimes... well, y'know... you need something else besides food, expensive shelter and costly doctors and schools. Sometimes you need a goddamn hug, for fuck's sake. Sorry. Just recently, I truly realized maybe that was the only way he knew how to express love to others: making sure they were ok in terms of material security. His all-time phrase was "everything's ok? Do you need something else?" He had a difficult childhood and as far as I remember, he hardly mentioned anything related to our grandparents. "Let's talk about something else", he always said when me or my sister asked about them. The part at 2:03 really makes me cry. I never experienced that.

@@-Vitalis- In my culture, parents are expected to be strict and harsh. Fathers are policy maker, mothers are discipline enforcer. Parents don't express their love verbally. When children do great, they show approval, and that's it. That's where grandparents take their part. Grandparents spoil their grandchildren rotten, love them unconditionally, generously hug and kiss, defend them in front of the parents, talk proudly about how great their grandchildren to everybody on every chance, forgive them when they screw up, etc. Obviously they try to make up for how they treated their children THROUGH their grandchildren. And the cycle continues.. Having a son of my own made me understand. Now I feel how my parents felt. They wanted to make sure their children are tough. Such an amazing movie. I always felt it was underrated. And wow, what an outstanding cast. Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins worked together on this and Legend Of The Falls but they should have worked together more.

This film undoubtedly touch on a great many of life's points, relationships and bonds between family and friends. How you like to treat and respect others as you would like to be treated, unfortunately its seems to be more of a discipline rather than a natural behaviour for some. The film touched and reminded me of values and appreciation of those in my everyday. A great classic film 1998 unbelievable where did it go👍

Literally just watched this with a girlfriend (not romantic just a girl that is a friend) who had some how never seen it. I warned her to have tissues at the ready. Really is an undoubtedly underrated movie. Really makes you think about life, your actions and the benefits or consequences of those actions. The best part imo is when the father confronts death about his relationship with his younger daughter, he is clearly not in the least bit afraid of protecting her regardless of who or what he is talking to.

I was 39 years old when I saw this movie with my wife in the theater. Now, like Hopkins here, my wife is dead and I know that I will soon die too. The entire way I view this movie is so much different. Things like this scene here are so poignant. I think back to all the times I let my children and my wife down. Oh God if I could have known then what I know now.

I did feel her sadness, though not being the favorite. Even if felt loved, you could still feel that pain. She obviously felt her sister was loved more and we felt it too. I applaud character though, because she adored her father and it was ok he had a favorite because he was hers. I loved that line. She was an amazing daughter and sister, and it was ok.

He and the other daughter shared an ideal about love. It's impossible to compete with a shared ideal and I get the sense his favorite daughter resembles his wife in looks and demeanor. Can you imagine if one of your daughters was literally the 2 people you loved most in the world in 1 body

This points out the point of view of the one who is not the favorite. How it feels to be the "other one" She tells him that he conveys the thought "what does she want now!" instead of inspiring delight at her being there.
