We got into jujube about 3 years ago, when the Asian market that we sell our chestnuts to asked us to grow for them. We were first discouraged and told they won't grow here in zone 6a, then I was shown a heavily fruiting local tree. The main cultivar, Li, is self pollinating, most others are not. There is a very detailed youtube video on jujube in NM that tells you more than you wanted to know. We have about 30 out now, with another 15 going in this year. We have 6 varieties, with a few additions via grafting each year. Fun tree to grow.

It'll be interesting to se where dedicated plantsmen take this fruit. they may have been grown in China for millennia but I doubt they had people growing on 10,000 seedlings in hope of just one or two plants with desirable traits. Give it 50 years and Jujubes will be bigger, sweeter and more productive.

Where can I get jujube Trees
@patriciatravis3748 жыл бұрын
What is your secret (or, what am I doing wrong)? Most people in the southeast have difficulty in getting a decent crop. I have six varieties and only Silverhill sets well. My nine year old 'Li' only had eight fruit this year.

Don't grow from seed you'll be waiting forever. Splurge a little and buy a tree

I just planted a 4 feet tall li jujube tree in my garden yesterday. I live in Illinois, zone 5. I am wondering if li jujube tree is self pollinated? I only bought one tree from a nursery, don't know if I should buy one more to help with pollination. and what winter care tips would you recommend for this tree? it does get cold around late October here in Illinois from 30F to 9F. I don't know what to do, this is my first time planting this li jujube tree. please help!!

That depends on the variety. Some are partly self fruitful and produce more with a pollinator while others will not set fruit without a pollinator. Mine is a Li and is partly self fruitful-some fruit, not loaded down. Do an internet search with your variety + self pollinating/self fruitful, although you will find some conflicting info.

I think most jujubes are hardy to zone 5, so you shouldn't need to do anything special to winterize it. In terms of pollination, there is a lot of conflicting info, as Brett noted. I would say to plant another variety just in case. I got a lot more fruit-set out of a So when I grafted a bunch of other varieties onto it, though some of that could just be that it was more mature. Another thing to make sure of is that it gets as much sun as you can. The South side of the So (my oldest tree) has consistently had 5-10X more fruit than the North side of the same tree.

I would recommend that you buy a Lang variety which produces enough male flower to offer you more crop. As Bob (above), you could go to one of the forum and ask for cuttings from Lang and see if you can graft (I'm actually on the same boat somewhat). I have Sugar Cane, Honey Jar in addition to Li, but I think I would need a Lang cuttings from somebody. I do not think Sugar Cane and Honey Jar had much (if any male flower) from what I saw last year (first year) - no fruit despite my hand pollination attempt. :D

These trees originated in China. Where temperatures go either extreme heat to extreme freezing cold. So they should adapt quite well anywhere after Zone 4.

So how do you feed them, when do you feed them? What zones do they grow in? It is frustrating to have to ask these questions. All that information should be in the video. Where can I find them? What are the common names of these trees? The names you give mean NOTHING to me as a home gardener seeing this for the first time! Goodness! When and how is this tree pruned? (this video is of no use to me)

The fruit tree is called Jujube or Chinese Jujube or Chinese Date .... and it grows nearly every where and it needs long summers to have the best and sweetest fruits (More sun = sweeter Fruits). It survives winters with sup zero temperatures (-20 Celcius i think) ...best is wine growing regions or warmer. And for feeding ... you don't really need to do anything. Pherhaps some compost and thats it. Very small work is put into it
