Here is one of my all time favorite songs played on one of our Mira 18 1/2 inch Concert Grand console music boxes. Composed in 1904 by Kerry Mills with lyrics by Andrew Sterling, this is the fabulous "Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis". Kerry Mills composed some of the finest popular songs during a period I greatly enjoy, 1895 to about 1922. The song tells the story of a gentleman coming home from work and finding a note left for him by his wife telling him that she is bored with life at their "flat" and she writes that he (Louis) should "Meet me in St. Louis, Louis....meet me at the Fair...we will dance the hoochy koochy...I will be your tootsy wootsy...". The fair, of course, was the gigantic 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Both the tune and the lyrics are simply fantastic and the song will forever remain one of my all time favorites for listening. I thank you for stopping in and hope that you enjoy the video.

The movie "Meet me in St. Louis" with Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien is a classic and Ms. Garland is at the pinnacle of her career. They were absolutely enthralled by Ice Cream and the Night-Time display of Electric Lights!

So glad that you mentioned Bob Reuter, an amazing and multi-talented man who I knew who passed away tragically and far too soon.

Hurrah! What a wonderful melody! How pleasant is the sound of music-box! Music-boxes helps us to listen and learn to play melody on vibraphone, xylophone, celesta, marimba, and glockenspiel. Similarly barrel organ helps us to listen and practice music on either pipe-organ or reed-organ. Similarly player piano helps us to listen and practice music on piano. Even if demo on electronic keyboard imitates the melodies played by music-box, barrel organ or player piano to demonstrate the learners but it can't beat the real musical machines like these (music-box, barrel organs, player pianos etc.) Some antique mechanical clocks played melodies for each hour on either music-box, barrel organ or miniatured player piano built into it. Some of them just played melodies without striking the hours, some of them played melodies just before or soon after striking the hours on either dome shaped bell, chiming bar, tubular bell or coiled wire gong.

This tune reminds me of Billy Murrays version of Come take a trip in my air ship. That was the first cylinder i got to hear and I fell in love with the worbley tinny sound. I know what kind of music box I want because of your uploads. All the other antiques boxes I've gotten to hear just don't do justice to lovely tunes like the Mira Concert grand.

My grandfather had something just like this. I loved listening to the music. Sadly he passed away and it was stolen. I miss the beautiful sound, where could I purchase one? It's probably alot of money now. I'm only 17 but the sound kind of brings his memory back alive when I see this.

@EdisonSquirrel Thanks so much, Rocky! Always great to see a comment from you. I'd agree with you that Billy Murray likely felt some friendly competition with this rendition of Meet Me In St. Louis. I also enjoy his Edison cylinder recording of this tune. Stop back again anytime!

Was this song actually from 1904? I thought it wasn't written until the movie with Judy Garland some four decades later.
