A few years ago my husband had surgery and I was in the waiting room. A family with a boy about ten was sitting near me. It was clear to be the boy had some time of disability. While waiting, a therapy dog came in the room. The dog made a beeline for the boy. The boy lit up and boy and dog had a great time together. The dog stayed with the boy the entire time she visited the waiting room. It seemed to me that he sensed the boy needed her. After to dog left, the boy’s dad took him to the restroom. The mom looked at me with tears in her eyes and told me the boy talked and played and laughed with the dog more than he ever had with any person. She told me she and her husband were going to take the boy to the shelter to get a dog ASAP.

Some dogs will train themselves to take care of their human. Thought you might like this. My precious pitbull mutt, Rose, figured out how to make me eat when I haven’t eaten, figured out how to help me during a depressive episode (I sometimes scream and hit myself) by laying on top of me to hold me still, AND is smart enough to understand when certain animals are part of the family and will adopt any baby animals. Well, if they’re mammals at least 😂. Though she won’t touch birds unless it’s cooked chicken 😂

I went YEARS having depression and no dog. Life with depression SUCKS, but dogs make it bearable. If you can’t afford to have your own dog, just find a place to be around dogs (or volunteer, like someone else said). When my dog died and then my friend’s dog greeted me by knocking me over with happiness, I instantly knew I needed another dog. It also helps me exercise, since I have to take my dog for a walk.

Fun fact- I was super sick when I was younger and spent the first 6 years of my life almost always in the hospital. One day I was in a hospital room and the nurse asked my mom if I could go on a field trip, so I went. And a vet was in the kids room with a Dalmatian, he showed us how to listen to the heartbeat and find his pulse. Long story short I LOVED IT! I was hooked and wanted to become a vet as soon as possible. I’m now in my 3rd semester of vet tech schooling. So whoever that vet was thank you so much! Just sitting and talking with me for 15min changed my life!!
@KaoruGoyle6 жыл бұрын
Awesome that you found your call! When I was 8 i wanted to become a vet too, however I witnessed a neighbor's dog suffering epilepsia and she banged her head on the asphalt on the street, she was a very large labrador type dog and her owner struggled to hold her head and prevent her hurting herself. She hurt her nose and lips and started to bleed al over... then the next year another neighbor's German Shepard snapped her lead, crossed the street and got hit by a car... I saw everything, my neighbor screaming, the dog howling and then dying right there and her owner crying brokenly while she held her... And that's when I knew, I couldn't bear it, the suffering, watching dogs die as a part of my job... i just couldn't do it. I was told years later when I told this exact story... BUT,, if you become a good vet you can make the difference!!... No... I had to bury my 16 yr old maltese mix when I was 20 and it distroyed me, she was my sister. Can't win vs old age... and last year i had to to bury my 12 yr old rescued maltese mix that had a degenerative spinal cord issue and I'm still crying... I'm afriad i'm not strong enough for that job, I would cry with my patients's owners all the time :(... anyway, I just want to thank you for partaking into such a honorable profession.

I want to become a vet too. But after seeing my dog die in my arms, I'm now contemplating about it. It was a memory that haunted me till now. I have other pets too and I'm afraid of their death. Being a vet sure can save lives, but that is the positive side. You can interact with puppies and dogs and cats all the time. But the problem is, it's not ALL that. It includes failing to save some, watching some die. And I don't think I can handle that. I mean, just watching or reading bad things happening to dogs and cats hurts me already but to actually see that again, just like how I saw my beloved dog die, It's just too painful. Besides that, my grandma doesn't approve of it anyway because here in Ph specially since im in province, there's only a little amount of pet owners, sadly. There's a lot of stray cats and dogs in PH. And SOME even sells their dog and the one who buys it, kills and eat them. I'm not degrading my country, it's just what I know. So bottomline: I wanted to become a vet, I saw my dog died and became 100% MORE fragile, having pets and taking them to the vet is very uncommon in PH and I'm now undecided on what course to take

I have a 175 pound 4-year-old Newfie. He likes to carry around a plastic beach bucket on walks and "help" me carry things, mostly all the sticks he thinks we should bring home. We also can't swim in the sea without him trying to 'save' us by pushing us back to shore. They are great dogs, mellow, loving, good with animals, children, and people with physical needs. Really easy to train and the only large breed that is really good for apartment living. It's worth the endless grooming and cleaning slobber stalactites from my ceiling every day.

I'm not from there but I am from PEI which is one of the four Atlantic provinces including Newfoundland. I never hear people from outside of the Atlantic pronounce it properly so to see a New Yorker pronounce it properly was amazing.
