I'm a dog trainer in training (weird I know) but I've trained over 5 show dogs. The reason Bear knows which floor to get off is your body language. Even if you aren't aware, your body makes adjustments and prepares to leave the elevator before the doors even open. Those slight things are indications for Bear to prepare for command (moving, walking, sitting, ect.) Your dog is very intuitive to you. It's actually a sign that he's constantly waiting for your cues.

Bear probably can tell what the right floor is by smell. Dogs sense of smell is so good they can tell time with it, by tracking the dissipation of scents in their environment. I'd imagine every floor smells slightly different to a dog, because they smell so much more than we do.

I definitely think this is the best option! I volunteer at an animal shelter and we offer a "foster to adopt" program where you foster for a short period of time so you can get to know the dog and make sure they are a right fit before officially adopting them.

As someone who's had shelter dogs her entire life: A lot of good shelters and organizations will be happy to work with you in searching your next companion. I reach out to them, explain my situation and what I'm looking for in a dog (before I even go and see the dogs they have!) and then they will either suggest a dog who will match with what I've described or not. A lot of organizations also work with foster families and they can provide an even greater in-depth picture of their dog's personality. When you get a puppy from a breeder; even the best breeders in the world; you also wouldn't know what their personalities will be like, right? With shelter dogs, you will already get somewhat of an estimation like wether or not they are friendly with other dogs or if they have separation anxiety or if they have medical issues, etc. I would strongly advise everyone N O T to go and check out the dogs in their kennels beforehand. I really wouldn't. Why? Because it is a stressful environment for these dogs and they will absolutely not be acting the way they truly are. (Edit: Loudly barking dogs are likely just stressed out and so don't give a good first impression and are therefore not given a fair chance! After all, how many of you have fantastic family dogs who also bark at complete strangers approaching their territory when they're by themselves...?) Best to find a match by talking to the staff and ask if you can meet the dog in a separate room; as most shelters do have that option.
@byuftbl Жыл бұрын
It depends on the dog. Once we went with my parents to adopt their dog, and we walked down the aisle of kennels. Every dog was loud and barking and moving around. Except one. My parents passed her up at first, but there was this one beagle just standing there calm as could be. So I told them hey check this out, a beagle who is calm with all this chaos going on??? We all know hounds like to bark and bay, but she just wasn’t, so I said maybe we should think about this one. We got the shelter staff to let us take her to the meeting room, and she hopped up on my sisters lap as if she said “I choose you guys. Let’s go!” So we adopted her and she was definitely the same calm dog her whole life. She even would walk past a bunch of dogs that would bark crazy at her and not even be bothered by it. Chilliest dog I’ve ever seen.
@jamieever4046 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but some people want a specific dog breed with a specific coat colour at a much younger age. Foster dogs definitely can't match up to that in those categories, that's why I get mine from a breeder
@Breyos Жыл бұрын
@@jamieever4046 Sure and that is a valid point and good, responsible breeders are an option for those people. (Though don't let coat colour determine your choice.) But it is worth knowing that purebred dogs do end up at shelters and that unwanted litters happen all the time. It if factually false to think that only old mutts end up at shelters. Every single dog breed also has a rehoming group somewhere (often online, too) which is worth reaching out to if you are indeed set on a specific breed of dog.
@sw2291999 Жыл бұрын
I have a rescue from Romania - he is such a cool, chill guy! I never want to buy from a breeder, there are just so many amazing dogs that need a home. One exception is my second dog, I got her from a farm after their dog accidentally got pregnant - so it was not intentional and I figured that is alright. I have to say that my rescue has a much more grateful personality, though. You can really feel the difference. I love both of them, but my rescue will always have an extra special place in my heart, especially knowing what he's been through.
@Breyos Жыл бұрын
To add to this: My personal preference has always been to skip the puppy-phase. While pups are cute; anyone who's ever had one knows how much work it is to take care of one. That is why, for my home situation, I like to get a dog who's already gone past that stage and with whom I can start working immediately and can already take out on very long walks; something you wouldn't be able to do with a pup. My grandparents, for instance, are too old to get a pup. They just want a nice dog they can pet whilst watching TV and go for walks around the block with. So for them, too, a slightly older dog is absolutely ideal.

I've had two rescue dogs separately, neither of them match my personality, and both are complete opposites of each other personality wise. Another major thing I would suggest when looking to adopt is adopt a dog that's part of a rescue and lived with a foster for a number of months instead of from a shelter/kennel. My family adopted a rescue a year ago and she lived with a foster for almost a year (she gave birth to puppies and was raising them before being available for adoption). Because of this, the foster could tell potential adopters exactly what the dog's personality is like. Their quirks, if they like cuddling or if they're independent and good with dogs or kids etc

4:10 if you do get a cat, for Bear compatibility would be Siberian forest cats which are highly intelligent, have low dander quality (allergens are which can trigger are smaller with this breed) has a competitive fur coat (moulting happens twice a year) and according to pet food purveyor Purina's assessment: "Siberian cats have gentle, loving nature and well rounded personality. They adore children, -readily accept the other household pets - and get along great with the whole family. Giving them the ability to blend in and adapt to almost any family situation. Siberians have a DOG-like devotion and personality.' Sounds like a close match to me. Other breeds to consider are: * Norwegian forest cats (sweet, big, intelligent & hairy, they can be susceptible to heart & kidney diseases. These were so OG they were companions to Vikings and were enmeshed in folklore, two humongous ones pulling the Norse goddess of love Freya's chariot.) *Maine Coons (comes in a variety of colors, intelligent, looks intimidating, but are huge cuddly sweethearts, referred to commonly as gentle giants) *Turkish Angora ( there's a chocolate brown variety, they're remarkably intelligent, playful, good natured) When in doubt or just want to adopt not shop, a black cat should be considered (in spite of stigmas associated with them), as the preference for a possible brown cat expressed at 4:14 is inherent because most black cats are genetically tortoiseshell or mottled coats in disguise due to gene expression turning the coat visually black (Bombays are bred specifically to push only this gene expression). This also happens with big cats too, like panthers ( the Americas version is a black jaguar, whereas elsewhere, they're black leopards. You can tell which is which by their patterns, rosettes for jaguars, spots for leopards).

Whether you get a bear cat or another dog, I'm just glad they'll get a loving home. It always makes me sad to think of how many animals there are without them. We recently took in a dog who was left behind by his owners. He's been too nervous to do anything but lay on his bed whenever he's not outside, but he's finally starting to move around. We're still trying to get him to not slump down and become non-reactive whenever we put a leash on him, but the progress we've made so far is encouraging.

My dog Buddy (passed a couple years ago) had the same attitude as Bear. We ended up calling him a watermelon because he was just so mello and sweet. I think it's cause he felt safe and secure. I know for my family and I, when it comes to looking for rescue animals, we don't really go out actively looking for them- they seem to find us. Somehow when we have a space to fill in our house(or maybe need to make a space we didn't know we had), there's been a dog or cat looking for a home. And what's wonderful about rescue animals is that they are just so grateful to have a home, that they have always made the most loving pets. Sometimes they have problems because of past abuse or not being trained well as a puppy, but you get to work on it together and bond with them in the process. Plus you grow as a person too. So in my case it has been a total win-win. 😊

Hey Doctor Mike I have had three rescue dogs so far in my life. What you need to know is the situation that that dog has been through if you can. When you meet them in the shelter take Bear along with you to see how the dogs react, and remember all dogs can change. I have a dog that lived outside its entire life, but when I showed her love she did too.

10:36 I would recommend finding local shelters near you and going on the website. Usually they’ll have a catalog of dogs with info about their breed their shot history, medical history, and how old they are but they definitely also have a personality type and tell you if they are dog friendly or cat friendly kid friendly. And they’ll usually tell the personality and when you go in you can meet the dog and you have like a little bit of like get to know your time you get to figure it out like how the dog is if it fits with you if you guys would bond.
@danatosi1250 Жыл бұрын
Shelter pure bred dogs are not the best. Pure breeds have potential genetic issues and unless bred by a reputable breeder, which the dog wouldn’t be in a shelter if that was the case, you don’t know the genetic mutations the dog would have. If you are okay with potentially having to pay for whatever diseases or conditions the dog will have, get a pure bred at a shelter
@artemis754 Жыл бұрын
@@danatosi1250 adoption from shelters is not bad tho, those animals also deserve a home
@SidSLI Жыл бұрын
@@danatosi1250 The biggest issue is getting a pure bred dog. Even from decent breeders. The gene pool for most breeds, specially locally, is so limited that you're better off looking for a mutt.

You also can take shelter pets home for a few days or even a couple weeks before making a final decision so you can actually spend real time with them, and pets you already have, yoy can see how they get along.
@toptentidbits166 ай бұрын
In regards to getting the right rescue dog for your personality, most good rescues will have you fill out a quiz and do paperwork so that they can help you make the best possible match. Also, you can spend one on one time with dogs at the shelter before making your decision. Some shelters will also allow you to foster the dog before adoption to make sure that its the perfect match before signing the adoption papers. Hope this helps 🙂
