Meet My Tiny Rough Green Snakes! Are They Good Pets?

Do rough green snakes make good pets? Today, I show you the 4 baby reptiles I have that stay surprisingly small, always eat insects and don't need much space! With all that said, they're not great for handling, harder to find, especially captive bred, and may not be for everyone. I give my opinions and experiences with rough green snakes in this video.

@@dakotapercy4675 people who aren't pros can still do things. As long as they take into consideration the animals and don't use it purely for profit and treat them badly. No hate just explaining you don't have to be a "pro" to do things you enjoy and want to do o help a species or other people.

@itsyurmumm8458 4 жыл бұрын
Christina Garcia In that case there’s a couple rules, not that hard to follow. 1 - NO INBREEDING under ANY circumstances. 2 - Any offsprings with problems, do not breed them. 3 - if you have any knowledge on carriers of genetic diseases, any snakes born in a clutch with a snake that has genetic issues, do not breed them. When these rules are broken, repeatedly, and purposely you get morphs like spiders, or Geckos with enigma syndrome.
@blazertundra
@blazertundra 4 жыл бұрын
@@dakotapercy4675 you have to start somewhere. The pros weren't always pros and 100% of captive bred snakes have a wild caught ancestor. This species sounds like a wonderful one to start breeding with. They seem easy to breed/care for and the market needs more breeders to edge out the importers.

Those are giant day geckos (phelsuma grandis!) They make crappy pets if you like to hang out with your lizard, and from their small size, you'd think they wouldn't be able to do much damage if one bites you, but nope, that sucker took a chunk out of my thumb. Cute, but I'm not a fan of them as pets.

I have 3 rough green snakes I caught in my back yard a couple months ago. They started eating in a few days and now take crickets and grass hoppers from my fingers. They hang out in a pile (really seem to like each other) at the top of the terrarium and keep am eye on the terrarium floor. They are really cool. Next best thing to a emerald boa or green tree python, a whole lot cheaper and a whole lot easier.

I have a captive bred rough green snake and I love her so much. She's about 2 feet long. If you love snakes, but also have a soft spot of rodents, this is a great option. I would recommend if possible picking out your snake in person because I got to pick one out of 3, and only the one was not terrified of human hands. That being said I don't handle her too much just a few times a week so she stays tame. She seems clever in my opinion too, and she acts interested in her reflection if she sees a mirror. She also knows that after I handle her I feed her, so even if I haven't put the crickets in yet she starts looking for them as soon I put her away because she knows the routine. Regarding handling, you have to let the snake handle you as much as possible, if that makes sense. They will wrap around your fingers to feel secure but hate being grabbed and especially hate their heads being touched. If you try to control the snake it will freak out so relax and the snake will too.

I don't have any reptiles or amphibians right now (currently live in a small apartment and already have a dog, cat, 10g aquarium, and mice) but I'm so stoked for the day I'm able to get an adequate space to care for animals, especially frogs! I've been trying to get on board with the idea of a snake but feeding live mice seemed a bit much to me, so I really like that this species can really live off a diet of insects, and the small size and vivid green color is appealing too!

Just saw a baby rough green snake for the first time when I was trimming a small bush. So beautiful!! Wanted to hold him but I didn't! I left him alone.

The movement, intelligence and feeding response seems more similar to a garter. Neat snakes

I don't know why KZbin started suggesting your videos to me, im not a reptile person, I don't dislike them or anything but I'm ignorant about them. That said I have enjoyed your videos and your educational style and humor. Thank you! 😊

A smooth green snake like this hitched a ride in my van when I was 12. We unpacked our tent and gear two weeks after we got home and found this little guy. He had some lacerations on his body and was missing the tip of his tail. In the two weeks it had gotten much colder and the camping spot we had found him was 6 hours away. I decided to home him over the winter. I think he was elderly as he had a hard time eating crickets so I decided I would keep him for the remainder of his life. He lived two years with me and he was my first pet snake. His name was soapy as we found him packed up with some soap lol. Best little guy

I love these dudes. I held one for the first time in my high school ecology class years ago and he was so tiny and cute. Plus his mouth was too small to bite me lol
