There is something about the sea that calls to certain people. My family lived for generations on the wild west coast of Ireland but I was raised in a housing estate far from Manchester and didn't even see the ocean until I was a teenager. My family moved to NZ and I took up surfing, it has changed my life and living by the ocean just feels right to me. In my more sentimental moments I like to think I have a genetic memory for the ocean as I feel like I'm home even though I'm on the other side of the word.

It’s like breeds of working dogs. They can be pups and know what to do. I think genetic memory is a thing.

this video makes me so proud to be a New Zealander. Even though I'm from the US. I love when surfers have depth. In my experiences in NZ it isn't surprising to hear these people talk of humility and giving back. It is a rare and special place where people scratch their heads with authentic puzzlement at how up our asses we in the fast-paced modern world of wealth and me me me we can get.

There are hundreds of kids who are as good or better than this guy. In surfing, it's not about how good you are, it's about who you know. Surfing is more crooked than politics. 😮

Dunno how many times I've heard this bullshit in my life. Kiwis Never do well on the tour......They hardly even make the tour. All talk. Only kiwi to walk the talk and make something of himself was Alan Byrne 40 years ago. Always a big fish in a little pond. Joke.
