Lydia - please please change that pen for the chickens. The fox will kill them in no time. You need a thick gauge wire as foxes easily eat through chicken wire. It needs either concrete slabs all the way round the perimeter or you need to dig the enclosure down at least 15inches else a fix will dig under it. And lastly, it needs a roof, not only for the safety of the chickens but in a few weeks it will be bird flu season and by law, any chickens MUST be kept under cover. I am sure you and Ali would be devastated if something happened to them, so a little research and changes to their home would help them no end.
@lindaburrows4724
@lindaburrows4724 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you I had 20 chickens and ducks you really have to fox proof them 💯 roof’s concrete base high fence and we had steel wire over the whole pen which was at least 20ft long . I never lost a bird to foxes in 10 years foxes can climb very high and dig under and they will if they want them 😢

@@lindaburrows4724 same - people don’t realise how persistent foxes can be even with a very secure enclosure. I’ve done everything to ensure my chickens are safe and never lost one. I’m worried for them especially as they’ve filmed foxes in the garden before.

Omg…. I don’t think they did enough research…. Otherwise the pen would have been done properly from the very beginning, with wire on the top of the pen. I know of people that even double wire the pen. Foxes are very persistent and they even work on schedule ….. they will come to the area every day around the same time. They have strong jaws and teeth that can cut through wire….and they can also jump pretty high and the can dig pretty deep.

We got our chickens last month and it has just been the BEST feeling. The first night leaving them was so anxiety inducing when we started to think about Mr Fox...But thankfully that anxiety reduced for us night by night. I would recommend getting a stronger wire for your chicken fence, as the one you have the foxes can actually bite through (people in the next village from us lost 30+ chickens in one night after the fox ate straight through their chicken wire fence like yours) They recommend you opt for thicker galvanised steel wire mesh which they can't bite through. We opted for the thicker galvanised steel wire mesh around our coop for their run and then opted for a 50 meter electrified chicken fence to keep mr fox away during their free ranging time during the day. Just thought I'd pass on the advice we were given 🙂Enjoy every second!

It’s hard to introduce new chickens to a flock when they’re grown up hens because they can be really violent to the newbies and seriously hurt them. Chicks don’t have a pecking order yet so it’s so much easier to form a flock of babies. I tried to add 3 new chicks to a flock of 3 hens and it just never worked. The hens were basically hunting the chicks. I think the best method is to wait for a hen to get broody and then stick fertile eggs under her so she can raise and protect the chicks from the other girls. But hopefully your flock is new enough that they can re-establish the pecking order and integrate the new girls

Hello Mrs Lydia! Hope you are enjoying your chickens! I’m a chicken mom of 20+ years…just some advice when adding new chickens to your flock make sure to quarantine the new ones for a week or so then introduce..that will keep the girls healthy! Also, I would suggest a different pen with stronger wire make sure to place the wire at least 18inches into the ground (predators will dig under then fencing)and make sure the wire covers the top completely to avoid owls/hawks/raptors etc. Enjoy!

Lydia, new chickens should be introduced to the flock at night when the girls are quite and settled in. Put the new girls up on the roost and the old guard will allow they to join, because at night they will stay quiet and calm so as not to attract predators. Also, roost should be up off the floor of the coop about 21/2 feet. I had a Henny Penny, she was a Golden Comet and regularly laid eggs weighing 108 grams!

Lydia don't throw away the courgette flowers as they are delicious to eat! Look up for recipes, my favorite is to chop them roughly and put them into a quiche or with courgette as a pasta sauce. Even better, you can fill them with ricotta and fry them, delicious!

Keep an eye out for the one who is getting a little close for comfort with the other ones. Believe it or not, chickens can actually be quite viscous to one another if they are upset with the behavior of a "coup mate". They will peck (usually in its behind) to the point of significant injury if they are annoyed enough.

Lydia, you can eat the courgette flowers. There are great recipies for them. You can fill them with a ricotta cheese stuffing and just roast them in a pan with olive oil in the oven or on the stove and have champagne with them. Chef’s kiss! Simple, but delicious. I‘m sure you will find a great recipe online! I was spontaneously invited by a couple in Haut de Cagnes on the Côte d‘Azur one day when I was travelling on my own trying to find a house my parents rented when I was small. I got to talk with a couple just arriving to their house and we had those filled courgette flowers on their roof terrace with excellent champagne. I didn‘t know them at all, they were charming….Love the names of your chicken….By the way…will you order the fabric from the sofa in the lobby of the hotel in Madrid? I had researched it, it is MARLY from Scalamandré and comes in 4 shades. Am so curious to know if you will go for it.

I’m certain every time I wear white linen, it’s inevitable that I will get spots of oil and sauce all over them 😊 Your chickens are absolutely lovely…I must say though that I agree with Ali that Snow White is a better name than Snowdrop, even if it’s a little Disney esque, Snow White was originally part of Grimm’s Fairy Tales from Germany, not Disney and the story is more complex and interesting than one would imagine…
