Barbary or Atlas lions got so huge and were known for this because of the climate. Living at higher elevations and more northwards of deserts. But lions sizes (as with most animals) depends on climate, environment, and diet. This is why even in parts of Subsaharan Africa you can get pretty huge lions in specific areas. And this is why sometimes captive born / raised lions seem a bit larger than wild lions since they have less stress and better diets but also due to being captive in colder or more northern regions. Fun fact: climate and environment can also lead to lions in certain regions having different behaviors. Such as having smaller prides or being solitary like most big cats or being more matriarchal led.
