The rook is extremely important in chess strategy. It isn't usually the final strike piece, but can be exceptionally useful in cornering the king so the queen or bishop make the final strike. So if the narrative follows, in a way, chess rules, this should be a very powerful narrative for the game.

A rook is also a bird in the Corvid family, and so, my tinfoil take is that the character is an Antivan Crow because rooks are seen as omens of death and suffering in real world folklore. An assassin protagonist would be absolutely perfect for a narrative following chess rules because of the fact trapping and eliminating marks is their trade. In Celtic mythology, rooks transport souls between this world and the next as cosmic messengers. Also, across Norse legends, Odin, the god of death, had two ravens and two rooks who acted as his eyes and ears and offered him mystical insights to guide humans. Lastly, in Japan, rooks delivered messages from the spirit realm to oracles. Many cultures revere the rook as a spirit ambassador traversing dimensions, and so, this potentially means a character boasting a connection to The Fade in the game, perhaps even being a Dreamer.

Who would the queen or bishop be though? The Inquisitor? Maybe we'll be in an Oblivion-esque position where the Dreadwolf protagonist isn't the one who actually ends Solas and his plans but instead aids the actual "important person" to do so.

Everyone's getting hung up on the chess piece, I think a lot of people are missing the fact that a "rook" is also another name for crow. I've no doubt the name has layers of meaning, but I wouldn't be surprised it it's the character's actual surname, like Hawke was. Hawke = bird surname, Rook = bird surname. It fits.

Honestly I prefer it as a name! I mean, Hawke also goes by Champion, so we can still get a title nickname AND Rook just like we did with them. Besides, we dont know when in the game this cutscene takes place, but if the subtitles are consistent throughout the game, why would we, someone Bioware has said is a nobody with no power, have a title and be referred to with it instead of just our surname? Again- it's just like Hawke! They're called by their surname all of Act 1 and 2 because they aren't important enough to have a title yet.

I'm not gonna lie, seeing a leak about the game is just making me want to replay the whole series all over again. The Rook as a title for our character just sounds so cool! And the chess metaphor?? Oh my god, I'm so excited! To me, I feel like the King on Solas' side of the board is Flemythal, not Solas, and that he's instead the Queen. Flemythal is playing Solas like a puppet to get him to go around and make big moves against the resistance while she does stuff in the background. Maybe she'll try to get the rest of her pieces all together again and use Solas' body as a vessel for her power? Who knows! This is just my little theory about it though! That’s what I was thinking. Flemythal is not done yet and she has been working behind the scenes for a long time now, and Solas is directly or indirectly working with her. She is the puppeteer and Solas is her puppet. How this all ends is yet to be seen.

Also, another comparison/cross referece involving towers, Solas and Tarot cards (if not simple and obvious, since tarot cards are very present when one thinks of DA:I). in Tarot, the Tower (loosely speaking) represents a literal end, the destruction of a firmly settled structure, and the need to face that defeat, that obliteration, to start over and go forward. That's very fitting, considering what Solas did in the past and what he's aiming to do to Thedas at the moment!

The saddest thing about Solas’s story is that if he accomplished what he set out to do it would make him the Biggest hypocrite ever. He started this journey trying to free his people from powerful mages playing god only for him to be the one playing god trying to fix his mistake. The problem is the Evanuris were too strong to kill directly, so him blocking out the fade has unintended consequences. 5:05 "...involves the king and the rook to checkmate" It's not really a game ender. Castling's purpose is to get the king out of the center columns and into a more protected position, while putting the rook in a more mobile and threatening position (as rooks start in the corners, but the middle squares of the board are where you want to exert the most threat and control.)

Regarding the rook/tower connection, I also like that the tarot card for the Tower generally (not an expert though so correct me if I'm wrong) means change, often unexpected or destructive or on a large scale... Which I think would fit with what we currently know about DA:D's supposed main conflict. Also, all my canon protags have bird-related names (Hawke counts as double lol), so it's weirdly validating to have that being their nickname/title heh

Ah, not Rook, anything but that, it just sounds played. I just hope we’re not constantly being belittled or treated like we know nothing after just wiping an army out solo. That being said, I hope they still allow us to pick our race again and give that a bit more depth. I liked being a Qunari and actually having that matter somewhat, as well as being a Knight-Enchanter (which was busted). I’d also like for them to keep the tapestry. So we can actually have our choices matter from the previous games. In my playthrough of Inquisition, Solas was a lot more mournful about doing what he had to do and wanted to genuinely be shown differently. Plus, my Inquisitor held the Inquisition together and was still one of the most powerful people on the planet.

If this is true, then it's likely our character has some degree of criminal heritage in their background. Which calls into question to which degree we will be able to customize that aspect. I was a fan of the origin stories in, well, Origins. In tarot, I would look to the Moon and the Star to counter the Tower. The Moon uses illusions or darkness to hide something and The Star is a card of hope. I still believe ancient enemies of the elvanuris will have a role to play in this grand Chess game.

The one thing i dont know i agree with here is the chess game between bull and solas. The moves and sacrifices there are moreso a nod to "the immortal game." I think the inclusion of so many chess elements definitely could be a nod to our character in the next installment and to the mental games solas played. It could, however, be a nod to both, since they chose that specific game and decided to have solas play that specific role in it

Tbh at 1:50 the inquisitor *doesn't* have a magical hand anymore. Unless they're a mage I suppose but they're no longer just a handy dandy, just down a hand. That being said, the inquisitor being the *hero* recruiting the new character I think is a good idea. Down a hand can be a fairly big handicap when you're fighting and it would make sense to get someone who Solas isn't familiar with

Well now I'm thinking about Solas and iron bull playing chess in their head. Also the tactical thinking from Solas makes sense to me. I mean I believe Solas is a spirit of valor. The opposite of valor being dread as in dread wolf. Which would be why the Evanuris called him that as a Insult.

Inquisitor was ok as a title/name but constantly being called Inquisitor felt pretentious or too formal. And being called the Warden felt too impersonal. Like, there are many wardens. So being referred to as Warden wasnt very special.

This ties in so neatly with what I think will be our role be. Given the end of Trespasser and the general game, it would make very little sense to have the option to disband the inquisition or not and if to spare solas or if to hunt him if the inquisition wouldn't have some part to play in the next game (plus the part where Leliana says that Solas knows their very move to which our Inky replies that they then have to get people in that he doesn't know) At all. So thus I am 90% sure that you are working for the inquisition or ur working ur way into solas ranks as some sort of spy for the inquisition

I'm speculating they already have the script and story for this game done and are in the process of fleshing it out and polishing it. They made sure the veterans stuck around long enough to do that before they got rid of so many people.....Im still skeptical of how good the game will be regardless, but Im more concerned about the future prospects. If this game doesn't kill the franchise, they will try for the final installment. They claim they were aiming for 5 games. I'm more worried about the writing for the next game. Starting fresh, with no veterans to back them up.

Very far off theory (I'm not sure if this has been done before) but connecting the strategy of sacrificing his two rooks during the mental chess match, what if one of the rooks is our hero and the other was someone close? It would be kinda interesting if not only is our hero aiming to bring Fen'harel down for the sake of Thedas, but if they were also doing it to avenge a loved one.

Personally, I think "Rook" is referring to the type of bird. Especially if the Antivan crows are involved in Dreadwolf in some way. -Rooks are much more social than crows, rarely being seen alone. In a city like Tevinter, the "Rook" would be able to blend into the crowds unnoticed. -In the Dreadwolf teaser trailer, assuming that the character atop the buildings was the "Rook", this could be more symbolism as rooks tend to nest in high up places. -Rookery (communal rook nest) is another term for slums. Specifically a dense collection of housing. That's just what I've noticed that ties into the trailer. And since Solas is tied to the tower tarot, it's worth mentioning that the rook chess peice was also at one point called the tower. So it's possible that "Rook" could refer to both Solas and the player.

@@emodante1084 I agree, that’s one of the few problems I had with Dragon Age 2. Sure Hawke is a pretty good character on his/her own, but I want to play as an City Elven Refugee who spent his/her life in Lothering being persecuted by the humans, or a Surface Dwarf Refugee who was exiled from Orzimmar because some stupid noble crap, or hell, A Qunari soldier who was ship wrecked along with the Arishok, but broke away in order to investigate Kirkwall. Hell, in Dragon Age Origins, I wanted to play as a Qunari Warden, but then again, there’s not many Qunari in Fereldan anyway. At least Inquisition gave us the opportunity to play as a Qunari, although they should have done a lot better with the horns and hair customization.

I mean I get that humans are pretty much dominant in Thedas, but in Origins you really felt more like a part of the world since the origin stories had so much variety. I wonder if u start as a rook working with solas. And u get sacrificed by him to save his cause and r saved by the inquisition. Then u start working as a spy for the inquisition

Maybe it was just somebody referring to a new soldier as rook, short for rookie 🤷‍♂️
