While it is true that parental age does increase the risk of genetic alterations, the risk at her age for Down syndrome was only 1%. While important to note that the risk drastically increases with age, that risk is still small and worth it for beautiful people who still want to expand their families. I personally don’t believe a 1% risk would deter me in the same situation and having an informed choice with real numbers. That’s 100 out of 10,000 births per the data. Knowing the reference information is the most important part to determining how severe a number or percentage a actually is and how to use it to make decisions. I also want to point out that her age was not necessarily the reason for the genetic alterations. This can and does happen with parents who are barely 20, though less than a 1% chance. In fact, most situations we know were not due to the family having 40yr old or older parents…and yes, the father’s age can play a role in genetic alterations.

From one mother with a special needs child to another, I solute Ms. Stephanie. My son, age 32-has autism. When the world said how I said why not!!! When the physician said impossible I said it shall be done! My son, my best friend, my role model was also born legally blind. Yet God! His strength, Gods glory… my son leads me to light when there is darkness. Special needs, most beautiful gift from God. Focusing on the ability rather than the disabilities has made our lives much easier than one could imagine.

I think Stephanie Mills is one of the realest singers in the business, in the past and today. I remember in 1993 I was 14 and my parents took me and my brothers to see The Wiz at the Beacon Theater in New York City. I thought that Stephanie Mills looked like a little girl throughout the whole play! I really enjoyed The Wiz!
