In case helpful to everyone, I wrote up these notes / timestamps for this video -- just b/c I keep coming back to it and wrote these up to remember where he teaches certain things -- here they are in case helpful! - Strumming 5:21 - pick stuff starts - Being relaxed while you strum - Soft pick vs. firm pick - Dynamics: swell crescendo / diminuendo - "Oasis chords" 19:00 - "Folk" version of G (ring and pinky) - Simple hammer ons - Picking strings individually - Variations of each chord - "Lift a finger off, see how it sounds" - "If it sounds good, go with it" - Barre chords (29:30) - Bm - A - G (starting with those - "learn those notes") - "E shape" barre chord - All along the watchtower - 34:00 - working out your front thumb muscle, getting sore, taking a break, building the strength - 34:50 - Song Analysis - Picking the chords for the bridge of a song - Adding a bridge before the final chorus - "palette cleanser" before going back to the chorus so the final recognizable, memorizable chorus hits harder - Analytzing song structure of songs you love - just name things yourself - Verse - Chorus - Verse - Chorus - Bridge - Verse - Chorus - "The pop stop" - Layering, playing with other musicians

Justin, these recorded private lessons are so interesting and motivational. Tammy should be commended for allowing her playing to be put on the Internet like this. She seems like an excellent student and I look forward to seeing how she progresses. I've been going slowly and carefully through your beginner course. I cannot thank you enough. II bought my first guitar approx.30 years ago. The guitar shop recommended I purchase a Charvel Jackson acoustic. Back then living in the desert, no phone, no TV . I practised for hours on end, strumming was my nemesis. I would practise often for maybe 5 -6 hours. It was so frustrating I couldn't play a song. This year I made it my goal to learn to play a song lol... 30 years of playing and finally, all that practice paid off. Every time I pick it up I'm making advances. I'm so glad I never gave up. Persistence:) The old vintage Charvel Jackson plays so beautifully after all these years. The strings have only been changed once, better get them changed lol... You are a brilliant teacher, you are so thorough in how you explain things. Thankyou so much :)

I have now watched many of your videos withTammy. Also watched many of your videos working with the Captain. I don't know why, but these have been some of the most helpful instruction videos I have ever seen. It is so much different than when the material is just presented. Having a student changes everything. Tammy is near the beginning and the Captain has years behind him. The captain has clearly settled into a box and watching you push him out of that box is amazing. Tammy, often goes blank just like I do (I am a beginner at the age of 67). The methods you use to keep her moving are really great. Like Tammy and the Captain I am really having a rough time getting strings 5 and 6 memorized. I feel a bit better that after years of playing the Captain is right there with myself and Tammy. Not all who can play can teach you are among those who can. Great stuff.

It is so nice to see that you are still the kind, patient, really-want-to-help, caring guy as always. I love your instructions, always very clear and made as simple, straight-forward as possible. But maybe equal to that, keep coming back because you seem like such a nice guy. Thank you for all your hard work. Cheers.

The 5 minute practice actually makes sense. If we take the average time of a song it's about 5 minutes and normally bands seem to play a song or two and then have a break and talk. Thanks for this, I'll be incorporating this into my practice routine.

This is fantastic. Props to Tammy for being brave enough to have public lessons for the whole world to see. As much as I like The Captain's Privates, I think Tammy's lessons are much closer to where I am as a guitar player, so these will hopefully be a lot more valuable to me at the moment. Lee's lessons are a bit too advanced and bluesy for me at the moment. Keep up the great work! :D

With regards to choosing chords for a bridge, you could start off with a tritone substitution, which is just a fancy word for minor fifth. For example, if your song is in G, then you start the bridge in Db and work from there. It works because the tritone substitution of a chord sounds kinda similar but refreshing at the same time. Helps "cleanse the palette" :)

This would have to be the best guitar lesson on KZbin. It covers so much. I’m glad I learnt the folk style G chord as well as the regular G chord. It was hard at the start, but now it’s the one I use most of the time. Mainly when I’m going between G and C. It was great how Justin explains why it’s a great finger position. I’m so glad I’ve watched this.

These private lessons on your channel are a great thing, nice to see them expanding into different styles, or personalities as well. Other guitar teachers out there should be thanking you for advertising 'guitar lessons' in general, and for what an average student can expect.. especially to see any progression or evolution in the player. On a really simple level.. it's also just cool to have these kind of musical conversations in general. Two people who enjoy music or how it works.. talking together for an hour.. with social media, the phone, TV or whatever else turned off.. lots of positives in that.

Justin, I wish I would've had you as a teacher when I first started guitar. I just tried to teach myself when I was a teenager from a few books and watching other people play. There's so much stuff I should've learned in those first few years that I have a hard time learning now because I learned them the wrong way.

This was really great. I feel like there are key things in this lesson that I can focus on, rather than feeling so overwhelmed by the vast ocean of my ignorance, and then feeling too distracted/disheartened to focus at all.

Excellent Justin. Tammy's much nicer to watch then Lee...and seems to make far less excuses :-)

You sir are a freaking legend!! I joined a couple of jams early on when my guitar playing was suffering because I wasn’t progressing on my own. In Camden Town (London) there is a fella that is as generous as you called Whiskey Mick, I was quite nervous first time but he is so kind and everyone is so nice, and plays different instruments. I’ve been going most weeks ever since. My guitar playing skills increased tenfold, it becomes quite addictive too, which keeps you motivated to keep practicing. If anyone is looking for a good, friendly jam, it’s Wednesdays at The Old Eagle and Thursdays at Tapping the Admiral in Camden, open to anyone playing anything really. Or Monday’s at King William IV near Hampstead station, that’s an invite session but it’s heart-meltingly good. Thanks for your lessons dude!

loving this new thread Justin, as with Lee, really shows your skills as a teacher, but it really carries over as a video for everyone at every level to watch and learn from , as previously stated, very Brave of Tammy , well done :)

Picking for me at the start was horrible. I was scared that I would break the strings or I could drop the pick accidentally. Gradually over some time I managed to get my picking right (I used a thin pick at start .38 I think and now I play with 1.14mm thick). PS: I am playing guitar for about 6 months. I still enjoy this video because I learned a lot and that everyone went through this "struggle" not only me :) Thank you for the lesson Justin. Keep up the good work.

I like this type of lesson because we see anything that Tammy is doing wrong and how to fix it. Without the student there you would tell/show us what the correct/best way. (You do explain why) Cheers Rob (Melb. Aust.)

Wow! This is so very helpful. I've been playing guitar for 30 years and I still found benefit from just this first of Tammy's lessons. Great job explaining these basics in detail. I'm going to work on some of these very basics that I've let go sloppy over the years. And great questions from Tammy as well!!! Best of luck in your journey.

Really like this format (as an addition to your already great instructional videos). One suggestion: sometimes you said to her, "Just move your second finger HERE." but it was unclear from the camera angle. ? Maybe you could say, "Just move your second finger here (on the 2nd fret of the B string)." so that even if we can't see it we can still follow where "here" is??

A great idea, letting us sit in on Tammy's lessons. I'm looking forward to watching her grow as a musician, and I know I'll pick up a bunch of good stuff myself. More!

Nice video. I use 0.60 mm picks. When using a amp with an acoustic guitar, i find a pick less than that is great , as they are smother. Of course one can use the higher settings for picks. I use dunlop picks with grips on them as my fingers get sweaty and I lost grip. Good video keep it up

These private lessons are a treasure. I'd love to see that on other skill levels, like mid-advanced, cause it was more of a curiosity for someone who's played for a while now.
