I actually think that the Stepien rule is a good rule. It helps prevent franchises from getting royally fleeced when they have terrible owners/executives.

1 Survivor yeah and in a league where there are so many small market teams, you need to put something exciting on the court to maintain interest.

@@kohsmoger1567 True. But only so much can be done to protect teams from terrible GMs like Billy King 😂 We would see more terrible trades like that Nets-Celtics trade if it weren't for the Stepien rule.
@B92LG6 жыл бұрын
I also think the rule is a good rule, but I would think it should be modified a little bit. Currently, as a result of the Stepien rule, teams are allowed to trade a maximum of 4 own picks in the upcoming 7 drafts. They are not allowed to reach further in the future. So I think, you could modify the rule to exactly that. Over any 7-year-span, a team is only allowed to trade away 4 of their own picks, but they are completely free to decide in which of those 7 years. That actually would make sense for either side of a multi-pick-trade. A team giving up picks for a veteran player might be more likely to send away their picks from 2019-2022 (while also making their picks 2023-2025 untradeable), because they have the plan to "win now" and they don't risk their long-time future. On the other hand, a team rebuilding and thus far sending away a veteran for picks might (!) favor 4 probably late first-rounders from 2019-2022 to fasten their rebuild. But the more interesting part of this is that trading picks gets a lot more interesting because at the recieving end, you could ask for the picks you think have the best value while still managing to settle the deal. Take 4 picks the next 4 years and just accept that they will very likely be late picks? Or maybe gamble on the other team falling apart in the near future and gain some picks three years down the road that might be higher? I think with that, the teams gain a lot of flexibility while the sense of the rule still stands.

the NBA should not get rid of the Stepien rule, rather tweak it to where pick swaps should not be allowed if the team already gave its first round pick the year before.
@mikevismyelement6 жыл бұрын
The Stepien rule is necessary. The NBA has so many restrictions and player interests in free agency that it's a complete crapshoot whether or not you can even get talent in free agency from year to year without overpaying and screwing it up just as bad
@shawnweddle30026 жыл бұрын
The Cavs essentially received 5 players in exchange for all their draft picks from 1982-1986. That "desire to put a winning team on the floor" got the Cavs Mike Bratz, Don Ford, Richard Washington, Jerome Whitehead, and Geoff Huston. Zero All-star appearances. Ted Stepien knew nothing about basketball and acted alone on these trades. Successful NBA front offices are a collaborative effort. Stepien would just fire anyone who told him his ideas were bad. Keep the Stepien Rule or adjust it slightly for playoff teams. The Warriors trading their next three 1st round picks isn't as big of a deal as if the Knicks did.

I like the rule as a means to protect the greater interest the league has in keeping the values of all franchises high and continuously rising. This also promotes a better product on the court for fans.
@edwardmerriam69706 жыл бұрын
Added context - the NBA was in a more precarious position in the early 80s so they really couldn't afford to let a team collapse. It would have been a disaster that could have set back the league, hence why the Cavs were bailed out.
@charliejames19816 жыл бұрын
The rule you had mentioned should stay I mean it prevents the massive trades of picks just because a team wants to win a ring right now ex: Brooklyn Nets. The Brooklyn Nets are now climbing out of that trade from hell situation made by Billy King. I can't imagine any other team cashing all their draft picks for ring that might not come to them at all... The NBA talks about every team having somewhat a chance on fulfilling a championship at some point in a teams existence and say they remove the rule then you would see many teams either holding onto their picks tightly or stockpiling them like the Celtics... Yes I'm still sore about the trade between BK/BOS ...Stupid asf trade.

The rule makes sense because if u trade a bunch of your picks, and something happens where ur team sucks, the team that u traded with will essentially be really stacked because they will get all the top picks that the other team is suppose to have while they suck for years, whereas having if alternate years will at least help the bad team get out of their slump and hopefully only give like a 12th pick rather than a 5th.

So he fired Chuck Daly, traded Laimbeer, and traded away the draft pick that became Dennis Rodman. The Pistons should have sent him a championship ring.

6:10 There's "no way this would happen today" DUE to the changes in rules/mindset. Teams are independent business, but the NBA has a "duty of care" for ALL of its members - Cavs driving down the cost of their organisation via bad management/decisions is a negative for the "NBA".
