My next door neighbour is Greek and she married an Italian, wonderful guy called Lorenzo. When the Greek and Italian families got together for the wedding, which was in London, it was an unforgettable party. We danced Zorba and sung O Solo mio, and the wine flowed !! What was also amazing was how well our old grandparents, who could only speak either Italian or Greek, had no problem communicating with each other using facial expressions and hand movements !!

I worked in Greece for three months and later dated a Greek man for seven years, mixing with his family and community, and yet never once heard anyone calling out "Opa!". I suppose they exaggerated aspects of the culture for comedic purposes but it does lead to others believing it's all real. Rather like films showing Englishmen saying "Jolly good show!" (which they generally don't) and Australians talking about wallabies and kangaroos etc. in their regular slang (not true).
