My next door neighbour is Greek and she married an Italian, wonderful guy called Lorenzo. When the Greek and Italian families got together for the wedding, which was in London, it was an unforgettable party. We danced Zorba and sung O Solo mio, and the wine flowed !! What was also amazing was how well our old grandparents, who could only speak either Italian or Greek, had no problem communicating with each other using facial expressions and hand movements !!

It's a common response you get over here if you talk about other countries doing things better than you, because we still have a pretty big ego. One guy at the bus station was asking why the bus was taking too long to arrive, and I told him this is Greece and not Norway, and he responded with that.

*Same!* I’m epileptic and could _never_ leave the house, because of seizures. 😖 So, I couldn’t meet people. (And this was before online dating was “normal.”) Most my family members met their significant others at very early ages, so it wasn’t looking very good for me at family events. I worked in Greece for three months and later dated a Greek man for seven years, mixing with his family and community, and yet never once heard anyone calling out "Opa!". My ex was annoyed by that part of the film, as he said that Greek people just didn't say it that much. Maybe it's a Greek/Canadian/American thing?

mannythegreek That's exactly what my partner said. I don't remember any spitting either, come to think of it. I suppose they exaggerated aspects of the culture for comedic purposes but it does lead to others believing it's all real. Rather like films showing Englishmen saying "Jolly good show!" (which they generally don't) and Australians talking about wallabies and kangaroos etc. in their regular slang (not true).
