i wonder if the people who usually make those machines... the stupidly complicated ones... see this and will say "oh man why didnt we think of this" or "ah shit they figured it out"
@psychobotLoL9 жыл бұрын
+Hunter Rodrigez Yeah but something just designed is always bad. Ofcourse good designer can make good product in first try. But in second try it will always be better. Just look at stuff around you. Everything evolves. Someone created something. People were using it. Found what is missing. Basing on that knowledge they upgraded it. Then again. Maybe they made it perfect but it is possible than in about year or two they will find next way to make it even easier in use and they you will say same thing. You just doesn't see now what is it missing. Some already did and you can find their thoughts above in comments. So they will probably say "oh man why didnt we think of this", but glowforge can say it in the future too.

DrawDeath Dude we had this technology for decades and yet most machines like that (like automated drills for example) are still based on a stupidly complicated programming language instead of a visual interface... And if some designer who just thought it would be a cool idea to make this simpler can do it you can bet your ass that the people who make those machines can do it too... They can probably do it even better

You don't need CAM software to use a lasercutter. Lasercutters are extremely easy to get into: You simply draw in whatever vector software you want and the machine will cut it. It's as easy as it gets. This only adds layers of abstraction to it for unnecesary reasons... Furthermore making it dependent on their services, rather than a stand alone machine. What we REALLY need is a cheap affordable and safe lasercutter with no fuzz. This is the opposite of that, sadly.
@webosm64949 жыл бұрын
Put all the cloud processing into a PC and i will be a customer. The features are great. Cloud, not so much. Processing power is currently so cheap it does not need to be in the cloud. With some effort you could probably get it into a raspberry pi, increasing the price of the laser cutter with about 40US$. Cloud is great for websites, smartphone apps etc. Once you have a machine that needs to produce to get your investment back you need everything tightly connected with the least number of points of failures. Internet has the largest amount of failure points, from your own router to the isp's to all the nodes in between. I run a 1300x1000mm laser cutter and guess what all the computing power has been done on a PC. The laser just interprets some gcode. The concept is not new. The aligning is. Could probably be made as an add-on for existing laser cutters.

Also what is up with their laser continiously causing flames? That's not actually normal, looks like it has a huge kerf. How are you going to get replacement grids? There's a reason lasercutters have large air filtration units and cooling circulation, they are dangerous machines (Seeing an open laser tube is not a nice sight). What magically makes this unit not need any of that? Where are the toxic gasses going? Even WITH air filters it still needs to have an escape, you can't just keep building up and circulating such gasses. Drawing on the material is a software function, but not even illustrator does vector translation from drawings perfectly, so why would this software do? Why is there no way of just running it locally? "It allows us to make it better over time" Or the opposite: Once you go bankrupt your machine is USELESS because you can't run it. "Fixed Alignment" as a feature? Adjustable alignment machines also are factory calibrated, but ANY machine will EVENTUALLY run out of calibration when moving or being involved with heat. Not being able to calibrate it just means it will slowly lose accuracy, rather than just being able to be adjusted. This had promise, but way way way too much seems to be based on gimmicks, fancy design rather than a purpose built tool that you can keep up and running. "People keep watching because it's cool", what? It's important to keep continious vision, things can always go bad. You have a camera built in, great, why don't you use it for more useful things such as fire detection?

If you look at the flame it's very still. In my experience flames from laser cutting are made erratic from the turbulence of the air extraction. My guess is that they shut off the air for audio reasons. I could be wrong though.

@JackOfHobbies9 жыл бұрын
+Toni Lähdekorpi I don't think that is as big an issue as you might think. If for some reason Google stopped doing cloud hosted computing, you could still take the virtual servers and move them to a different provider (Amazon, Microsoft, etc.), or Glowforge could work up to hosting their own servers if they started getting big. Cloud hosting is very flexible and will be around for the foreseeable future.
9 жыл бұрын
Caleb Brant I wasn't talking about the hosting itself (I'm a sysadmin...), but rather the company. If the company owns all rights to the software running in the virtual machine, containers or whatever, we can't use it if they stop supporting it. The only option in that case would be to either for them to release it for the public to use on their own servers, or for someone to reverse-engineer everything and recreate it. Not supporting old hardware and software is very common these days. It even happens with random consumer electronics. For example, Philips stopped manufacturing a HEPA filter for my vacuum cleaner after just a couple of years. Nobody is even selling a compatible filter... The same happens with software.

@Spirit5329 жыл бұрын
+Michael Grinshtat Judging by the price of the machine and the price of these tubes(which are not "custom" by the way), I'd estimate about 200 hours continuous cutting, then the power will drop down or the tube will just refuse to ignite. Each tube of that power is around $200. And if you can manage to align it yourself after a reinstall with those shitty plastic clamps, you should have made a laser cutter yourself a long time ago.
@lemondropmemories8 жыл бұрын
This definitely shows up Sillouette and Cricut, but it's 10X the price those die cut machines cost. It's still reasonable for what it can do ($2,300+), but seesh, it makes sense for someone who plans to use this for their business, but someone who is a casual crafter or even a serious crafter, I don't think this is the best purchase.

10 thousandth of an inch for walnut or something....what did he mean by that? 10/1000 inch = 1/4 mm = 0.254 mm. Does that mean that the laser cuts away a quarter of an inch with each pass? To cut deeper it would need several passes?

Love the idea at first glance... Whats to prevent this thing from becoming a useless brick when they potentially go under? Or they could decide that they no longer want to put money in keeping the servers up-to-date as tech on the computer or iPad changes? It requires internet access to use, which is not big as long as they are still around. No thanks. That is why the more expensive ones are better. This is making it more of a potential disposable piece of equipment. It still costs to much for it to potentially be useless after 3 years. ROI is still important and this is very risky. Love his obvious excitement about it. Seems to really have a passion for it. But until I can do it all on my local computer like with my 3D printer I am not going to buy into it. Cloud is not the answer for this kind of tech.

My theory about the "cloud software" bit is that they're trying to forestall cheap Chinese clones. Glowforge can authenticate the machine connecting to their software, so a clone would be crippled. If so, it's a doomed strategy, because lots of people could stick a cheap camera or two on a sub $1K laser cutter and add some simple software to follow lines. That's what most people will care about, and they won't notice subtleties like the fact that the Glowforge has autofocus (unlike most cheap laser cutters) or a nice, sharp TEM00 laser. The only benefit the buyer gets from these software shenanigans is to help keep Glowforge in business for a little longer so their cutter doesn't get bricked quite so quickly. Glowforge says they're going to "release the firmware" (presumably, they mean the source code), but only some teeny tiny percentage of the machine's buyers would be able to make any use of that when the cloud part permanently goes down (which, make no mistake about it, will happen sooner or later). For everyone else, they'll have an expensive table decoration unless someone starts selling replacement software (probably should have kept that idea to myself...). I've already been burned a couple of times by buying into hardware that requires remote server ("cloud") support--never again, except for those cases where it's obviously necessary, as with cellphones. The good thing about Glowforge is that they'll get everyone thinking about line-tracking laser cutters, so before long there will be a flood of add-ons for existing cutters that will provide this function, even if most of them are crap. For example, the huge tattoo industry could be a major consumer of these things ("Want me to turn your ink tattoo into something really badass? Stick your arm into this box."). I hope Dan Shapiro comes to his senses and finds a fix for this serious flaw in his business model, because he seems like a sincere and intelligent guy and I'd truly like for him to succeed. The world needs a product like this, and if you can believe their marketing it looks like Glowforge has the wherewithal to pull it off. But they aren't getting a penny of my money until I'm convinced that I will truly own the product I'm paying for.

+Phil Verhey A laser is not a physical object that can be printed. When you print onto a piece of paper, you are printing ink and having it left behind. When you print using a 3D printer, you are either printing a binder, the material itself, or otherwise fusing the shape together to produce a 3D shape. It doesn't plot data points. Data points aren't appearing on the object. What this does is cut (or engrave). At best you could claim it as a laser mill. Printers build up. Mills cut down.
@jeffreyblack6669 жыл бұрын
So now you try and bring up imprinting when we are discussing printing? If they call it a 3D printer, they are wrong. Being capable of doing 3D designs doesn't make something a 3D printer.

I'm laughing imagining you talking like a tough guy with your ridiculous voice. Yeah, an easy to use machine for the rest of us which requires programming knowledge if the cloud goes down. Real thought out, you imbecile. Keep making your chipmunk videos; I'll go ahead and block/ignore you like those poor souls in the favelas.

Actually yes it can run in 100 yrs...if it was actual software since you would then be able to use an emulator "you can run XP with CorelDraw" which is what most of the cheap Chinese laser cutters use. You can run an XP Win7 virtual machine on win10 right now. The issue with the cloud is just that! If whatever service they are paying for goes away or accounts shut down you would be hosed. If it's physical software for an OS then you can run it 10, 20, 50yrs in the future if you wanted to via an "emulator", how the hell do you think Mrs PacMan runs on Mame from the 80's
@Psychlist19729 жыл бұрын
I'm generally pro-cloud, except for cases that involve otherwise dedicated hardware. Example: I have a 3d printer that uses a cloud-based slicer and has closed, proprietary firmware. The French company apparently folded (without any notice) and so the printer is only partially functional now. Dedicated hardware that relies on an external service to function will simply not last decades like dedicated hardware with on-board intelligence does. Another example: there are hardware synthesizers which require the computer to program. Synthesizers that were made in the 70s are still in use today. Those 90s and 2000s synthesizers which required computers are no longer usable without having a dedicated Windows 98 or Pre-OSX system in your studio. Unlike computers, tools and instruments tend to have a longer usable life, even when they've been leapfrogged by newer technology. Externally hosted services are ephemeral as are companies. To get the top of line model, it's $4500.

+Pete Brown My point exactly. My 3D printer will work in 10+ years because the whole toolchain is open source. I can maintain it myself. If services are in the cloud, I don't have access to the code and I can't fix problems.
@fstemarie9 жыл бұрын
+Pete Brown Putting such simple things in the cloud is the stupidest thing ever. The minute I know it needs the cloud, it's worthless to me for exactly those reasons. Just give me open sourced software I can run on a laptop. That's it. It's like they use the cloud because "it's cool"

+Granite Yeah, I was expecting raised letter business cards and puffy ink t-shirts!
@175myles9 жыл бұрын
+Granite The name is purely click bait, because of the huge 3d printer hype, that is what people will be searching for rather than a Laser CNC cutting machine which is what this is.
@williamhayden77119 жыл бұрын
+Granite The primary principle is to cut out 2D shapes that are used to create 3D objects as they did with the motive. Also the laser can cut 3D patterns in materials. They didn't even talk about it during this video. Keep in mind, however, you are dealing with the thicknesses of the materials you are cutting so you aren't going to cut a sphere or cube out of a 1/8" sheet of ply. It's mainly for adding decorations, text, etc.
@williamhayden77119 жыл бұрын
Squash I get your point. It should be called a cutter, but it does print (burn images, lines, et) also, but regardless it's not a 3D printer.

+Eekhoornstaartlolly This is the name of the product. We didn't get into it in the video, but I thought it was pretty silly to call a laser cutter a 3D laser printer.

+Tested I think its because it can track depth in the cutting material that the makers are adding that 3D label on it. It is misleading but to a point i suppose.

+Eekhoornstaartlolly I personally don't like the term "3D printers" since they are so far off from what a print actually is. They are material disposers and object builders. Or something. But maybe these guys should go with Laser cutter + 3D engraver. I'd like to have one either way.
@Eekhoornstaartlolly9 жыл бұрын
Tested Ah, that explains. Because the quality of this channel makes it hard to believe foe me that this was a mistake. Silly name indeed, a cutter/engraver with such a name will only spread confusion I think. Maybe they'll change it. On the other hand a "laser 3d printer" did catch my eye, so maybe good marketing haha

Simon What about when *they* decide they no longer want to support your version of the product. It happens, just ask all those old Nest (revolv) users? Using the 'cloud' for stuff like this is a poor idea and takes power away from the user/owner. If a product requires the cloud then the product is defective.
@broAnansi9 жыл бұрын
Incredibly cool. I would jump all over that, if they open sourced the software or at least made it available to run locally. Lots of great startups don't make it for a variety of reasons. I would totally buy the pro model, but what if the company shuts down and the cloud service is no longer available?

If this did not have it's brain out on the Net somewhere, I'd be all over this. Yeah, I want a laser cutter so bad my teeth hurt from grinding them, but putting your faith in a "cloud" for the heart, lungs, and brain of your $2,000 investment is too risky. Tech businesses come and go so if they went belly-up, their cloud services would follow soon after. Sorry guys, I've been on the Net since it's beginning (really) and nothing, NOTHING on the Net is permanent or absolutely reliable. Therefore, I will give this a pass. If it were completely self-contained, then you would have scorch marks on your order form as I would have one ordered immediately.
@MeshJedi9 жыл бұрын
They made a new laser because all the existing ones where expensive and made it just as expensive if not more expensive... Heck you can get a 40W 12x8 laser engraver shipped from the US for less than 400. Smaller area but enough for most projects, and for the savings, I'd live with manually focusing the laser. It also works if you lose internet ;)
@docpayce19 жыл бұрын
Guys, thats no "3D laser printer", thats a plane Laser Cutter. No 3D, no printing. Pls correct your title, its misleading. Ah, and yes, the product title is misleading, too. Thumbs down on trying to catch in on customers in such a shameful way of marketing.

I agree with a lot of the commenters who think the cloud is a bad idea for something like this. Give me a local version of the cloud software (even if if is 5-10x slower than the cloud) and I'd be a potential customer (cash flow is the primary limitation right now). I don't want to be SoL by software running somewhere else if the company fails or my internet goes down.

Glowforge looks interesting. The problem is it requires that the laser printer access software on the Glowforge server every time you use it. If you can't reach the server, if they shut it off, if they go out of business then you have an expensive hunk of machine that no longer works. This is exactly what happened to the customers of Revolv when Nest bought them. They decided it was too much trouble to keep the Revolv servers operating. So beware any system that requires software-in-the-cloud to work. This is especially true of startups.
