Just watched your wonderful video about the class 08 shunter. I left school in 1970 age 15 and started work on British Rail as a Junior railman ( lad Porter). I was a railway enthusiast starting work on British Rail, I couldn't believe my luck. My job was to take off wagon labels off the wagons and also put labels on the wagons. On my forth day at work I walked into the shunters hut and I was talking to the two shunters and the driver of the 08. One of the shunters said to the driver "Martin loves railways as a hobby as well as a job" The driver then said to me, "would you like to take the loco for a drive Martin.? ". I couldn't believe what I was hearing, I said yes. Please. So myself and the driver got on the 08, he sat on one seat and I sat on the other. He showed me how to start the locomotive and then he let me take the controls and we went nearly a mile down the track and stopped next to a scrap yard were there was a black 5, no 5305 ( 45305 in BR days.) I believe the Black 5 is now on a private stream railway, but I don't know which one.?. After I had a good look round the locomotive the driver of the 08 and myself went back to the railway yard. What a day that was.! I shall never ever forget that day. And I had photos to prove it really happened. Thank you for a great channel and a great video. Same with me when dad was on town pilot at Grimsby , during school holidays got to drive in exchange for pumping fuel header tank full . Then spent 37 years fixing and driving them at IMM , hated working on 08/09's , nightmare to re block them

When I was a kid these things used to run alongside my school pulling a ridiculous amount of wagons. The only available model was the old Hornby (Triang) one but it looked nothing like the real thing which had the coupling rods outside the chassis, they just used the standard 060 steam chassis with a different body! Then Lima did the real thing with outside coupling rods like the actual ones I saw most days. To be honest, I always preferred the little Dockyard 040 shunter which I still have.

A great collection Jenny. I have one currently, a Bachmann DB Shenker 08 lightly weathered by Dirty Boy of Cardiff, It is a representation of the on seen on the Great Ceantral Railway and looks great. I have a couple of N Gauge ones too EWS and Intercity. The new pricing is eye watering don’t you think!!

AN UPDATE!!!! I have just recently fitted this model with Sound and a Stay-alive. I used a TTS Hornby 08 sound chip and a Rails Exclusive 15x11x9 sugarcube speaker. I also fitted a ‘Kungfoo” stayalive unit. These items were gotten from youchoose at Warley in 2017. (Yes,, i know!!! Somethings take a while) Fitting was made easy by removing the 8 pin gubbins from the front of the loco. The speaker was then mounted here. The Stay-Alive unit and chip were fitted inside the cab with ample space, and by Bachmann making the cab removable, access to the chip and wiring is a doddle. Hard wiring the model and pre-wiring the speaker and motor is the key here as trying to utilise the 8 pin arraignment would make this a nightmare install. The sounds are excellent and the stay alive gives 10 seconds of after-run so an excellent and reasonable cost project over all. Gronk it up! Great collection of these stalwart locos. The Swallow and LMR liveries are the most attractive to me, odd then I only have a plain green l/e without wasp stripes and a plain black e/e hinged door brace. I suspect the price of second hand ones will go up now :)

From a total geek. Had same problem. Plastic handrails broke when trying to attach. Use plastic bristles from floor sweeping brushes to replace.

Hi Jenny, Bachmann don’t produce RTC livery items anymore for modellers, well if your a club collector member they have a couple of items, other than that if it wasn’t for model zone and Kernow we wouldn’t see any at all, the RTC livery is real, the prices on eBay for these items is unreal, to be fair Hornby have a few coaches in their range, they do have a class 31 loco it the livery, it is in the railroad range, I’d like to see a super detail model like Kernow did a few years ago, it’s a shame that Bachmann don’t do a sound fitted class 08 in 00 gauge but they do in N gauge, come on Bachmann even Hornby do a sound fitted 00 gauge 08 shunter. Maybe Accurascale will bring out a class 08 which will please the model world like their class 55 Deltic did last year.

I have only have one Bachmann Class 08 in Freightliner livery but the ridiculously slow gearing and motor with huge flywheel the model won me over with it's running performance so suited to the model. It shows off the connecting rods well. Definitely would like another for my collection!

I fitted both my Backmann Gronks with TTS decoders, took some modifications, but it works well, will get a Hornby one next I think :-)

Hello Jenny, I have some green 0800 gGonks, but my best one is a blue model by Triang Hornby in Its box and the price was £3.25. I cannot remember in which year I bought it, but it was from Harlow Nursey and Toy Shop in Harlow Town centre. Martin. (Thailand)

Theyve been westrail grey and light blue, orange, a dark blue one, then various oranges and yellows through the Years as they passed to ARG and then Aurizon. Theres a rake of L classes parked up at Avon Yard all awaiting their final fates in various liveries.

08484 captain Nathaniel Daryl was at shildon in its port of felixstowe livery for a very short period before it was repainted at the museum in to Railway Support Services house colours, the loco then left shildon to work at various locations on spot hire before it came back to the north east to work at Hitachi merchant park. I have no idea where this 08 is now. I also have this model in its blue colours which i managed to get for £35 from facebook sales group, and as i helped to repaint the real loco in to RSS i just had to do myslf a model of it.
