C LaF I used to be a wikipedist, though I recently moved to a similar volunteer platform for medical students, but I’ll try to give you a small insight - the main work on the articles is done by volunteers, but I can think of many things that need payment: 1) you have to pay the webmasters, PR specialists, administration workers etc., who make it possible for us to edit 2) there are all the servers where Wikipedia is saved - each of the articles is saved in every historical copy, plus each article has a discussion page, there are tons of pages describing the tables, navigation boxes etc... 3) advertisement, legal issues, ... 4) even though we are volunteers, there is a possibility to participate on meetings of the community, which are payed by Wikipedia So, I do not feel sad for not recieving anything :)

@@RobotboyX2 As a teacher I'd agree with that. Wikipedia is great as a jumping off point - it can give you a skimming overview of a subject that you could then use as a foundation to pursue further (or not, if it's something you don't need to know in that much detail). That's the whole point of it, it's an encyclopedia, it was never meant to be truly in depth, just an overview, like every encyclopedia. So it's doing exactly what it set out to do, nothing wrong with that. Of course there are inaccuracies on it from time to time, but I've seen plenty of glaring errors in books too. I'd just caution against thinking that a Wikipedia article contains everything there is to know on a subject.

@Cronus19775 жыл бұрын
@@perserving1495 Encyclopedias get updated quite frequently. Furthermore, not all wikipedia pages are edited equally. I remember watching an older documentary in the early 2000s that described the Tyrannosaurus as a lone hunter, because that's what scientists' research found to be true for decades on end. New research currently debunks that and defines the extinct species as haven been species that lived in groups. My point is information is always changing. How we understand science, history and culture is always changing and wikipedia is one of the worlds most accessible databases on information. The information is cited the vast majority of the time and provides knowledge that people in previous centuries would have never been able to obtain. Just because it's written in a book doesn't make it true. Anyone can write a book, Alex Jones, a man who makes stuff up for a living has written a book. Wikipedia is not so much as a definite source as it is a compilation of human thought and discovery.
